http://secondlife.com/

Anyone fimiliar with this website? Its a more interactive version of MySpace with amazing graphics and people from all over the world. Like the Sims video game meets myspace. You set up a profile and avatar and create virtual communities. All totally free. Just found out about it today. Still checking it out. The politician (and Presidential hopeful) Mark Warner has an avatar on the site. A completely seperate virtual world (hence the name). Sounds pretty wild and cool.

Anyone fimiliar with it?

Here's a discussion of what its about.

I've tried a bunch of times to get into that "game" but its just too open ended for my tastes. Every time I try it all I really get out of it is it being a big 3d chat room with everyone standing around the main areas typing to each other.

There are also a bunch of "adult" areas in the game like S&M clubs and goth clubs. For some reason people like standing around in a virtual dance floor dressed goth and in leather instead of going out to a real club.

There is a bunch of neat stuff in the game, but it always seems to be empty once you walk out of the main area.

Oh, and here, a big post I am stealing on it from PA. I would say get in on the discussion there if you want to really dive into the game. Add some of them to your in game list and they'll hook you up with tons of stuff.. my guy has a few dozen weapons, one of which was a nuke and it blew me so far into the air that I went above what was even rendered, it took me over a minute to fall back to the ground.

What is Second Life?

It's a chat room, it's a 3D modelling tool, it's a MMOG, it's a city
builder, it's a sailing game, it's a snail racing game, it's a boxing
game, it's a first person shooter, it's a roleplaying client, it's a
giant airship flight simulator, it's... Well, Second Life is pretty
much whatever you want it to be. Everything but the ground and the
basic avatars you build on are made by the players. Chances are if you
ask 'Can I...' the answer is yes if you're willing to do a little work!

Fair warning though, it's not really a game the way most people
think of it... There's no goal or purpose at all, and if you ask 'What
should I be doing?' the only person who can really answer that is
you... What do you want to be doing?

How much is it? Where can I get it?

A basic account is now totally free, and doesn't need anything more
than a valid email address for verification - A basic account can do
absolutely anything in the game except own land, and even then you can
rent land from other players... I have a basic account myself! To own
land you need to buy a premium account, and the cost rises depending on
how much land you actually want.

You can get it right here!

Now that you're in, here's a couple of the most common starter questions:

Where should I go?

I strongly recommend going through the tutorial - It's very short
and tells you how to control your camera (Which is different from any
other game I know of) and how to use landmarks and such. After you get
off newbie island it's definitely worth flying around a bit to just get
a feel for things and look at some of the amazing stuff around - The
starter area is in the heart of the oldest part of SL and has some very
nice stuff nearby!

After that though, here's a few good locations to start with! These
are SLurls, click them while SL is open in the background, then in the
window that pops up, select 'Teleport here'. In SL the map will open,
and you can select 'Teleport to destination' from the bottom right. Or,
you can just do a 'Search ' in game for it, they'll probably come up!

My last name I picked for that game is French for "bad" ... and I made myself with a big ass. I want all the virtual brothas hittin' it.

Oh wait, I forgot, I have a bit of a life.

I've been aware of it since it launched but had no desire to play with it. There's alot of cool community stuff going there, and there are people who can make their living making stuff on SL or selling things thru SL, which I find more interesting than actually playing it.

It's bad enough that he had to copy and paste the whole thing instead of just linking to it, but did you have to be an ass and quote the whole thing?

(And before I see the bit start, don't quote it again. All it does is fill up our database with unnecessarily big posts. )

Yes. I guess so. I'm not really great with computers, firewalls etc. Enlighten me.

So is anyone here actually playing the game?

I got a friend request from someone, was it from here?

Yes...It was from me. But then I got totally fucking freaked out because I was talking to this guy for like an hour, and then all the sudden he Im's me "have a nice trip to crashville"

I logged off and had no idea what to do with myself.

If you could simulate playing Half-Life in the game, would that be Life? If so, would it be the cereal or the board game?
