View Full Version : Looking for a traveling budday
I am in the early stages of planning a trip to Europe. I was thinking of going late Feb/early March 07 for about 2.5 weeks, maybe even 3 if I can get the time off work. Right now the plan is, fly to London, spend a day or so there, then rail down to catch the ferry to Holland/Amsterdam, my favorite city in the world so far. From there, I would also like to visit switzerland, germany, spain, rome, and who knows where else, the idea of going over there and wandering aimlessly through Europe seems like a fun plan to me, and I hate being on a schedule, or having to follow an itinerary.

I also am huge into photography, and I plan on taking a ton of pictures wherever I go, so if you're into photography too, that will be a huge plus. It wouldn't want to slow anybody down while i'm busy catching shots, been there, done that, sucks.

I'm not much of a drinker, and don't plan on getting shitfaced drunk at any point during the trip, but I'll definitely throw a couple back at a cool pub. I AM a full time smoker though, and while in Amsterdam I definitely plan on hitting several coffee shops, and sampling some of the worlds finest.

Right now I am pretty content on going alone, but If there are any cool and like minded people reading this who are planning a similar trip, or would like to take a trip, then hit me up and lets talk. It would be cool to meet a new friend or friends to travel with.

My dates aren't set in stone yet, but I'm definitely going before summer. The prices are much less expensive during winter.

I went backpacking through europe like 4 years ago, for like 5 weeks. I went by myself because I didn't know anyone who could take that much time off. It was pretty awesome, but sometimes it sucks not having a buddy along with you. Eating alone can be sad.

However, you meet SO many people along the way. At train stations, hostels, whatever. I think I was travelling alone for maybe 2 weeks out of 5. The rest of the time I was travelling with some random stranger(s).

Three weeks isn't long enough to go unplanned. You rull up into a town and spend the whole day trying to find a decent hotel or hostel near what you want to see, find your cheap eats, get the lay of the place, deal with the places that don't speak english and all that, next thing you know you're done and you feel like you rushed the whole time. For a three week, multi-country Europe trip the more homework you do beforehand the better. Just a tip.

Can't join you though. I like to go to places where you can't feel yourself shit on your feet because they've already lost their circulation. Like France. Besides, RF.net is my vacation!

It would be cool to go with somebody though.

I was a little worried about feeling rushed. I am figuring in travel time into the trip though. Still have a lot of homework to do though.

You can even trim that down to 2 or 3 for the smaller cities. We did London, Paris, Bordeaux, Madrid, Barcelona, Nice, a town in Northern Italy, Rome, Interlaken, then Brussels (unfortunately b/c my friend got his europass stolen). I thought it was stupid to have it so tightly planned, but it turned out we got a lot more done. The biggest thing for us was to getting the europass stuff straightened all out. I think its better to get most of your train reservations straightened out at the beginning of your trip, it makes things easier than dealing with train stations is each country you go to. Other than that I had no problem with hostel reservations booking 2 days beforehand. Good luck.
That is exactly what first came to mind. I like my fingers where they are, my achilles intact, and my women not cracked-out.

My friend and i met a lot of English people in Prague. One told us it was about 25 quid to get fly there. so i guess that explained it We met Texans too, which was a little weird but mostly English people who were there for stag parties.

As far as planning went, we knew what we wanted to see and had ideas on seeing more but burned ourselves out towards the end of the week. Probably had to do with the fact that we were consuming bottles upon bottles of wine and trodge coupling with the amount of walking we were doing each day/night.

I wish i had had an extra week there but i feel like i experienced a good amount in the time i had.

I did 42 days with a very rought outline. This was after my sophomore year (summer 2000) right before the euro and the dollar was strong so everything was really cheap. There were three of us, so we did hotel rooms instead of hostels. It was a great time. Here was my route..

Flew into Amsterdam and stayed 3 or 4 days there.

Took a train to Hamburg for a couple of days...pretty cool place but wouldn't recomend it for a 2 and a half week trip - to far out of the way.a few days in Munich....loved it there and definitely recomend it.

Intelockken - great place, unbelievable landscape and hiking.

Zurich - beautiful city, but again wouldn't recomend it on a short trip..

Venice - it was ok, didn't love it.

Rome - Loved it, but it is time consuming, you need at least 4 full days to see everyting.

Florence - great city and you can see everything in a day and a half.

Nice/Monte Carlo/Cannes - did about a week split betweent the three. Beautiful women. Pretty pricey though.

Barcelona - Only planned 4 days there and 4 or5 in Madrid. Wound up spending 10 days there and blowing off Madrid because the day we were supposed to leave we were able to score Radiohead tixx in Barcelona for a show 3 days away. We were at the station and we almost got on the train anyway but at the last minute we decided to stay and blow off MAdrid. Wound up being a great decision, it was the best show I have ever seen to this day and we had a blast in Barc.

Paris - About 5 days there. I enjoyed it, I didn't love it but it was cool. A lot to see and at theat point I was so museumed out that I didn't even go to the Luve when my brother and freind went. I drank all day long at an out door cafe by myself for acout 6 hours on a wednsday and watched Paris go past me. For some reason that day sticks with me more than any other from the whole trip. I can honestly say not going to see the Mona Lisa turned out to be agreat decision for me. I can gaurantee they don't remember a thing aboyut the hours of lines they waited on to see that painting, yet 6 years later I still remember what the women walking by me looked like.

Back to Amsterdam for a few days to complete the circle - Holland was hosting the Euro Cup and I got to watch a few while in Amsterdam. The Dutch were 3 - 0 in the qualifying round, the city was completely nuts.

Well, those are my notes....SEE YA!
