And if you're have Plan A or B (50-82 games) you get your specific seat(s) automatically. I had to go online @ 10:00 sharp and get whatever I could as fast as I could. I did OK. I got 2 seats for the ALDS game 1, 2 seats for Game 6 of the ALCS. And I got two GREAT FIELD LEVEL WS TIX. . . . for games one and two. So I have to go by myself or sell them. If its vs the Mets, I'll go. If not I'll sell them. Stubhub has them going for $700-1100 each (they cost $250 each). I have a feeling if they play the Mets, the $ will go alot higher. Regular season Bosox games sell for 3X face value on Stubhub, and this is the fucking WS were talking about, possibly a subway series.

A great quote in the lockerroom last night was after Kim Jones said, "They say you might end up giving your wrist a third cortisone shot. You'll do whatever it takes to win at that point?" and Giambi replies, "I'll do ANYTHING it takes to win."

Yes you will, Jason. Yes you will.

Actually, if Giambi sits because of the bad wrist it means Melky will be very likely to start in LF. That would put (hold onto your hats) Sheffield at first, and Matsui at DH.

I think Melky has been huge to the defense and chemistry of this group, and want him to play more than Sheff. Giambi being hurt could open things up for him.

Right now on YES, they're replaying the A-Rod bottom-of-the-12th walk-off against the Braves. Coincidence? Or does someone at the station wanna rally some support for A-Rod?

Yah seriously. At least the rest of these clowns have been here all year long while you just pop in when times are grand. Suck it Tom, we all know you couldn't pick out a yankee outside of Jeter in a police lineup if your life was on the line. And the only reason you know what Jeter looks like is because you have a man-crush on him as if you were a 15 year old girl. Do you have a tight #2 yank jersey to yank it in? I guess BDC can answer that one. Or perhaps Stugots since he's so overboard with his pics of tits and god knows you're stacked. Hell, between the three of you (BDC, Stu and Justice), you can surely start your own titty bar you sloppy messes. Why not just put a pic of your own up there Stu? A little hair never hurt in Chelsea! At least that's what Waddles used to say.

Isn't it amazing how quickly Wang has become such a huge pitcher for the Yankees? 18 wins in his 2nd year in the majors, and according to YES, he's starting GAME 1 of the ALDS. This guy took the express elevator to the top floor.

How much importance do you place on home field advantage throughout the playoffs? Currently, the Yankees are 1/2 game back of the Tigers, with the Twins just a game back of the Yankees.

I know people that think it's a big edge to have. However, in my experience, home field advantage, seems to have little to no advantage (at least in baseball).

I don't know about the historical stats in the playoffs, so I'm not gonna pull out any numbers from my ass... But home field provides an abundantly clear advantage during the regular season.

New York
Home: 47-28
Road: 46-34

Boston
Home: 45-31
Road: 38-42

Toronto
Home: 49-31
Road: 33-42

The Yankees don't have a drastically better record at home, but it IS better. The Red Sox and Blue Jays are both WELL over .500 at home, and UNDER .500 on the road.

Also, having last licks in the bottom of the 9th isn't just an intangible advantage (like crowd support, field familiarity), it's a legit advantage.

Jeeze... Even as a Yankee fan, this is one of the most brutal starts to a ballgame I've ever seen. Two 3-run homers, two very heated ejections, a 15-pitch at-bat that ends with a homerun, and more booing than an Opie & Anthony comedy event. Poor Seo.

As if I didn't already wanna sever the heads of John Sterling & Suzyn Waldman enough... I was just washing dishes (and yeah, I wore an apron. So what?), and I don't have the luxury of a TV in my kitchen. So I was forced to endure the radio broadcast of the game. And I was so filled with rage, I probably came dangerously close to a stroke.

Someone in the Tampa Bay crowd has a metal object, not sure exactly what, that they are using to rally the crowd. I don't mind this, especially since Yankee Stadium probably has the most famous metal-knocker in all of baseball... The beloved Freddy:

Nobody is saying they don't contribute...it's just a tedious cliche that's gets tossed around like it's "the formula" to winning a WS when it isn't.

I think you're both mostly right. Mojo's right that you dont have to have good pitching and defense to win a WS. Look at the 2003 Angels. lousy defensively and no big time starters to speak of. The 2004 Bosox were typical of Boston teams in that they couldn't catch the ball much, but had a top hitting team and two aces as starters. And the Atlanta Braves proved for 10+ that you need more than some great pitchers and some guys that can catch the ball behind them to win it all.

That being said, the Yanks got away from the versitile hitters they had in their run of 1994-2000. Guys like Soriano, Sheffield, A-Rod proved to be enormous graveyards for too many rallies in recent years. As opposed to the teams during the run that had more "pass the baton" type hitters.

And the best Yankee team ever saw was 1998, not a single player was a starter on the All Star team that year. Because they weren't "me" guys, they were "team" guys.

But if this Yankee team wins it all (which most prognosticators think they will) it will certainly NOT be with great pitching and defense. It will be with their lineup.

Bob Lorenz saying "offensive orgy" was merely a reiteration of Michael Kay, who used the exact phrase earlier in the night during the game.

GOOOOD Morning Yankee fans. And what a glorious morning it is indeed.

Our second season (was there any doubt?) begins as other nay-sayers have to shut their mouths in utter defeat. All the haters now sitting at home and stewing as we march to a, hopefully, 27th World Series victory.

We hear that, not only are the quickly-falling Detroit Tigers coming to town, but Randy Johnson seems to be in much better form.

We finish the year tied with the Mets for the best record in baseball. Now before you shudder and go "Ewww...the Mets??" take it as a compliment to the Yankees. Willie obviously took alot of managerial advice and points from Joe Torre and worked it into the Mets system. What game do you think Torre will have to change the lineup in? Not at all this round, 2,3,4 or 5? Do you think he will need to put Melky in for defense, or Giambi at first, or Bernie at Dh for a game? Theres so many combos but will any of them need to be applied.

Don't worry, the yanks paid a hell of a lot of money to lose in the playoffs again. You two are so witty I can't contain my laughter.

Go Detroit!

and the jays didnt spend money to put their team together? i was actually impressed that they made some big moves in the off season and was looking forward to them being more competitive in the east. same goes for the O's.

BTW, speaking of wit, your stupid Tiger picture wasnt exactly Bill Hicks worthy either. so, how is the view in your glass house?

Wit? I posted a literal tiger to root for the tigers, you tried to be funny pulling up tired cliches and stupid one liners. There's a difference Stu. As for the Jays the UPPED their payroll to $70 million from $45-50 or so the year before. So in the end this payroll jump is a drop in the bucket compared to what you pay Arod alone. That's 15 more 10 million players to work with. But I won't get this going again as we all have our opinions on the league and payroll tied to winning.

spoon the yanks didnt give AROD his contract they took it over from a team that gave it to him. big difference. Any jump in payroll is a jump. but, it is good to see other teams spending instead of the same two or three. the last few weeks of the season have been interesting to watch.

let me ask you this, seriously, in this day and age of free agency, should any team that has the money not spend it? do you think that if the yanks didnt pay someone big bucks that there isnt another team that would? i am serious here, not throwing mud.

I've talked about this seriously plenty of times before but I'll rehash my thoughts quickly. Basically I don't think a team that makes only $7 million on a season (eg. Brewers or KC) should throw it all right back just to get 4 -10 more wins best case senario. That gets them what, 3rd place? Teams that make a shitload and don't put much into the team are few and far between. The Jays have been able to increase their payrolls for two reasons: 1) Their attendence continues to rise five years in a row. 2) The new owner actually had money and was financially stable unlike the corp that owned them before. Corps should rarely be allowed to own franchises bc it's all bottom line and rarely an investment type look ahead. The stock tie-in never helps the overall pic of a team owned by a corp that's public.

Wang was great and Jeter is god.

That's all I can say.
Doctor Z
10-03-2006, 08:51 PM
Actually, I lied. I can say more.
As if he couldn't be anymore legendary in the post-season, Derek Jeter added yet another page to his Yankee lore tonight. Going 5 for 5, with 2 doubles and a HR, he proved once again that he lives for October baseball.
Chien-Ming Wang, who is only in his second year in the majors, walked into this season as the team's 3rd or 4th starter. A major league leading 19 wins later, he is the Game 1 starter for the New York Yankees, and regardless of the post-season pressure, he performs as consistently as ever. This kid has ice flowing through his veins. He doesn't panic with runners on, the limelight doesn't scare him, and he gets the job done.
As far as Joe Torre... Yeah, he should've let Wang finish the 7th, I'll agree with that. But he went for the matchup and it didn't work out. Bottom line is, he walked away with an 8-4 win, and I wouldn't want anyone else in his place right now.

My thought:

Since Wang is the least beat up of the Yankees top three pitchers, perhaps Torre and Co. wanted to keep him under 100 pitches so if he's needed for relief in GM 3 or an accelerated start , he may be available?

I think A-Rod needed a big postseason to turn around Yankee fans. He's said so himself many times. Strikes out LOOKING with the bases loaded in the first, follows it up with a few more strikeouts in a one run game. I think Leyland is taking Maddog's advice and "Let A-Rod beat you". In which case, were doomed.

He has huge #'s against Kenny Rogers, something like 10-19 with 5 HR's. If A-Rod doesn't have a big day tomorrow, I think we can all admit that this has been a failed experiment and he should be traded in the off season. If he cant hit a guy he owns in the postseason, who can he hit? And how can you have confidence putting hikm in the lineup anywhere? He has more enemies than friends in the clubhouse, and he's had 2 sub par A-Rod years out of the 3 he's played here, and more self induced drama than I can stomach. I thought with him as the #6 hitter he wouldn't bother me, like thinking of Unit as your 3rd or 4th starter makes him easier to deal with. But as Torre says "it will find you" and it found A-Rod today.

I also think the Yanks are in big trouble. Despite the fact they beat Rogers like a rented mule, I have no confidence in the 43 year old with the cranky back and worse attitude. I can easily see that game being 7-6 in the 5th and we have a battle of the bullpens. Which is a battle I think we'll lose. Then its Jaret Wright to save the season.

We have problems.

This message was edited by Bulldogcakes on 10-5-06 @ 6:54 PM

Verlander struck out A-Rod twice on two very nasty pitches. And he struck out against Zumaya who made the entire heart of the order look silly. I only defend him because he was only one of many in this lineup who sucked today. Only Damon had a hit with runners in scoring position. Jeter left as many on base as A-Rod today, Cano twice as many. They ran into great pitching today, that's the long and short of it.

The seventh inning was hilarity. Sheffield lines out on the first pitch. Crowd reaction: nothing. What has he done for the Yanks in the postseason over his career? nothing. Giambi strikes out. Crowd reaction: nothing. What has he done for the Yanks in his postseason career? little. A-Rod strikes out. Crowd reaction: boos of course. What is the huge fucking difference between these three? Sheffield has been even worse in the playoffs since he got here and he gets no crap.

But today was just like any day. When the yanks win everyone looks to Jeter. When they lose everyone looks to A-Rod. Today was a team loss. Despite all the bad hitting they handed a 3-1 lead to Mussina that he couldn't hold. Again, a lot of guilty parties today.

Bulldogcakes
10-05-2006, 03:25 PM

No doubt, H. Cano was lousy today also. But Giambi has had some big HR's (just yesterday, Pedro gm 7) and Sheffield was very clutch his first year w/the Yanks. So they both got the fans off their backs at some point. A-Rod hasn't, its been 3 years, and nobody ever called Sheff or Giambi "the best player in baseball". The fucking guy's a head case, its become increasingly apparent. Playing for the Yanks in NY is a high pressure job. Some guys embrace it, some deal with it, and others get destroyed by it. We've seen him go into a SCARY collapse this year both defensively and at the plate. He has this potseason (which isn't over yet) to redeem himself. If he doesn't, he falls into the "couldn't handle NY" category and its best for all parties he go somewhere less intense. Like either team from LA.

As much trouble as the Yanks have w/the LAA, sending A-Rod there doesn't scare me at all. That says alot.

Rodriguez this season, he stands on the doorstep of a postseason that
represents nothing short of a crossroads in his Yankee career.

Deliver in a big way and from now on he gets treated more like Derek
Jeter than Jeff Weaver by the fans who have made such a sport of booing
him this year.

Come up small as he did in his first two Octobers in pinstripes, and at
best it dooms A-Rod to even shabbier treatment at Yankee Stadium. At
worst it convinces the Yankees to make the best of a bad situation and
trade him.

If he does flop, and the Yankees get knocked out of the playoffs
without reaching the World Series, it's hard to believe GM Brian
Cashman won't conclude that a trade would be best for both the ballclub
and A-Rod.

Meanwhile, the Angels would love to make a deal for A-Rod. Owner Arte
Moreno already has made a public apology of sorts to fans for not
acquiring a slugger to pair with Vladimir Guerrero this season, and has
promised to make up for it.

Other teams would have interest as well, since the Yankees are paying
A-Rod $16 million a year, and not $25 million, after the Rangers agreed
to eat the difference so they could get out from under his infamous
$252 million contract.

One National League GM says there is some buzz among baseball executives already about the possibility of A-Rod being available.

"Everyone is aware of what a circus it was in New York with him this
year," the GM said. "That's why there will be so much pressure on him
in the postseason. If he's not going to come up big for them when it
counts, why do they need him? And if Brian can trade him for pitching,
they'd probably be a stronger team."

That's why the Angels would be an obvious fit. At the trading deadline
they tried to acquire Miguel Tejada from the Orioles, offering pitcher
Ervin Santana and top shortstop prospect Erick Aybar.

Santana, a 23-year old righthander who went 16-8 with a 4.28 ERA this
season, would give the Yankees the kind of young arm they need as Randy
Johnson and Mike Mussina deal with age issues.

Indeed, if highly touted pitching prospect Philip Hughes fulfills the
Yankees' expectations, the trio of Chien-Ming Wang, Santana, and Hughes
could make for a formidable Big Three in the coming years.

Who needs Playboy magazine when you have this?

I wasn't saying that's why they lost, I was merely echoing the words of Johnny Damon, Mike Mussina, Mike Francesa, and Chris Russo (who absolutely hates the Yankees).

I'm willing to take the words of 2 players and 2 radio show hosts with at least SOME validity. And the thing was, of course there were shadows for the Tigers too, but they were facing a "finesse" pitcher, as they say. The Yankees were facing 103 MPH fast balls, which are nothing short of impossible to pick up in those conditions. I'm not making excuses... the Yankees lost, fair and square. But I have an ill feeling the Yankees would be up 2-0 right now if they played last night.

If it had actually rained, I wouldn't even be mentioning it. My gripe is with the fact that it didn't even rain more than a fucking light drizzle. This is the playoffs. The game could've been played.

I would also just like to show how much of a kindergarten game of Telephone was played with my words here. It's pretty amazing. Let's go back to the original quote:

"Shadows don't exist when you play at night [FACT]... which is when this game should've been played.[FACT]"

By the end of the clusterfuck of misinterpretation and twisting of words, it was concluded that I said, "Shadows didn't exist for the Tigers" and "The Yankees lost because of the shadows."

Fantastic.

Before Zumaya, Verlander was throwing 101, so they were facing blazing pitches all day. Todd Jones was the slowest pitcher they saw, and at that point, dialing down is real tough.

Again, we blew a lot of chances and lost fair and square. But I have a sickening feeling in my gut that if we played last night, with the momentum still flowing from the previous night, we we'd be going for the sweep tomorrow.
