Sorry H. But I caught it before you did.

Anybody else hear about A-Rod calling in the famous college coach (Who's name escapes me) to give him a motivational speech? And how he stayed at the ballpark for an hour w/Mattingly doing batting practice after the 4 strikeout game?

All I want from Torre is to move him to the 6 hole. He's leaving a small army on the bases, especially with the way Damon Jeter and Abreau are getting on base. I think he will once the playoffs start if he doesn't straighten himself out. But actually I fear he'll do just enough to stay there, then cost us a game or two in October.

has made three rehab starts with the rib injury. He disclosed it to
the team Saturday after feeling discomfort in his most recent minor
league outing.

"Of course I'm angry," Cashman said, adding that "it's
extremely frustrating" and "it's extremely disappointing."

Cashman still hopes Pavano would be able to pitch in the major

"We have had players play with this issue before," he said.

He better.

my HA HA was for the injuries that they had to deal with. that was mainly because of the haters giggling with glee as the yanks had to rebuild on the fly with their own injuries and are/were pulling it off.

BDC, leave it as is. nothing like being arrogant even if the yanks do lose.

And being recorded on tape.

Jeter said when asked he he was upset at Pavano "Well, I'm not paying the guy" and laughed. (This is Jeter, who always says the PC thing)

Damon said "I heard he was in a really expensive car when it happened. Gee, I hope the car is alright"

And both went on to say he hasn't been around enough this year for them to have an opinion of him one way or the other.

And Torre delivered the final blow "I dont expect him to be back this year"

Sounds to me like the entire organization is pushing this pussy out the door. an utter lack of fear under pressure. The same can be said of Jason
Giambi. Unlike A-Rod or Randy Johnson, those players don't worry about
consequences, nor are they consumed by the opinions of others.

Somehow, Rodriguez went from all-universe shortstop to an unreliable
third baseman who anticipates failure. Instead of envisioning how he'll

If he's fired after the season, he will have a new job as soon as one opens up. I'm sure the Cubs would love to have him, and I'm sure that's his managerial dream job. He's too talented and has too good of a reputation for the Marlins to screw up his career, and Loria doesn't have the best rep as an owner so I doubt many teams will put any weight into what he thinks of Girardi.

"I'm not going to sit here and wonder when he's going to pitch. I've
got work to do," the manager said before Tuesday's game with Detroit
was postponed. "Everyone has the same obligation to get himself ready
to play."

Torre has no curiosity about the details of the crash, which
according to the police report was Pavano's fault and totaled his
Porsche. Torre doesn't want to know why his pitcher pretended he was
healthy during those minor league starts, nor does Torre wrestle with
the most perplexing question of all:

If Pavano was indeed able to pitch effectively with broken ribs, why
did he report the pain just before he was supposed to rejoin the
Yankees?

Torre sees this mess through one prism only: Pavano is either a liar
(or else someone who fails to tell the whole truth, which is
essentially the same species) and therefore can't be trusted.

Torre's world revolves around trust -- and as he kept saying Tuesday, "It goes both ways."

Again, Bob Klapisch is one of the best sports columnists around, and I think the best Yankee beat writer. Love his work, his measured tone and his sources are excellent. I always get something I didn't hear before with him. And you never get wild, uninformed opinions in his columns, just solid reporting.

More carnage from the Klapisch article

Even the way Pavano became a Yankee offers insight into Pavano's
troubled soul. Not long after signing his contract, the pitcher fired
agent Scott Shapiro for failing to get George Steinbrenner to agree to
a $40 million final sum.

The Boss, for his own quirky reasons, insisted on lowering the tab
by $50,000. Shapiro agreed to the 1.25 percent reduction, but Pavano
dismissed him and vowed to withhold the commission. The matter is now
in arbitration, despite the union's appeal to Pavano to drop the case.

Ever since Pavano arrived in New York, he's acting like a man
second-guessing himself. He's been surly in the clubhouse, but
displayed none of that aggression on the mound.

It wasn't long after Pavano's second start against Boston -- 32/3
innings, five runs, 11 hits in a 17-1 loss -- that he reported shoulder
pain. Now it's reasonable to ask whether Pavano was truly too injured
to pitch, or if he was simply spooked by the beating he took from the
American League.

Pavano may have deserved the benefit of the doubt early on, but the
Yankees have since learned to be wary. If Pavano could be evasive about
a car accident, what else hasn't he told them in a year and a half?

People who know Pavano say he is immature, self-absorbed, prone to
treating people badly. The Yankees never asked Pavano to win any
humanitarian awards, only to win ballgames. Now there's reasonable
doubt whether Pavano even wants that.

That Klapisch article screams contract voiding.

They would never succeed in getting that contract voided. And beyond that, what kind of message would it send to potential free agents that for the second time in two years the Yankees are looking for a way to weasel out of a bad contract?
Tenbatsuzen wrote:

That Klapisch article screams contract voiding.

Doubtful. The only thing they have on him is not disclosing an injury, but Klapisch also made a good point that Pavano could argue he was trying to help the team by pitching through it. Beyond that, he's just been a total waste of money that gets injured every couple of months.

It's just a really, really bad signing by the Yankees, and they're going to have to eat millions no matter if they keep him or trade him. Who would trade for a pitcher that doesn't pitch, but makes $10 million a year is beyond me though.

I am hoping he will ease up a bit when the rosters are expanded. Hopefully he gets Dotel some extensive work and tests him out.
2) Since you probably don't truly understand the phrase "can't see the forest for the trees", it simply refers to being too close to the problem to see the solution. This pretty much sums up the mentality of 90% of the yank fans out there.

Didn't you hear Spoon? There is no problem. The Yankees will win just because they are the Yankees, it is their divine right. Holes in the out field? Who cares? You can always get a $15 million per year right fielder who would be a franchise player and the highest paid guy on 95% of the teams in the league, but on the Spankees he is just a nice little pick up to sure up that ailing line-up which was forced to play half the season with only 6 $10 million + a year guys in their starting line up, not to mention 4 or 5 more in their pitching staff. Joe Torre is a genius for navigating through those tough times when the Yankkes were only putting $160 million product ($40 million more than anyone else) on the field every day instead of $200 million one. Thank God they got Abreu...and if Matsui and Sheff come back Cano will be the only guy who isn't making at least 8 figures to even see the field in October, and that is only because he is pre-arbitration still. The team is a joke, and if you are from NYC area and were with them through the rough times in the '80's and early '90's, I can respect that...I still think you are all annoying as hell, but that is your team and this is your city and their are two ways to go and you chose the Spanks for whatever reason....But if you are not from around here and are a big Yankee fan, you are a god damn front runner and you make me sick. And there are no exceptions to that rule, unless you relocated. And if you are from an area that has its own team and you claim to be a Yankee fan, you are truley disgraceful and should be ashamed of yourself....you are not taken seriously by anyone as a sports fan, especially New Yorkers.

OK, maybe I should take back what I just said. The thing is, all I want is some consistency out of A-Rod at this point. That's all. he doesn't have to lead. He doesn't have to hit a home run at every at bat. I just want positive consistency.

And who the fuck are you that I'd want, need or give a rat's ass about gaining your respect?! If you recall, we had it out really early when you came to the board, way before you transitioned into this gay, high school political game playing fool with me. Your attempt to cry to the mods only makes me laugh harder as you've broken plenty of your stated rules in that very post. And how many times will you go down the lame maturity angled road while wimpering like a toddler.

I don't attack you to go after you personally. I attack your posts, ideas and insane yankee rants which in turn hits you below the belt in that soft cushion you call a sack but is more appropriately labeled a vagina. I also love the fact that you "ignore" me (not even close), and "DONT respond in kind" since every other post is a response or diatribe about your superior debating skills and ability to read the same myopic yankee writer day in and day out making you the authority on the entire league. Never do I put myself out there as a internet tough guy as you stated as I could care less if you think I'm tough. There is a huge difference between truly being annoyed by another post's posts and trying to be "tough". You argue in much the same fashion on politics in that there is hardly anything that comes from the opposing view that you'd even consider and when one doesn't agree, they're simply wrong. And the overall simple fact that you obviously don't get is that you're on a message board, not in front of a UN commitee (bad ref I guess with you being an uber republican and seeing no use for the UN). Hence your claim or stance on maturity is just an utter joke. Especially since I get along with plenty of other yank fans, and for that matter, argue like mad with them as well.

Here, I'll use a gay cliche (instead of arguing since you can't handle it) to help you understand things better since you like to talk in this verse. I'm sorry you can't see the forest for the trees, bc truly you aren't even aware one bit the dilema the league is in and the danger it poses.
It is SCARY to think how good this lineup will be with a fully functional A-Rod batting cleanup. 3 HR's and 6 hits in two days, both pitchers were righties. Damon Jeter Abreau and Giambi keep doing their thing and alot of pitchers are going to have a rough first inning. And 3rd and 5th.

I also think the crowd has turned a corner with him. A month ago it was fashionable to boo him, when he was the big gun in the lineup, the team was in 2nd place and he was coming up empty more often than not. He was getting booed for hitting a HR if the team was up a few runs. Now, he hit one with the team up 6-0 and he got cheered out of the dugout for a curtain call. Maybe after seeing him struggle the way he did, fans are now ready to embrace him again. I hope so. I haven't been so happy to see a player do well in a long time.

Here's a question. The Yanks will almost certainly play the Wild card team in a 5 game series
in the divisional round of the playoffs. As it stands right now, thats either the White Sox or Minnesota.

Who would you rather play?

Factor this in, Liriano says he's healthy and will be back with the team within a week or so.

I also wouldn't be too swayed by the series the Yanks and Twins just played, since neither team pitched their top of the rotation guys and saturdays game was played in a monsoon.

I'm pretty clear on this, I'd rather play the White Sox by a long shot. I think the Yanks can pitch with them, and have a clear edge in the bullpen. I also think the Yanks can match them with their lineup. To be honest, the Sox probably have the second best lineup in baseball, behind the Yanks. So I think they can outslug them and out pitch them, though it would be a tough series. Maybe going the full 5.

The Twins may be the only team the playoff hunt right now (I think the Astros are toast) that can throw 2 stud pitchers at you, possibly/probably starting both of them in 4 of the 5 games. And they have a solid bullpen to back up their starters. Their lineup is so so. Alot of light hitters with maybe 3 guys that can hurt you. But in the playoffs, pitching tends to dominate. And they can pitch, top to bottom. I'd MUCH rather face them in a 7 game series than a 5.

In also think that whoever wins the divisional round vs the Yanks, be it the Yanks, White Sox or Twins, will go on to win the World Series. So that 5 game set may be the "real" World Series, with the two best teams facing each other.

The Yanks today finished their toughest stretch of the year 15-12. Outside of Boston they were 10-12. In that 27 game stretch, 21 of which without an off day, they lost a series to Chicago, split a series at home to the Angels, lost a series at home to Baltimore, swept Boston in Boston, lost a series at Seattle, lost a series at the Angels, won a series at home over Detroit and won a series over the Twins. Not particularly impressive though they were obviously exhausted after the Boston series. The rain delay on Tuesday was a blessing giving them two days off.

And here's what's left: 3 at Kansas City, day off, four at Baltimore, 3 home vs. Tampa Bay, 4 home vs. Boston including another doubleheader, 3 at Toronto, day off, four at Tampa, 3 home vs. Baltimore, 3 home vs. Toronto. A whole lot of AL East.

Mussina returns and starts Tuesday. That is a big start. If Mussina can't regain form this team isn't going far.

slight lull the next two seasons. After drawing 67.6 million fans in
2003, ticket sales began to rise again in 2004 with 72.9 million fans,
and last season, fan attendance climbed to 74.9 million fans. This
season, baseball is at a pace to equal or surpass that amount.

I know there are those who think that baseball is in bad shape, the league is a mess. This shows thats simply not the case. There haven't been any new expansion teams added in that period, so that means its average attendance they're talking about. Salaries have also leveled off from the early 2000s period where guys were routinely getting 17-20 million (and above) to where now 17 appears to be the ceiling and most are getting below that. So they have certainly leveled off from that previous market. If I was running this business, I'd keep doing what I was doing.

I know the Yankee attendance has never been better, they're averaging 52,000 per game and will set an all-time attendance record of 4.2 million fans this year. Thats almost capacity for Yankee stadium, especially when you consider press passes and charity give aways. 10 years ago nobody thought was possible. They also are charging more every year and people keep paying it. Tix now range from $12 for bleachers to $115 for feild box per seat, with the average seat around $50.

BTW-Yankee attendance jumped from around 3.5 mil before A-Rod showed up to 3.8, 4.0 and now 4.2 million. Thats why they would be extremely hesitant to trade him, unless he had a complete nervous breakdown on the field or something. Which seemed possible about a week ago.

I know the Yankee attendance has never been better, they're averaging 52,000 per game and will set an all-time attendance record of 4.2 million fans this year.
They also are charging more every year and people keep paying it.
Yet, they somehow thought it would be a good idea to shrink capacity in the new Stadium down to 50,000. If every seat is always filled, why miss out on a bunch of money by providing fewer seats?

3 reasons. First one is luxury boxes. If you add luxury boxes to the exact same stadium, you'll lose some seats.

Second is smaller is the trend ever since they built Jacobs Field and Camden Yards. Better sight lines for the fan, less steep upper deck, more cozy feel to the place. So the average fans will be the winner there.

#3 is if you have less tickets available, demand goes up. When people know there's an abundance of available seats, they feel no urgency to get one. When they know the place is sold out every night, that same person will fall over themselves trying to get in the place. The Studio 54 effect. Tell people they cant get in and they'll line up out the door to try. And happily pay whatever you ask them to.

If you've ever sat upstairs at Yankee stadium the fucking thing is about a 60 degree angle, which is very steep. I've seen people fall 2 or 3 rows just trying to get out of their seats. Plus you cant see the action directly below you on foul balls and pop ups.

I've heard some Met callers on the fan complaining about their new stadium (Which I like even better than ours), saying "The little guy gets screwed, less seats for us" They're absolutely clueless.

I think they charge right now as much as they can get away with, and will continue to do so. So prices will go up no matter what. But then they complain about it. If they feel lucky to get their seat, they'll complain less. They'll probably enjoy the experience more, knowing that they got a "tough" ticket. This is all marketing and economics bullshit, but it works.

Plus they'll have a better seat, so they win right there.

All right. There is this show on YES right now - I'm guessing it's Kids on Deck - and it shows Posada working out with a personal trainer who looks like a combination of Kimberly Page, Debbe Dunning, and Charisma Carpenter. She's wearing an electric blue workout outfit and she's got these REALLY nice breast implants.

My question - who is she?

But that's my point. Demand doesn't need to go up at Yankee Stadium. They're already selling every seat.

Anyone else think that Michael Kay has done much fewer games this year compared to other years. Im not sure, but it seems like he's rarely there.

apparently you are, cause he's playing.

Hi. This is HBox. I am here tonight to speak to you about an issue near and dear to my heart. Reliever abuse.

There can be nothing more devastating to a reliever than inappropiate and over-use. The bullpen should be a sancutary, a safe harbor from every storm. Yet, for many Yankee relievers, the Yankee bullpen is a place of danger and fear of an abusive manager.

Paul Quantrill knows that fear. He lived it as a Yankee. Even in his early days, Paul stayed away from the bullpen, fearful of his own manager,
who abused his closer.

I interviewed Paul about his experience in the Yankee bullpen.

HBox: Tell me about your life in the bullpen before Joe Torre.

PQ: It was great.I was used sensibly and I pitched great. One year I had a sub-2 ERA!

HBox: What happened next?

PQ: He, Joe, he........

HBox: Did he pitch you?

PQ: (crying) yes....... he pitched me.........

HBox: Where did he pitch you? Show me on the box score.

PQ: One time....... he pitched me....... with an 11 run lead........... for almost 3 innings!!!!!

HBox: I'm sorry, do you need to take a minute?

PQ: No..... No..... go on.

HBox: How.......how often did he pitch you?

PQ: One time he pitched me 10 times in a 14 game stretch! 12 innings in 14 games! A MAN CAN ONLY TAKE SO MUCH!!!!!

HBox: And what happened next?

PQ: My ERA went up 3 runs! My beautiful ERA was gone forever. Next thing I knew I was in Florida, then San Diego. Now I'm out of the league. My...... MY CAREER IS OVER!!!! (hysterically crying)

HBox: I'm so sorry. Johnny, cut the tape.

But poor Paul is not the only victim.

My name is Tanyon Sturtze. Before I came to New York, no one wanted to pitch me anymore. But then Joe Torre entered my life. He pitched me all the time. At first I loved it. I was pitching great for the first time in my life! But then he kept on pitching me, and pitching me, and pitching me. HE WOULDN'T STOP PITCHING ME!!!!!! Pretty soon I was on the DL with a "tired arm." No one ever saw me again.

Luckily there have been those who have escaped the Yankee Bullpen.

HBox: Tell me about your time in the Yankee Bullpen.

Tom Gordon: Wow. That was a rough time. Two years that felt like ten.

HBox: How much did he pitch you?

TG: Let me put it this way. I pitched more in my two years in the Yankee bullpen than I did in the 4 years before that.

HBox: Oh my. What happened next.

TG: I got the fuck out of there bitch! No amount of money would have kept me there.

HBox: You must have really wanted out.

TG: I NEEDED out. I went to fucking Philadelphia! A team with a miserable fanbase, a lousy team at the time and a park the size of a Little League stadium! Speaks for itself.

HBox: Did you get out unscathed?

TG: Not really. My ERA is up a run even thought I went down to the junior league. And I ended up on the DL. I'll........ I'll never be the same. (starts crying)

There are those who can survive the horrors of the Torre bullpen.

I like to pitch the beisbol.

[quote][b]IF SOME MOTHERFUCK

Does anyone hear check out the ESPN.com baseball chats? I was in one yesterday with Gary Gillette, and the Yankees bullpen became a running theme throughout the chat. It was also a them during the last Neyer chat, which pissed off many of the other Yank-haters in the room.

Personally, I think it's a running thing with Torre to rely heavily on a couple of relievers, which has cost him the past few years when they had "must-win" games into late September. I think now is the best time to work other guys like Bruney and Dotel into games more often to see what they can give you. It never hurts to have another strong reliever in October.

I dont get the Dotel thing myself. Seems to me he obviously needs work, and has electric stuff.
But Karstens has really opened some eyes, no doubt about it. PLus he seems so unflappable, good make up for a Yankee pitcher.
Jeter is absolutely an MVP candidate. What's he's doing is much more valuable out of his position. That is in VORP (Value over Replacement Player) in which Jeter is second in the AL, well ahead of Dye and David Ortiz. Just because he isn't creating runs by hitting shitloads of HRs doesn't mean he isn't creating runs. He is creating runs in his own way and that should be recognized. Jeter has more hits and walks than Dye. He as more runs scored than Dye with 28 fewer HRs. I'm not ready to say Jeter is the MVP but he will be rightly considered.

First of all, VORP is an absurb stat only used by stat geeks. Speak english, please.

Dye has been a terrific player for many years, just like Jeter. And his numbers (Total bases, total runs produced) beat Jeter, hands down.

Dye .325 BA 40HRs 91 Runs 110 RBIs .392 OBP .639 SLG

Jeter .344 12 HRs 97 runs 87 RBIs .420 OBP .485 SLG

They different players, and have different roles on their respective teams. But Dye's more important. Jeter could get on base all he wants, he needs guys like Dye for it to mean anything. And Dye's OBP is almost .400 anyway, which is excellent.

The Award is Most VALUABLE Player. Sorry, the Yanks are an all star team, of which Jeter is just one of those stars. He is the Captain, he is more than his #'s if you watch him play every day. But he just doesn't have the numbers to warrant an award like that.

Mauer is WAY more valuable to the hitting-challenged Twins. Where would they be without him? Nowhere. Where would the Yanks be without Jeter? Maybe only 5 games up instead of 10 in the loss. But still in 1st place.

You insist on giving it to a Yankee? Give it to Mo.

First of all, VORP is an absurb stat only used by stat geeks. Jeter is better than the average replacement shortstop than Dye is over the average replacement Right fielder.

And the argument you use against Jeter is just as relevant, if not more so (and I would argue moreso), with Dye. Dye has Iguchi, Thome, Konerko, and Crede batting around him. Jeter has Damon, A-Rod on an off-year and the streaky Giambi. He's had Abreu for a month. And has Dye really carried the White Sox all season? I remember that Thome drove them for the first half of the year. I'd rank David Ortiz higher than Dye.

And I'd say Morneau is more important to the Twins than Mauer.

The MVP is not the slugger on a great team award. If they gave it to who is truly the most valuable it would go to either Santana or Travis Hafner.
