My computer has been acting really slow lately and a friend of mine told me to check my registry. I downloaded a trial version of Stompsoft registry repair and it seems to have done the trick....my 'puter is behaving like I just bought it...

Now, the trial version has lapsed....are there better registry repair software out there? I don't mind paying for the software(not alot)...free would be great....but does anyone know of the best registry software since I'll probably have to pay for it!!!!!!!!!!!

Registry Mechanic works good for me. I think it's 30 bucks. My sub ran out after a year, but it still works. Just no updates.

When I was having a problem with my registry, the best solution I could find was opening up the registry editor, highlighting all the keys, and deleting them. It should take care of all your problems.

Have you checked for spyware? If there is stuff gunking up the registry and you aren't installing and uninstalling software constantly, there really should be no need for regular registry interaction. It is exactly what its name implies. It is really just a blueprint for the operating system. The items in the registry that are getting loaded into memory when you boot are what are causing your problems. Yes, if there are too many entries in the registry, it can hamper performance.

If you aren't doing so already, download and use Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware. These will scan for and remove (including from the registry) malicious, harmful or unnecessary items from the computer.

Also, what antivirus are you using. Norton and McAfee affect system performance and are getting increasingly worse at actually removing viruses from systems.

I have Spybot and AdWare.....My anti-virus is Norton...now what???

With those and the registry cleaner you should be fine. Another good tool is C Cleaner, but you have to be careful with it. It gives you so many opions on things to remove from your comp, that you could end up constantly having to figure out stuff like passwords and such.

Stick with what you have, (Ad Aware, spybot, norton, and the registry cleaner) for now. You should be fine.

reeshy wrote:
I have Spybot and AdWare.....My anti-virus is Norton...now what???

Norton is a resource hog and unfortunately is itself a target of many viruses (virus - virii - whatever). If you don't have too long left on your subscription, ditch it for AVG, which is free.

You can download it from http://free.grisoft.com .

BTW, you can schedule Spybot to run it's scans automatically just like the antivirus, though you do have to periodically manually update it from within the program. The other thing to do is to switch Spybot to advanced mode, then go to TOOLS and then to HOSTS FILE. Click the button at top to Add Spybots hosts list. This blocks many known spyware by preventing your computer from reaching known bad domains. Even if your computer got infected, the spyware or virus would be unable to complete its designed task.

One thing to remember...

An often overlooked thing is program updates. I don't get too many updates to Spybot, but tonight... WHAM!!! There were at least 10 of them.
