I know a lot of people on here like to talk about their old school gaming systems. But when I think back to my childhood memories I'm not talking about the NES or Sega. I'm talking about the great Intellivision and Atari debate.

Actually it was probably no contest: Atari had Intellivision beat as far as market share goes. I was the only one of my group of friends who had an Intellivision. I firmly believe that once you got used to the Intellivision disc controller though, it was a vastly superior system than the Atari.

I actually still have my Intellivision and, believe it or not, it still works even though it's over 25 years old. I'll occasionally hook it up and play it with my eight year old son. He gets a kick out of it. Sometimes we'll play NFL Football on Intellivsion and follow it up with Madden '06 on PlayStation2.

Anybody else out there an old fart like me who had an Intellivision or Atari? ColecoVision was pretty good too but that came out towards the end of the video game craze and didn't seem to make a big impact.

Intellivision Vs.
It was just a variation on the Space Invaders/Galaxian type shooters, but I always enjoyed Megamania.

I had an Atari and I used to be obsessed with a game called Swordquest:Earthworld. A total clusterfuck of a game, but kind of interesting. Impossibly hard. When Atari released it, there was a national contest going along with it where if you beat it and followed along with a comic book that came along with it, you'd win. By the time I came along and was playing it, the contest was long over, but I still credit it as letting me cut my teeth as a nerd.

This was my first computer. I don't know what it was about my parents who insisted on making me the odd man out. When all my friends had Ataris, I got an Intellivision. And when everyone had Commodore 64s I got a ColecoVision Adam. To a kid who just wants to go with the crowd, and share experiences with his friends, this was as bad as bringing in coconut cupcakes to school.

no one mentions the Magnavox Oddessey. that was the best game console. They were known for their version of Pac Man which allowed you to design the maze and then it would dissappear until you hit a wall. they also had a Wall street game that was aheadof its time. Quite a shame that like Beta Oddessey was tossed to oblivion.

I had an Atari 800. Favorite game was K-Razy Shootout, wish I could find a
screen shot

_Krazy_Shoot-Out.jpg">
The Atari 800 was about $1000 and we got it back in 1980 or thereabouts.
It had a cassette player for playing games like sammy the SeaSerpent and
Hockey, but I recall we also had PacMan for it. I also had a Basic cartridge, so
I could copy basic coade into it and make it do really lame shit that wasn't
worth the effort - but come on, I was programming! Easy way to keep a kid
entertained, I guess.

Last month I got some ridiculously rare video of kids playing Atari Combat on local D.C. television - they are on the most basic level, and the 1970s kids are such noobs, like the concept of home video games, that neither kid can hit the other one for at least the first minute, even without barriers and even with them right next to each other.

(Image from game, but not a screen shot from this particular video)

It is seriously some funny video, that I have been forbidden in sharing with anyone, and have been told it will be my head if it shows up on YouTube. Hopefully it will be available sometime, because for video game fans, it really is funny shit.

I always look back to games such as Mouse Trap for the Colecovision as a classic. Even the Super Mario Bros. series are games that I have fond memories of... Then I go to a pawn shop and buy the system along with a few games and realize that we are so much better off never looking back. If you want to think about the games you played then so be it but please don't go back and play, you'll be ruined for life and every memory you have will never be interpreted with the same pleasure as you currently have.

I remember staring at my older brother playing Coleco Vision. I think he was always playing some Smurfts game, Venture, and River Raid. I was never allowed to play Coleco (they said I was too young- I guess those two pixel games were too violent or something). This means to a six year old that it's now my mission to play video games big-time. When Christmas rolled along my parents got my brother an NES, and that was the end of the game embargo on me.

cougarjake13 wrote:
other than ebay is there anywhere one could go to get old systems like the original nintendo, or genesis ???
I'm afraid not. I naively thought Gamestop would keep selling old NES and SNES systems, so I never thought to buy an extra couple systems for a couple twenties until it was too late. The thing that sucks the most is that I do still have an old SNES but it won't work because I have digital cable and that somehow prevents the SNES games from appearing on my TV screen.

colecovision kicked ass. I had a paperroute when it came out and the day it was released i remember playing donkey kong so long I couldnt collect to pay my bill. It was the first system that was almost arcade perfect. donkeykong jr, zaxxon, venture, tarzan, popeye, qbert et al all kicked ass. anyone have the roller controler with slither? They had a steering wheel too with a gas pedal if I remember correctly. The superaction controller also had a great boxing game called rocky. The adam computer was a shitty computer but it also played colecovision games and the data packs had expanded versions of donkey kong, donkey kong junior and buck rodgers.

vectrex was a nice vector based system. im fortunate to still have two of them. few people realize it had a 3d imager that hooked up to a controller port. It played a 3d version of minestorm a nd a rollrcoaster game. vectrex also had the first game that talked without the use of an adapter. It was called spike. it was kind of a donkey kong ripoff but the mainthing was the novelty of voice of the few phases it spoke(Eke help spike...Oh no molly)

Elevator action was a kickass game in the arcade and on gameboy and an updated version was made in japan for saturn. (I was fortunate enough to have a japanese saturn) Dont knwo why it wasnt brought here because it was great.
