I think this says a lot about how Americans are "dumbing down". I mean why should we care about Tom Cruise's baby, what Paris Hilton is doing or that Katie Couric is reading the nightly news when there are a hundred other things more important in the world today? Not to mention all these idiotic "reality" TV shows. Yet, people do. Maybe it's a form of escapism.

i'm not getting why is this such a big deal, it's a magazine with days old news and opinions

besides, annie leibovitz is a fairly major artist over the last three decades, and a profile of her may not translate on an international level

is this the first week ever that the've used a different cover domestically ...?

when newsweek has non-news covers (entertainment/health/religious), do they make all editions ...?

I think it's less the government trying to "control people" (unless somehow Newsweek's editorial board has all been replaced with government officials) than trying to sell magazines. I think people here would consider such a story a "downer" and would be less likely to buy Newsweek. People get so paranoid so easily.

This message was edited by narc on 9-29-06 @ 2:20 PM

I think it's both. Part of it is that people don't want to handle it anymore since there is so much negativity out there, but it is also that people are not able to. I don't know what's happening with our country but it seems like people are losing intelligence at a rapid rate. When I'm trying to hire someone for my business, you would be amazed at the "quality" of some of the resumes. Ant's (from O&A) story about the morons at the hospital seems to be the be the rule these days, not the exception. The media see that, and they cater to it. In the process, they make the situation even worse. Politicians see it as well. Ronnie nailed it earlier this week when he was talking about people actually thinking our president is a rancher: "When you're dealing with people that are as dumb as shit, you have to pretend like you're dumb as shit too, and they will love you for it."

Plus, you're missing the point. The purpose is to sell magazines. Something with Annie Leibovitz on the cover will sell more magazines than a depressing story about losing in Afghanistan.

It's not censorship, it's "creative editing".

The country is still infected with the baby boomers. That's where the Yuppies came from, and that's who mainstream advertizing panders to. Conspiracy is much more interesting.
