Does anyone remember an old cartoon that was featured on the nickelodeon show "Pinwheel" (I think), or it could have been on Sesame Street. There was this little animal with huge ears and he lived on top of a building in the city, and he would wrap himself up in his ears and slide down a drain pipe on the roof. He would also look through a telescope at stuff. I remember it looking like it was drawn in the 70s but I watched it in the early 80s.

I watched Nick a lot during that period. I was fucking obsessed with Pinwheel. I liked it way better than Sesame Street after awhile - I guess it was marketed at a slightly older demographic. I just remember those puppets that would play tag and just keep tagging each other back and forth...."Tag you're it!"

Pinwheel was actually a Canadian show, I think. For some reason, a lot of the kids shows that Nickelodeon showed back then were Canadian - including Today's Special, Fred Penner's Place, and of course, You Can't Do That on Television (with the immortal Les Lye) - and they were all fantastic.

Even when I was young and shouldn't have known any better, I always got a real kid toucherous vibe from Mr. Wizard. I also always got the impression when the kids screwed up he was going to punish them with more molesting. It sounds like one of those press reports of child molesters:

"Police today announced the arrest of an elderly Pittsburgh man in conjunction with several brutal child rapes that occurred in the area.

Police say that 57-year-old Don Herbert lured young prepubescent children of both sexes to his home with talk of having them perform "science experiments." He also had the children refer to him by the moniker "Mr. Wizard." From the information police have culled from initial interviews with the children, these so-called experiments included frequent fellatio, viewing of animal porn, and placing a hotdog in the microwave and cooking it until it exploded."

I don't know. There was just something really creepy about an old guy who loved hanging around with kids one-on-one and teaching them science. And tell me that heating up the hotdog thing until it expanded to an unbelievable length and exploded wasn't a metaphor for his coming.

If it does make it into my Mod Quote, please fix the "you" with "yo" which is what I meant to put, so it made it sound like I was speaking like a 1700's sharecropper.
My brother and I used to watch it all the time. Early 80's, cable tv was new to Tulsa, and we were the first on the block to get it. Cool show.
