I've found a way of discovering new music is recommending little-known songs by big name artists.

For example, I'm a big Bon Jovi and Bruce fan, but some of my favorite songs in their catalogs are not the typical "Wanted Dead or Alive" or "Badlands".

For Bon Jovi, some of my favorites include:

1) Captain Crash and the Beauty Queen from Mars

2) Radio Saved My Life Tonight

3) Story of my Life

4) Raise Your Hands (I'm not sure if it was a single or not - I know it gets some B-side play, but it's still not in the upper echelon of well-known Bon Jovi songs)

For Bruce Springsteen:

1) Back in Your Arms Again

2) My Love Will Not Let You Down

3) The Wish

4) Rendezvous

5) Blood Brothers (especially the live version done 7-1-00...)

6) E-Street Shuffle (again, live version done 7-1-00... if you want the bootleg, let me know)

7) Shine Silently (A Nils Lofgren song, but it kind of falls in here)

Warren Zevon:

1) Mutineer (The sadness and the passion that permeated this song when he played it on his last appearance on Letterman haunts me to this day. When he looks into the camera, smiles, and says "Let's get out of here..." it kills me)

2) I Was In The House When The House Burned Down

3) Poor Poor Pitiful Me (Yes, probably his best known song outside of Werewolves and Lawyers, but still, not a lot of people know about Warren)

I'd like to see what other people could recommend from their favorite artists, to try and grow other peoples interest in music.

I first heard it on "Genius", which is his greatest hits compilation. I got into Warren after listening to "The Wind", which is a fucking phenomenal album and one of my top-15 all time, but it's hard to get into if you know what the album is about and how completely gut-wrenching it is.

"Keep Me In Your Heart For A While" is one of the most beautiful - and saddest - songs I've ever heard.

I'm not a huge limp bizkit fan, but there was one track on significant other featuring Scott Weiland & Jjonathan Davis called "nobody like you" that is really really really good. I never heard it on the radio or anywhere really. But you should check it out.

Velvet Underground - Who Loves The Sun

U2 - Dancin' Barefoot - sure it's a cover, but really outstanding

Led Zeppelin III - the whole album - overlooked I think, gorgeous weird open-tuning folk devil music

Talking Heads '77 - their debut album, brilliant, innocent and optimistic and peculiar

Muddy Waters "Hard Again" - If you even have the hint of an inkling that you like Muddy Waters, get this album

Sheryl Crow - On The Outside - I have no idea where it's from, but it's just beautiful

Billy Bragg & Wilco - Way Over Yonder In The Minor Key (From "Mermaid Avenue") - Natalie Merchant's backing vocals are haunting

Cardigans - Iron Man - black sabbath on jazzy downs. funny, cheesy and ultimately some nifty guitar work

Raise Your Hands is a great song. I can still rock out to it. She's a Little Runaway was pretty popular but it's another good one from another era.

Radiohead has a song called "Nude (or Big Ideas) that has been played lived but hasn't shown up on an album yet. Kinda reminds me of "A Whiter Shade of Pale". The live version of "Like Spinning Plates" is fucking amazing...check it out if you ever get the chance.

I could go on and on with absolutely incredible Rolling Stones songs that commercial radio ignores, choosing instead to ram "Jumpin' Jack Flash" or "Satisfaction" down your throat for the thousandth time. If I had to choose just one little known song I'd tell everyone to check out "Stray Cat Blues", the most bad-ass song ever recorded.
"Polyethylene-Pt II" by Radiohead - not a very long song, but it goes to show you that for a band that has experimented as much as they have with their sound in their career, they can still rock hard when they want to.

"True Love Waits" by Radiohead. Completely acoustic. Simply gorgeous.

They Might Be Giants - "John Henry" the entire album. Their only "angsty" album, it sounds like it was written for social outcasts who are old enough to like girls, but not too old to stop watching cartoons or go tooling around on their bikes for long periods of time. By far their most underappreciated album, and it's a must-listen at the end of a summer for me.

"California Stars" by Wilco has already been mentioned twice, but deserves a third mention. Also, WIdespread Panic did a cover of "No Sugar Tonight" at a show once. I have it downloaded but can't find it on an album--it was a live recording.

Also, Zwan -- or Smashing Pumpkins Lite -- did a song called "Candy Came Calling". Great song but I haven't been able to find anything other than a crappy recording online - also recorded live.

I can't listen to Bruce Springsteen without vomiting a little -- unless it's "Brilliant Disguise" or "Tunnel of Love". Great songs.

I drove to Orlando today and a friend of mine asked me who we were listening to... I told him,"That's Jimi Hendrix you fool!!!" He had never heard the song, Dolly Dagger which is one of, if not my favorite Jimi Hendrix song. We started listing other songs by famous artists that don't get the love they deserve because they are overshadowed by the HITS.

Here's a few more we came up with:
FEARLESS by Pink Floyd - again, my personal favorite but nobody seems to know it because it is not on The Wall or Darkside. Fans dig it, but again most people don't know it.
Ophelia by The Band. People know Cripple Creek and The Weight, but not Opheilia????
Lovin' Cup by the Stones. Once more, its not 'Paint It Black' or 'Jumpin' Jack Flash' and it is a fucking great song.

Do you have any other great songs by popular bands that otherwise get overlooked?

Oh yea commercial radio. Just keep playing "Paranoid" and "War Pigs" everytime you promise a Sabbath fix. You fucking hacks.

Yeah, Vol. 4 is my favorite Black Sabbath album. Lots of cool stuff on that one.

But wouldn't you hate to hear all those songs all of you listed over and over again, like the "hits"? Doesn't being a "hit" turn you off about song?

Edit: I may have missed the point of the thread, but I think others did also. I would not want "my songs" played out like a top-forty ho. Anyway, anything off the "Band of Gypsies" album is classic, that album started the whole modern-blues schtick.

Not if you listen to them in moderation, but that is a very good point.
