Anyone into this? It's like modern day treasure hunting using a gps. I started yesterday and had my first find. It brought back memories of smoking pot in the woods. I felt like I was doing something illegal but it's all in good sober fun!

Check it out! www.geocaching.com

What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for gps users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful features and capability of a gps unit. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache.

Wanted to try this, there were a lot of caches near me because of all the parks and trails, but never did.

I remember there was a story not too long ago where the police thought they found a bomb. Turned out it was just a cache in an ammo box.

There's a similar thing called letterboxing
www.letterboxing.org
I've found a few in NYC... urban letterboxing's kind of fun... you have to be
all stealthy because otherwise you look totally suspicious ducking ot grab
things from the undersides of mailboxes and whatnot...

Yeah this made the paper here a little while back. Someone was arrested geocaching when they dug up the chest or lunchbox or whatever it was to leave something behind. Well it was a little close to the side of a bridge and I guess some old bitch driving by thought terrorist were invading PA and called the police. I believe all the charges were dropped.

Done this a couple of times with the family. The kid thinks it's the coolest thing to go out and find the "treasure"

I'm into it. I only have 4 or 5 finds. The wife and I use the game as an excuse to go for walks in the woods we normally wouldn't take.
Went and found my first one today. It was so cool. I felt like I was ten years old again playing in the woods. I can see myself being totaly addicted to this.

yep been doing it for about 2 years now. great excuse to get outside and get some fresh air.
I have been into geocaching for about 2 years. It is a good way to get the kids out of the house and interested in nature and hiking.
Because of the recent January thaw I decided to get out there again and found my 50th and 51st caches, but I also failed to find 2 caches. Got plenty of fresh air though.

Sounds like fun. People still do this, apparently.
Here is a google website that shows the various geocaches that are in midtown Manhattan. (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/gmnearest.aspx?lat=40.776&lng=-73.97172)
You can put in your address to see the geocaches that are available in your area. You might be surprised to find out how many things are hidden in places you go every day.

I've been doing it for about a year and a half now. Since I'm in the sticks there aren't as many as there are in more populated areas. I think I've found 25 or so. And we've had a covering of snow since early December so I haven't been out in weeks. Last winter was great because we didn't really have snow until February. I really like hiking in the cold.
