I have seen this topic/question in some posts lately (post i have viewed lately). I thought i would share what i have found. Ever see a Cellular looking tower, may even have all sorts of omni-directional or quadrant antennas on it? (just picture a cell tower, k) Now, notice the cylinder/disc/drum like things attached on the sides of the tower? Those are microwave tranceivers (they transmit and receive data).

They transmit @ either 2.4 (like your wireless router), 5.8, 11 ghz (even higher frequency), but so does XM. They transmit in a straight line, and if you are directly underneath there x-mit path, boom no signal, but when you are driving because of the buffer in your radio you probably won't notice it. But as tower density becomes more, and more signals are criss-crossing above you, i would guess it would get worse. I have several near my house, and have parked my truck near, and up to a mile from the x-mitter and everytime my signal cuts out, when i am underneath the transmit path. I would imagine in major citys this problem becomes vastly greater.

I know. boring. but this is a major reason why. and yes i have too much free time.

If only this post touches one kid with cancers life... i will have not lived a wasted life.

Not boring at all. Interesting (to me) topic. That explains a lot. This should only make things worse.

Aren't XM's repeaters mounted on a lot of radio towers?

Also, my old job had a microwave transmitter to throw the signal to the tower 10 miles away, and I constantly drove in the path - I never had a prolem losing signal.

but your sperm count went down while you drove.

driving underneath wouldn't re-create the problem. If i drive under a bridge @ say no less than 10-15MPH i don't lose my signal cuz of the buffer in the radio. Same on the highway, quickly passing underneath bridges, or other interferences wouldn't do it. probably 3 weeks ago when i did my little test, i do remember the closer you are to the tower the wider the area of disruption.

I hate driving an underpass in traffic and losing signal. It always happens right before a huge joke and you hear the laughter afterwards.
