I've been looking around for a decent inexpensive mountain bike for around $300. I just want something to tool around town with, and the occasional dirt path. I have done some research online and came up with the Trek 3700 for $289. Any suggestions? Thanks.

It's been a long time since I sold bikes, but for what you want to do, you probably can't go wrong with a $300 Trek. Once you decide on a price range, most bikes in that range are pretty much the same.]

PS... Get a gel seat and some good gloves, and ALWAYS wear a helmet. It's OK. Helmets look cool these days. Not like my old Bell from the early 80's.

Just a thought. If riding on pavement for the most part you might want to throw some slicks with kevlar belts on whatever you purchase or at least some belted cross tires. I rode a bicycle exclusively for four years (recently bought a YAMAHA FZ-1 though).

But if I were still riding a bike solely, I'd get some slicks or cross tires with kevlar belts and maybe throw some slime-tubes in there too. Knobby tires aren't worth a shit on pavement and flats suck. I ran kevlar belted tires with slime tubes and didn't have a flat in 4 years. Before that? With regular tires and tubes I couldn't even go 2 weeks without a puncture. Put any extra $ in the tires and tubes. It's money well spent.

Update. I just bought a Trek 4300. I paid $340 with tax. It rides like a dream. Now I have to get off my lazy ass and use it.

Ah!
I was going to say you might want to look into rental places to see if they're
selling off their rentals at the end of the summer season. Last year my ex
picked up a FS Warp DS-2 (the old version with disc brakes - they don't
come standard anymore) for <$300. It had been rented for one summer
from a place in Montauk, and was pretty much used by folks biking along
the road there. Why they'd rent a FS bike for that beats me, but it was in
perfect shape, they tuned it up and everything, and it was an all around
great deal.
But enjoy your bike - make sure you use it!
