He said he jumped out of a foxhole and discovered a group of germans nearby, Before he could dive back into his foxhole he got hit in the ankle with a bullett. He also smoked cigs with the german soldiers as they took a break between battles.

my granddad got pissed after finding out what happened in the Battle Of The Bulge. he said the leaders let their guard down. it was around Christmas time and the leaders didn't realize the danger and were celebrating the holidays as the soldiers went to the battlefield. Our guys got sent in and ripped to pieces in the beginning of that battle "not realizing how well prepared the germans were"and his brother was in one of the tanks that got hit.

for 25 years the people of Luxemborg would host the families of the dead veterans into their homes as they visited their loved ones at the cemetary to show gratitude. my grandmother took a liking to a coffee warmer at this families house and the woman insisted she have it. years later a family friend put the warmer on the burner not realizing it was just to keep the coffee warm and she was brokenhearted....

just some family stories, thanks for listening...

Longest Day is very good, a cast that big is rarely assembled, ditto with A Bridge too Far.

Great call on The Big Red One. Finally out as it was intended.

Guns of Navarone just friggin rules IMHO. Especially Peck... 'You're into it now... Up To Your Neck !!!' when he loses it on Niven.

For Pearl Harbor you have Tora Tora Tora which is very comprehensive. The Shit Sandwich that Affleck is in does suck shit, which is sad, because hidden amongst the shit, I really like the actual bombing scenes, and the Doolittle raid. Ack. See '30 Seconds over Tokyo' for that run.

I liked the parts of Memphis Belle that conveyed how utterly insane it was to get into a B-17 and do what they did.

Catch-22 may be the 'Apocolypse Now' for WW2, it Really shows the insanity of bombing to the point of caricature, with a stellar cast.

Midway was cool, but like Longest Day and Bridge, are sometime weighed down by the enormity of the cast.

=

But all of those pale in my opinion for what many critics will argue is not only the greatest war movie ever made, but the greatest movie ever, 'The Best Year of Our Lives' which has no combat scenes at all, but deals with the 'Coming Home' aspect of war way before movies like Coming Home or Born On... did.

I don't know what it is, it's just the greatest ensemble of three guys coming back from WW2 and trying to adjust to life again. Worth it alone for the performance of Harold Russell as amputee Homer Parrish, his performance earned him not one, but two oscars for the same role, never been done before or since. Not bad for a guy who never acted in a flick before.

IMDB Link

=

Best Movie about World War 3 has already been done, and way back in 1959 with:

On The Beach [link to IMDB]

It sounds like its a porn title, but nope, it's Abbott and Costello.

I read the book "Flags of Our Fathers" several years ago and loved it.
Check out the 1993 picture "Stalingrad". The Russsian Front was one of the most horrific scenes in WWII but it doesn't get portrayed in film nearly enough.

"The Empty Mirror" is a deeply affecting, psychological portrayal of Hitler told through his own (fictional) words.

No one has said "Kelly's Heroes" yet? C'mon, it's Clint Eastwood getting all Dirty Harry on some freakin' Nazis. Classic!

It was indeed powerful, and focuses on war during Christmas... trying to find something peaceful and common for one moment, in the middle of the fighting and bloodshed. The backdrop of the white snow and the killing is always a strong visual ( Like the contrast in Kirosawa's Ran )

All of that is achieved in A Midnight Clear without being corny. It's heartbreaking. It was directed by Keith Gordon ( he is best known from the movie, Christine).

Also:

Guns of Navarone

All Quiet on the Western Front ( WW1...)

The Dirty Dozen

The Great Escape

Tora, Tora, Tora

~ Quinn

I think I watched Saving Private Ryan like 25 times already. The battle scenes are awesome. I don't necessarily like the almost goofy take that speilberg interjects into his movies though. Like the opening scene where the soldier is hit in the helmet with a bullet, then he takes off the helmet and is shot in the head. Was that necessary?

The Dirty Dozen is an amazing movie, with an amazing caste. Donald Sutherlands goofy smile cracks me up all the time. I think it's great how they were able to mix an inventive war story with comedy.

Stalingrad was a really good movie, but super depressing. Downfall was great too. The guy who played hitler was amazing. I don't think anyone mentioned Life is Beautiful. I think that's a pretty good WWII movie.

"The Great Raid" is an excellent movie. It documents the greatest POW rescue mission in military history. (503 American soldiers rescued by Army Rangers in Manila towards the end of WWII).

It was released in 2005 by Miriamax and not marketed at all - hence it bombed in theaters.

The best WW II submarine flick and one of the best war movies ever was DAS BOOT. Story told from the German U-boat perspective. Wolfgang Peterson actually forced the actors to stay indoors for weeks to get the submariner look. Great great film. Got the DVD a while back with the sound redone and was worried my house might have suffered damage during the depth charge sequences.

I also liked BATTLE OF THE BULGE, despite some flaws. BATTLE OF BRITAIN was good for it's time for the air-battle sequences. SINK THE BISMARK for the historical aspect. THE DAMBUSTERS was good. OPERATION CROSSBOW.

There are so many.
