[color=navy]I saw this new show on CBS tonight and it was pretty good. The premise is that it takes place in a small town in Kansas when presumably a nuclear attack hits major cities. though only Denver and Atlanta are confirmed after the first episode. But a couple of weird things happening: animals suddenly dropping dead, they are not picking up any higher radiation readings yet and some girl's esophagus suddenly closes up right after the blast. And they also find an empty prison bus filled with dead guards. So they are setting up some stuff.

The first episode played like the Twilight Zone episode "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street" except this ended happily. Gerald McRaney (George Hearst in Deadwood) plays the mayor, and its jarring if you've seen Dead wood because he plays a strong but caring character in almost exaeclty the same way he played Hearst. I was almost expecting him when makling a speech at the end of the episode to say "I will not feign to convince you why obeying me will benefit you, I will onyl say that you will do as I say because I WILL IT SO!"

Skeet Ulrich plays the main chaacter and there's some mystery behind him right now. The show as of now certainly seems to owe a lot to "Lost" unless they are going in a different direction than it seems they will. I still enjoyed it, and knowing that JJ Abrams isn't involved in the show means that there is a chance that there will be closure to some of these mysteries and perhaps they won't be making up shit on the fly.

so basicly, it's "the day after", but streched out into a series?

Not feeling it all that much. I didn't really pick up on the "strange stuff" -- birds dead from radiation (i would assume they flew away from the blast but were affected already), prison bus was just the aftermath of an accident (bus driver sees blast, crashes, prisoners get out -- one thing left hanging there is that the fella who said he was a St. Louis cop might very well be an escapee). Ehh. Flat for me. I hope it picks up -- I was really looking forward to the show.

I totally had the same reaction to seeing Gerald McRaney -- strangle that motherfucking Hearst! He sure is getting lots of work these days. I guess Delta Burke finally let him out of the dungeon.... Out of ice cream, perhaps?

It was pretty good for a network show. It looks like there's gonna be some conflict wit that bald-tie wearing dude and the mayor.
Good call if you are right.

Overall, it was okay, but considering I love these types of shows/movies I will be sticking around until CBS eventually cancels it before season's end.

Alright, who the hell is Hawkins really? He obviously had some prior knowledge of these attacks as he got out of Denver before it hit. I really hope he isn't some bad guy terrorist that is behind this. I like his character (minus the secrecy bullshit).

I like this show, but it needs more apocolayptic stuff (like when they found the plane crash and empty planes, short snips of video after the bomb, the radiation sickness), and less WB-esque drama.

Has anyone noticed how absolutely ridiculous the music is on this show? On the last episode where they were filling that water tanker up with gas and were worried it would explode, they played this horrific hard rock guitar riff music... awful

I am DYING to know what Hawkins deal is. I'm guessing some kind of CIA/FBI. What exactly did the dying guy say to him? Hawkins said something like "why did you go back, it was only for families" and I couldn't really catch the gist of what they were discussing.

The mayor definitely has some kind of wierd illness going on too... not just the flu

I agree. It started off decent. I'm on episode 18 and it has degenerated into something that resembles what you would get if you put the writers from the Dukes of Hazzard and Days of our Lives in a room and told them to churn out scripts as quickly as possible while they watched Lost.

I think it suffered from the same thing a lot of these types of shows do: you have a premise that would give you like 20 awesome episodes, but the demands of American network television demand that you write it like it's going to go on for at least 100 episodes.
Imagine this: take the story of Lost and boil it down, British TV or American cable TV style, to 4 or 5 13 episode seasons. it would have kicked all kinds of ass.

I agree with that but there is something more wrong with this show. It really feels like they were fucking around with the writing as the show progresses. Not much consistency in style and content.
