Kansas Bartender Gets $10,000 Tip

Wow. . . a 38,000% tip. Not bad.

This story got me thinking. Based on what I've read on this board I know that a lot of us have worked in the service industry at some point. So, are there any good/bad tip stories? Either that you left or recieved.

As for me, I used to work in the Houlihan's in Secaucus, NJ, just across the river from the Meadowlands. A lot of the players would often come there. Most tended to be good tippers. One time Carl Banks of the Giants left me a $100 tip on about a $100 check. 100% - not bad.

This other time I had a table of about 6 kids in their teens. Their parents were staying at the Holiday Inn next door and just dropped them off. The little bastards ran me ragged. I assumed that the parents were going to show up by the end of the meal - but no dice. They left me a 51 cent tip on a $150 check!

As for me tipping: If you ask my wife she'll tell you I over-tip. But if the service is really bad, I'll make it a point to leave exactly 15% or maybe just under. I've mentioned the biggest tip I ever left in another thread - when I left a $1,000 tip to an Atlantic City casino dealer. Believe me, I still catch hell on a daily basis from my wife on that one

My best tip came from my grandpa, who told me to "stay in school"

Any server will tell you that the worst tippers are kids. Bar none. One of the reasons I never worked on Saturday nights is because of the influx of kids who came into the place, and the money you made was never worth the aggravation you'd endure of 6 and 8 tops of high school kids who squat in your station and don't free up the table for other people who could tip better.

I always enjoyed getting bigwigs drunk off their asses on Ultimate drinks during business lunches, and reaping the rewards of the huge tips, not just off the percentage of how much the bill was, but how good of a mood they were in.

The best tip I ever got was from my parents' neighbor. They weren't friends of the family, but the kind of people you wave hi and bye to. Very Italian. VERY Italian.

Since I knew them, I made sure to take extra good care of them, and I even gave the patriarch (whose birthday it was) a free slice of cheesecake, much to the consternation of my kitchen manager, who screamed at me about food cost.

I was left a 100 dollar tip PLUS a gift card to Target (it was near Christmas time).

Another great tip was a family who was gushing about Fridays' honeymustard, which, admittedly, is fucking awesome. I gave them a small container of it to take home - probably about 12 ounces - and they gave me a huge tip.

Postscript to that story - the family sent a letter to the company headquarters about how great the service they got from "Matt", which was sent to our store. Another server by the name of Matt took credit for the letter and got a bonus (I was on vacation at the time). When I got back, I was so pissed off by what happened - especially since the manager didn't believe me - I quit that week, but not related to the letter - that was the first domino.

I got a $100 tip on a $6 beer once from a drunk irishman, which was pretty
fantastic.

If the guy is drunk, or a foreigner who is not that familiar with the currency or the customs, does anyone think there should be an obligation to advise them that they went nuts with the tip? I'll be honest and say I probably wouldn't myself.

But if they were foreign and didnt understand I would 100% give it back to them.

Oh, I let him know. He insisted that it was for me. He'd actually handed me
$200 - one $100 bill to pay the $6, and one $100 for me. He insisted. I
wasn't about to be rude and not take it!

I always tip big. The amount of free drinks/food/cover charges/phone numbers that have resulted because of me doing that has more than paid back the extra cost. You get what you put in!

Gvac's post reminds me of something that has been bothering me for more years than I care to admit.

"Actually, I'm Dutch/Irish."

"Well, my kraut/mick friend..."

Why couldn't they redo the script to make him say "German/Irish"? Or come up with a Dutch euphemism? (if there is such a thing)

Little things like this keep me up nights.

i used to work at the front desk of a hotel a few years ago. one time an irish guy wanted tickets to some match manchester united match at the meadowlands. i was able to get the tickets thru a broker we use for like 200-250 each, of which they kicked about half of it back to me. then the guy tipped me 50 on top of that.

another incident involves a big-name r&b singer who used to stay with us for months at a time. he would order delivery from a diner for almost every meal. one time, he called down and asked the front desk to pay for the meal and put it on his bill. when the clerk asked him if he'd like to leave a tip for the delivery guy, he replied with "not really"...click.
