View Full Version : The Problem w/ P-FUNK

Let me start off by saying I am a huge FAN of Parliment Funkadelic's music.

I've seen George Clinton & The P-Funk All-stars over 100 times in the last 4 or 5 years.
The first time - was the best. It was new to me... loud... sweaty...stinky...energetic...and at the time, THAT show was enhanced by magical smoke I had inhaled before & during the show.

However,
Lateley, I'd say the last 3 or 4 times that I have traveled into the district to see them, I was very disapointed. George is a mess. It's like watching a 70 yr old baby on stage. He waddles on stage midway thru the set.. I can't understand him, it's the same set list over & over & over and over. The songs are played EXTREMELY SLOW as if the band was just learning the tunes. The once beautiful & clever harmonies have been reduced to just a bunch of people trying to sing into a microphone.
The once KILLER sound & mix has been reduced to what sounds like some high school freshman's car stereo - loud thumpy bass...and thats all u hear.

It's seems like they ( the band ) arent even awake or happy. They all look pissed now. Eyes closed, leaning up against the amps, standing in one spot...NO JUICE - NO ENERGY...

Is it my age? have I outgrown my beloved pfunk? Is it the fact that Im clean & sober now and maybe..just maybe.... they were never really THAT good to begin with?? .... and now Im hearing & seeing them with new eyes and ears?

OR maybe they just don't know when to quit. Like watching an old fighter past his prime. Not only is it disapointing... it's sad.

I walked out on them the last 2 times...

I think the mothership crashed & burned. Yet for some reason they still waddle on stage with 90 members and play to a full house... so it must be me.

George, I DONT want the funk anymore. Not from a 70 yr old crackhead who can';t even speak. Instead of "tearing the roof of the sucka" try tearing open a bottle of reality and STOP touring!

not EVERYTHING is meant to last forever.

I dunno.

for $40 a ticket, the least you could do is wake the fuck up before strolling onto the stage midway thru the set.and at least pretend your having fun.

RIP

PFUNK

Like I said in the "Raped By Rock Stars" thread, I have absolutely no desire to see my beloved Rolling Stones anymore - especially at the prices they're charging. I prefer to remember them at the top of their game. Although the musicianship might be there, the energy and passion seems to fade with time. I guess the same can be said for P-Funk.

It's sad, but what can you do? Just crank up some of the classic albums and don't let their last 2 shows taint your view of them. I've never seen P-Funk live, but I love their stuff. I'll be sure to keep my perfect zero attendance after reading your review.

I'd still go to a Stones show - only because I've never seen them and would like to someday.

And whats with the KILLERS?

The problem with the KILLERS -

They are drama queen wimps. Nothing "Killer" about them..

Its kinda sad when bands don't realize its time to stop. I guess they'll always go on tour as long as people are willing to buy tickets ....

The reason these bands continue to keep right on going when thay have lost all of the passion for the music is because there is money to be made. When people stop going to the shows, the shows will stop.
Agreed Perry, I saw P-Funk up here in the spring and they were very lackluster. I thought it was due to a rain delay..guess not.
