I'll second Ubuntu - it seems to be the hot distro right now, plus you can run the live version from CD, no need to install, if you just want to screw around.

Another live cd I use is Slax - which is based on Slackware - uses KDE instead of Gnome as the default graphical interface, so you can get a feel for the difference.

Either way, you don't have to swap hard drives to try them out.

Since it appears you've decided to go with Ubuntu, I'd recommend heading over here > http://www.ubuntuforums.org/

They will have the answers to all your upcoming questions.

I've only worked with Redhat and Suse. They're both alright.

I use Fedora myself. It was a breeze to set up and when my family, including grandparents and younger cousins, come by, they have no trouble navigating the system when they want to check their email. From the positive response in here, I guess I will give Ubuntu a shot on my next install.

I'd also reccomend trying Kubuntu, which is based on Ubuntu but uses "KDE" as the main Graphical user interface rather than "Gnome". IT's all a matter of personal preference. http://www.kubuntu.org/

Gnome has more of an OS X feel while KDE has more of a windowsy feel. sort of. kinda.

I second Kubuntu, I just prefer the KDE interface to Gnome, but you can always install Kde from the repositories once you get Ubuntu Running.
