Does anybody have an opinion on the best way to self teach yourself on how to build a webpage.

What program to use ( Dreamweaver, FrontPage, etc ... ), what book/series to use ?

Not looking to do anything really indepth but not just a plain page w/out interaction.

i use dreamweaver. thats how i learned, because you can work graphically (i used to do 2D advert) so i would design images in photoshop and drop them into a blank page in dreamweaver. then you can see the properties for each image and make certain items linked, or rollover or whatever. Thats the simple part, you can then click(highlight) an image or text and switch to code view to see what it looks like in html.

I have learned flash in a similar fashion. But i still suck at it, and I am teaching myself C#/C++, written a few useless programs and have decided to go back to school for computer programming this spring (@ 31 its scary.)

but try dreamweaver. thats my opinion. if you learn by doing, then you might pick some stuff up, but you will definetly have questions..

So you're not sure how good Frontpage is ?

Most Microsoft stuff is usually fairly user friendly so I was wondering if that might be better.

How much does it cost to get a full version of DreamWeaver ( I know you can prob get it illegally for free ) ?

I guess my confusion is on whats the difference between HTML, XML, etc ... when building a page.

Do not use Frontpage if you value everything that is good in this world.
Learn HTML... it should take less than a day

Now that Dreamweaver is owned by Adobe, FrontPage should become history. And yes i would say you could definetly find it on one of those torrent or P2P listings. If you do, and say hypothetically i did that, once i found the program useful, and actually can't do without it, i went and bought it.

want to learn to insert video into your webpage, using the exact same script/flash as YouTube.

check out this site:

http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=Flash_Video_Player

it has an mp3 player for your site also. smart mofo.

And an awesome MP3/Audio player for your website, or it can be embedded in your forum posts.

http://musicplayer.sourceforge.net/

all have README files (open in wordpad if they have a funky/or no extension) and they are very easy to follow.

I also have over a 1000 web templates if you are interested, i tend to learn by reversing something, seeing how it functions and then adapting it to suit my own needs.

I happen to like the Peach Pit Press books for learning things. I'd pick up their basic html book. I happen to like dreamweaver, but I'd say start by using notepad and really learn the way html works first.

And don't use frontpage. ever. just adds extraneous code and mucks up your page.
