I know this is a very vague question and there are a lot of places, but I'm going to MSG tomorrow for the Eric Clapton show with my father and he wants to go to Hulihans (sp?) for some ungodly reason. I'm not that familiar with the NY scene so maybe some good suggestions for somewhere very close to there will save me. I prefer local places then chains and I try to stay away from ethnic foods (we'll be in a group). Any alternatives will be greatly appreciated.

Your friend,

Derrick

What about heartland Brewery. www.heartlandbrewery.com

It's not really a chain, but they have more than one location in NY. They have 2 places reasonably close to MSG, and good for groups. It's generic bar food, but the beer and atmosphere is alot better.

If you are willing to go more south, some other places to check out:

RUB BBQ http://www.rubbbq.net/

Patsy Pizza. It's a pretty famous place. And it's sitdown, not grab a slice and go. http://www.patsyspizzeriany.com/locations.htm The closest one is on 23rd I think.

Try anything Batali. I'm a big fan of Casa Mono on Irving St near Union Square and Otto near Washington Square. Excellent food and not too expensive.

Tir Na Nog, across the 8th avenue is a bit pricey, but has a real nice burger, along with some other great pub style food. Get there early for a table, because there will be a lot of concert-goers there.

Sheepy knows. Grays papaya is fantastic. That shit rules, its on 38th just up 8th ave. Dont expect a table. After your papaya dogs, you might want a drink...walk a few more steps uptown on the same side of the avenue to the Wakamba Lounge. Nice people in there.

there's a cool irish pub on 8th ave and maybe 32nd, called molly wee's. not too pricey and great food. just give yourself a little extra time if you're going to eat, because seating is somewhat limited.

There's a good steakhouse Angelo and Maxies on the northwest corner of MSG, by 34th and 8th.

If you want to eat on a rooftop deck and have a nice view with the meal, go to Local, on 34th just below 8th across the street from MSG.

BENS DELI is not far from there, its on 38th street.

I recommend the Pastrami on rye...extra lean. A few more dollars but worth it.

If you're looking for a good pint and a fantastic, fairly priced burger, try the White Horse Tavern or the Corner Bistro in the West Village. Go to 14th St. and 8th Ave. and goes south. You won't be disappointed.

wee molly's or tira's is your best bet ... the heartland brewery is a tad gimmicky and unnecessary -- too chainish
