Should have been put in the Hall of Fame last year. I obviously never saw him play but he was always a very good interview to listen to.

ESPN

He didn't get into the HOF by ONE fuckin' vote?!?

That's a travesty. RIP, Buck. He was one of the greatest of the greats when it came to being a representative of the game.

There was always something so genuinely heartwarming about Buck. I had assumed he was in the Hall already, and I agree it's a travesty that he didn't live to see himself enshrined. He'll go in posthumously I'm sure, but I wish Major League Baseball could get its act together and put some of these old timers in before they pass away.

PS - Hey Mojo...interesting comparison between Ron Santo and Brooks Robinson in this month's Baseball Digest. Did you happen to see it?

Yeah, it was posted on one of the Cubs boards I frequent. Robinson was a damn good player, but I think he got in for making that astounding WS catch more than anything else...and him getting in with no Santo in sight is a joke. Santo wasn't quite the defensive 3rd baseman Robsinson was, but he was close. Ultimately, it's tricky to compare them since Robinson ended up playing 8 more seasons. Both should be in, no question.

BROOKS ROBINSON: 23 Seasons
268 HR
.267 BA
2848 hits
482 2B

RON SANTO: 15 Seasons
342 HR
.277 BA
2254 hits
365 doubles

"God's been good to me, You can see that, can't you? It didn't happen. They didn't think Buck was good enough to be in the Hall of Fame. That's the way they thought about it and that's the way it is, so we're going to live with that. Now, if I'm a hall-of-famer for you, that's all right with me. Just keep loving old Buck. Don't shed any tears 'cause I'm not going to the Hall of Fame"

That being his quote, mine would be "Fucking idiots." I'll hold out hope for Buck, Bert Blyleven, and Tommy John, but this is a crying shame.

Actually, the Baseball Digest comparison was their average season for the decade of the 1960s -

Hits - Brooks 169 Ron 159

HR - Brooks 19 Ron 25

RBI - Brooks 84 Ron 94

Avg - Brooks .278 Ron .281

Runs - Brooks 79 Ron 82

Extremely close stats, but Santo gets a slight edge as the best offensive Third baseman of the sixties. Where they seperate is the fielding -

Putouts - Brooks 159 Ron 145

Assists - Brooks 339 Ron 339

Errors - Brooks 13 Ron 23

Fielding avg. - Brooks .975 Ron .954

Gold Gloves Brooks 10 Ron 5

Beats me. I've heard that a lot of the vets still hold it against Santo that he'd celebrate a lot of the Cubs' wins in '69 with those really high "clicking heel" jumps. Apparently that kind of showboating was a big no-no then and they're still kinda dicks about it. And here's the thing about him winning "only" 5 consecutive Gold Gloves...

During his 14-season run with the Cubs, Santo hit 337 home runs; he was the first third baseman to hit over 300 home runs and win five Gold Gloves, a feat since matched by only Mike Schmidt, a Hall of Fame player with a lifetime batting average 10 points below Santo's .277, in an era noted for weaker pitching.

But if that's the case, the issue of the heel-clicking, can't they be appeased that the man lost both his goddamn legs to diabetes? Buncha savages...

Back on topic, the Dugout had a wonderful little tribute to Buck.
