For the last 4 months I have been working as a teacher for the developmentally challenged.  My  group is severely retarded and many are also autistic.  The majority are non-verbal and some are violent.I love my group very much as if they were my own children (even though they are adults).One of the bastards gouged my eye about two weeks ago.  A 200 pound retarded black woman gave my left eye the ol' fishhook with her unclipped, ass picking, fingernails.  At first there was no infection and i thought I dodged a bullet.  Now an infection has spread to both eyes, and my sight is severly compromised in my left eye.  It'll get better, but for the time being I am a fucking cyclops.luckily my boss has been good with giving me a few days off to recover.  But only a few.  most of the other teachers and assitants are afraid of my group.  I usually end the day with blood on my shirt (my blood).I really do love my job, if that can be believed.

My sister is getting a Masters in Special Education, she's very happy with the path her life is taking her.I give her a hard time that everything she does is pointless because retards can't learn.   I'm a good brother.

The pay is awful, but the job is pretty easy cause we just teach basic living skills.  My job is even easier because my group is so low functioning that there's very little we can teach them.  I work on being able to communicate needs through sign language, and general hygiene.  i also teach them not to poke people in the eye.

Were you able to explain that each of them could feast on their own excrement?The big black guy.Actually, their story is very sad.  For a long time they were kept at Willowbrook <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willowbrook_State_School">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willowbrook_State_School</a>  Willowbrook is the place that Geraldo Rivera investigated and found all those horrible atrocities.  There was also an experiment there where they would infect the kids with Hep B.  Many of my group were at Letchworth, which wasnt much better.

I wish you a speedy recovery. I work with the same population (training parents in behavior modification) and have had to deal with some aggression in the past. I am not doing direct care anymore because the pay sucked for the risk and stress. I am going for my PhD in the field so hopefully I can get some significant research accomplished  and help some people. Again Good Luck.

When I was a nurse, I dealt with many retarded people....on the whole, they are pretty nice people..now that I think about it.....when I was a cop....I dealt with alot of retarded people too...except then....we called them prisoners!!!!!!

Really, I hope you get better quick.Care-giving jobs are really tough jobs and I'm glad there's people in the world that can do it.  I don't think I personally would have the patience.
