Anybody else interested in this? If so, do you know of anyplace that is taking pre-orders? I tried everywhere and it seems this might be around the day it comes out and then not seen again for a few months...

It won't even be around the day it's released. They are talking severe shortages this holiday season.
The Toys R Us by me had people waiting online overnight this weekend, because they were taking pre-orders for 8 consoles. I guess it gives me more time to convince the wife that $600 for a PS3 is reasonable.

Damn, I'm still not done with my Playstation 2 yet. Now I have to invest in a new platform? Stupid technology making me poor. I guess I have to say goodbye to Vice City, and the good 'ol PS2 Tony Hawks. Mourning starting in 3,2,1.

Too many awesome PS2 titles out this Christmas for me to bother with getting PS3 this year. I also want to wait and see how people receive the machine in light of the Xbox 360 glitches that were inherent with the initial release. Maybe the disgusting price will also go down by a hundred or two as well.

Also, PS3 games are more expensive than ps2 games; they'll be upwards of 60 dollars per game now.

Only thing I'm even considering is the Wii. I'll never pay 600 dollars for a gaming machine. Plus all the negative publicity they've had about rumors of problems with it make me concerned about how it will even perform.

Plus it's kinda ugly looking.

LongIslandRob

It is a lot of $$, but it does have some cool features, that numb the pain of spending $600. Blu Ray disc player, bluetooth controllers, wifi. plus Metal Gear 4 looks real good and GTA IV looks awesome also. I got my PS3 lined up already, so I'll be a happy guy this x-mas.

Just picked up Guitar Hero 2 and the playlist is really good...

I really haven't done much homework on the Wii. I kind of just assume it will be the number 3 console like all of Nintendo's consoles since Playstation. Worth taking a look into however.

Playstation 3 is just too much money for me right now to consider it. Sony gave Japan a huge 15% discount on the price of the machines. I figure it will be a matter of time before they lower the price for the American copies. The question is: do they drop it in a few months or a few years?

Wait until next year. That's what I'm doing.

For one, the price will probably have dropped by then, and two, all the bugs that you just know this system is shipping with will be worked out for their next build.

This Blu-Ray stuff is too new and not fully tested. I wouldn't be surprised to find out half of the systems sold on launch date have some major playability issues.

Eh, any PS3 "exclusive" games will probably show up on the XBox360 anyway, like GTA and Metal Gear. I'm passing on the PS3 and waiting 2 days for the Wii.

I would like to see Dead Rising go onto a different console other than Xbox. I have a personal hatred for Microsoft, so unless it comes very discounted, I will most likely never get the 360- though I've heard great things about some of the games that are coming out for it.

Time will tell I guess. Like I keep saying like a goddamned record loop.

For those who planning to get a PS3, are there any great launch titles that are getitng you to buy the PS3? And no, you can't say MGS4 or GTA4 because they aren't launch titles.

I'm probably going with thw Wii-60. It's what the cool kids are calling the Wii plus an xbox 360 which is about the same price as a PS3. I'm a little miffed that the wii won't be in HD, but the games seem like the will be really unique with that new fangled Power Glove they got goin'.

The fact that the PS3 doesn't show any games in it's commercials is a little scary. The fact that I can't even get a PS3 for a year for less than two grand on ebay pretty much makes up my mind for me.

Ii did hear that the PS3 would be running some form of linux though. I don't it is possible (at least without a mod chip), but if I could run any linux apps that I want on it, I would buy two or three of them ASAP.

It's a great deal. Also this way, I don't even need to do any research to see if a game is any good or not, I just order everything and send back what i don't like. At least one in three games will keep me occupied while I am waiting for the others to arrive in the mail.

Wii has a port on the top for the gamecube controller. Don't need to be wielding the controller if you don't want to.

It is totally backwards compatible with GC games. And the launch bait will be...

Zelda. Twilight Princess. Which promises to to be much better than Windwaker (basically a souped-up 64 game)

I'm going to stick with PC games and ps2 games for right now. Most of the good stuff you can get on PC anyway...like Elder Scrolls IV and the upcoming Bioshock. I'm waiting more to see if anything goes wrong with ps3 in terms of bugs and stuff than because it doesn't have any great games yet. No system gets very good games until about 8 months to a year after it launches. Though the Wii with Zelda is looking like things will be different this time around.

I wasn't too excited about the PS3 until I saw the demo in Japan a couple of weeks ago. My jaw dropped at the raw power of it. If Sony could have gotten off their asses and made a few more units like Nintendo did there would be no doubt in my mind about getting a PS3. As it is, if you miss launch date you're probably not going to get one until after Christmas.

I bet you everyone in line for a PS3 that goes away empty handed and pissed will be picking up a Wii two days later, myself included. Another brilliant marketing strategy by Nintendo and a missed opportunity by Sony.

I said this in the other ps3 thread, but I really am only interested in the online multiplayer aspect of the next gen systems. I've made a lot of friends online in the past 3 years playing over xbox live that now play on the 360 so I'm sitting here waiting for a check to come through (stupid commission only sales jobs) so I can get one.

Now that broadband gaming seems to be the norm, I'm interested to see how ps3 does. I know that games like socom were MASSIVE over the internet, but there was nothing stopping some hayseed from playing over dialup and hitting the weak point for massive damage.

Like EVERY system "generation" this one will play out by christmas 07 or 08 when a good year or two of games have come out and every dev team is 100% comfortable working with the systems. I didn't get an xbox until 03, and I've been playing it for 3 years now, so I'm really not too concerned about what's going to happen right out of the box, I just want to get back online with my friends (including my best friend who just took a job in California who I wouldn't spend any time with otherwise).

2 years from now if I'm buying a second "next gen" system because mine went under... so be it. I could care less as long as I'm spending time shooting 12 year olds in the head over a broadband connection.

I have an XBOX, so my plan is to pick up a PS2 for $100 and spend the next year working though all of the $20 games that I've not had the chance to play. Meanwhile Sony will work through all of the pre-launch issues I've read about and drop the price, then I'll jump on board. Can't wait for God of War.

They invented the whole idea to begin with. The 360 can't play nearly the percentage of XBox games as the PS3 can play PS2 games, and then you have the up to ten year old PS1 games on top of that. The Wii will be able to play Gamecube games but I guarantee that there will be problems there too. It's virtually impossible for a new machine to be 100% backwards compatible.
You know what bothers me? There are a ton of gamers (read: fanboys) who will seriously feel like they have won a personal battle if their system sells more copies than their buddy's system. Since when do people take interest in the financials of the companies that are getting rich off them instead of how much they enjoy what they have?

I've never been a fan of playstation. It always felt like they gave out the license to make games for the system to too many nickle and dime companies. There have always been a billion more ps games than xbox games, but I have always enjoyed xbox games more than ps2. At least in the type of games I like (FPS primarily) xbox has been superior, so I'm really looking forward to the 360... aka a paycheck.

I would love to see them try to sell the games for 100 a piece. That's a HUGE commitment for a game that could either 1. be good and not take off... thus becoming useless if you're into multiplayer 2. suck 3. be great and have a following of cock sucking 12 year olds (aka halo 2... great game... annoying gamers)

Right now on Craigslist people are asking 2,000-3,000 for PS3s, and ebay I've seen bids up to 10. I don't get people that are willing fork out that much money. I'm not poor, but there's no way I could afford to spend $2000 just for video game console. I'm going to wait until after the holiday season to buy one of these or a 360, I haven't decided yet. But the price will have a lot do with it, I'm not paying $600 for a gaming system that can't blow me while I'm playing.
I couldn't figure out why people even try to sell them for 2,000 until I went to college up in CT with all these rich fucks who would have shit imported to play it a week earlier. I've always wanted things NOW, but I can't spend 10X the price for something a few weeks earlier.

KingGeno
10-23-2008, 09:43 AM
The upscaling on the PS3 is good, but there are stand-alone DVD Upscaling/Upconveting players that are better.
The benefits of having a PS3 (games, downloadable content, sharing of movies and files from your computer/external drive, eventual downloadable movie feature through Netflix and others, consistent firmware upgrades and new features/tweaks) well outweigh purchasing a seperate unit, I feel. Plus, I am sure they will improve the features down the line (it has a ten year life-cycle, per Sony).
It's the best thing goin' today, although I am waiting for another price drop or a big time bundle.

Oblivion is great, but it gets incredibly frustrating at times and in some respects is almost too big of a game.
You actually have to learn some fighting technique and strategy...not just swing aimlessly.
But you have a lot of freedom to do whatever you want and be whatever you want to make your character.
The best way to play it is to do a lot of exploring and sidequests while getting the feel of the game, or join a Guild and just climb the ranks doing their jobs for a while.

I'm leaning toward MW2 for the online plus I've heard the SP is pretty entertaining and the graphics are cutting edge.
But I keep hearing that Uncharted 2 is the best SP campaign out there.
Dragon's Age supposedly has over 100+ hours of gameplay with all the side quests- I like that idea, but I am just now wrapping up Fallout 3- don't know if I can make that kind of commitment right now.
And I keep hearing great things about Assasins Creed 2.

Start with Uncharted 2 single player. It's the best single player campaign I can remember. It's also probably the perfect length. Not too long and leaves you wanting more. Modern Warfare 2's single player campaign is OK but not as good as COD4. The plot makes little sense and gets worse as it progresses, there's way too many "I'm getting ripped up by bullets and I have no idea where they are coming from" moments and it's very short. It has some cool epic moments but Uncharted 2 easily tops them. The Spec Ops missions are more worth your time.
I'd probably wait on Dragon's Age. It could eat up your entire vacation if it hooks you.

Uncharted 2 is the greatest single player campaign I've ever played. MW2's multiplayer so far is even better than the 1st one. There's almost twice as many game modes, 70 types or weapons and almost twice as many perks. There's so many more layers to the multiplayer. Along with the challenges you can earn title banners for your name, emblems and accolades.
It's pretty easy to get 100% completion with the achievements as well.

Red Dead Redemption might as well be a new GTA.
I think the DLC stuff coming out for GTA was in the original game, but had to be cut out. So it was probably already done.
It's like the new Final Fantasy coming out. They had to take out the equivalent to an entire new game out of the final product, so they'll keep that one title going with DLC for 2 years.

you are lucky, mine would just stop reading discs. My ps3 did it too. Ironically after I got a new one, i opened up the old one just to fuck with it and see where shit goes, and i found the problem. The cord that connects the disc drive to the CPU actually slipped out of where it hooks in, which is under the disc drive. I put it back and it actually worked for like 10 times putting a game in and then it shook itself loose again. Fuckin cheap fucks

the warranty is 1 year, and its firm, he is long passed it. His system is a few years old by now. read back to my post though.
being your warranty is fucked anyway, open the system. There are guides online how to do it without breaking shit. Take off the actual disc drive, chances are either under that or right around there you would see the problem

If he bought it with a gold or platinum card, the warranty is automatically extended by one year, depending on the card.
PS3 was released on 11/11/2006. If he bought it "about a year later" give or take a few months, he may still be in that warranty area.

no, its not. he probably got it around christmas the year after, meaning it would still be over 2 years. And no, on these type of things, most of the time the CC wont auto extend the warranties on certain electronics like this because they break alot. Thats why the store tries to sell you the extra year upfront. They have shitty warranties on purpose, cause sony knows they will break.

I said it depends on the credit card. And the only reason the stores sell you the warranty up front is because it's pure profit.

Sony has taken a pretty firm stance on the out of warranty repairs - it's almost always $150 to get them to send you a refurb once it's out of warranty, though I have heard of a few people going up the ladder and getting them to replace it for free out of warranty. Big YMMV.
I heard on another board recently that they are out of the BC 80GB systems for replacement. If you can't get them to help you you you may as well Craigslist it "as is" or crack it open and start fucking around with it. Godspeed.

It's a normal, laptop hard drive in there. It comes out super easy, too.
It's not in the normal windows file format, so I'm not sure how that would work (it's in FAT32), but you'd probably need an external HD enclosure.

For Warhawk, I had a lot of fun with it when it first came out, but I'm not sure how many people are still playing it now (it's multiplayer only.) After playing games like Modern Warfare and Uncharted the controls on Warhawk seem way too sluggish. YMMV.

mine does too. its because of something with mode switching. When it loads a game, it almost like seperately runs that part from the other parts, so it almost resets as the game starts to load. So far it doesnt ever seem to be a problem
My PS3 slim has been flashing to a grey snow screen (like in the old days when you tuned to a channel that didn't exist) for a few seconds before starting any game. It is when I click to start the disc itself from the PS3 home screen. Anyone seen this?
Have you guys adjusted your supported video modes? I don't have a slim model to try it on, but it could be changing resolutions when you launch a game

This drive should work in my old PS3 correct?

I just have to format it or whatever?
Yeah, that will work.

Question I see the linux mod all the time. What exactly are the advantages of changing to that OS?
It doesn't replace the existing PS3 OS. It just gives you the option to run a linux distro (but without access to the graphics chip). Some people just aren't happy without a terminal window

Questions. I went on PlayStation Home online, and when into the resistance section. They have a game you play where you shoot incoming enemy ships. I checked and the game resistance is not like that, Was wondering if their was a game that is sort of a war shooter. I looked into uncharted and it is almost exactly like Tomb raider. Looking for a good war game.
Also for $12 I just ordered Iron man, did not have the greatest reviews but I figured what the hell, looked sort of interesting.

Yeah I bought a new one. I still have the old one. I'm gonna' get a hard drive for it and see if I can get it to work. Apparently the hard drive fried and that was what was wrong with it. If it works I'll just give it to a friend or something or sell it. If not I can always use the new hard drive as an external back-up.

I think someone was stealing wifi from me. I was averaging 5.0 mbps when I tested my internet connection on my PS3. I secured my network and now it's running at about 11 mbps.

There's some sort of bug going on with PS3s. Sony is now saying DO NOT turn on your non-slim PS3s until it's fixed.
Slim PS3s are apparently safe.

Yeah, I tried to play Rock Band 2 last night after the bug hit and before they said not to turn on my PS3. Looks like I might have corrupted all 10 gigs of my Rock Band DLC. Good times.

That's what Sony is saying. The bug doesn't break the system or anything. It just won't let you play anything and MIGHT corrupt your data and saves and erase your trophies. I can redownload everything if worse comes to worse, but 10 gigs is a lot.

I was about to turn on AC2 when I read the info from Sony. I'll be staying away from the PS3 for a while.

According to Sony, yes. And if you lost data, you should be able to recover.

Download the demo.
It's basically a movie drama, but as a video game. It seems like it's going to be great.
Here's an interview with the creator of the game. Sounds amazing.
