I saw earlier today that Snipes was being accused of dodging something like 12 mil in taxes, and now CNN is reporting that a warrant has been issued for his arrest. Is guilty, or is this a case of the man keeping him down? The story says he went 6 years without paying taxes, I skipped my taxes one year when I was in college, and the next year I heard about it, and in the end they owed me money, so I would say this is just a case of delayed justice.

Hollywood star Wesley Snipes was charged Tuesday with failing to pay taxes and conspiracy in an indictment that could put the versatile actor and producer behind bars for more than 40 years.

Now it's 40 years...damn the man.

Not for nothing, but does HE really take care of his own taxes? I would have figured he had people doing that.

The prosecutors sound like Don King:
"For nearly a decade, Snipes has engaged in a campaign of criminal tax conduct combining brazen defiance with insidious concealment," the prosecutors say.

For a while wasn't Snipes using the argument that he didn't pay because income taxes are illegal? That's hasn't worked yet with the IRS or the courts.

MIAMI | Fri Nov 19, 2010 4:40pm EST

(Reuters) - Actor Wesley Snipes was ordered on Friday to start serving a three-year prison sentence for failing to file income tax returns by a federal judge who rejected the Hollywood star's bid for a new trial. (http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6AI42J20101119)

The argument I've heard there is that since the law says the income tax is "voluntary", that means that you don't have to pay it.

Uh, no. It means that the IRS lets you bring the money to them instead of them coming to get it.

It's the people who argue that income taxes are unconstitutional, due to they're not being apportioned, that amuse me. If you tell them the 16th Amendment to the Constitution makes it (by definition) constitutional and specifically states it's without apportionment, they look at you like you're the one who just doesn't understand.

16th Amendment: The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.

It seems pointless to jail him or anyone over this! Just fine him and make him pay what he owes over time!

Deterrent. I used to be a law breaker. A little bit of jail cured me of that.

exactly, and showing the willingness to lock up someone high profile like this will get a lot of smaller fish to pay as well.

Why would that be a deterrent over forcing him to pay the millions that he owes plus extra? It's just a waste of time and money on an already overtaxed prison system! Quit wasting our resources on white collar criminals!

You're a silly person for even pretending that's more of a deterrent.

Yeah, right! You're a silly rube if you think prison is any kind of serious deterrent for anything in this country!

This nonsense about the un-Constitutionality of paying income tax has been kicking around as long as I can remember. In the '70's, a lot of night-time AM radio would be taken over by nuts who espoused this, and they were also frequent callers on talk shows back then. Some of their arguments focus on the idea that the money issued now is not "real" money. and therefore not taxable.

In the old days, the IRS used to ignore some of the more vocal nuts and then just go in and confiscate everything in their estate after they died.

It's hard to believe Snipes was so stupid to get involved with all this, but then again, he's just a guy who recites lines somebody wrote down on paper. Whether he can actually analyze an argument or engage in logical thinking--or just look around and use common sense to figure out what society will accept and what it won't--we just don't know. From this example, it looks like he can't.
