usally if the hsot is bad the cast works harder to fix it but the
sometimes problem is the host and lorn get final say on sketches so if
the guest host thinks they are so grat they pick dumb sketches last
time dane cook was on they wasted a half hour wiht his aweful stand up
if they do that again ill be mad but really im goign to record it and
watch it later so then i can jsut skip anything lame he does in a
monoloug </p><p>im sure it will invole herking and jerking like a kid who has to go pee in the mall</p><p> last season was great </p>

Tina Fey was a fantastic head writer for her first 2-3 seasons, but like SNL does with every group of writers they have they clung onto her and her group far past their prime. The show definitely has that comeback feel like it did when the last really funny cast starting showing up at the end of the 90's: at least 4 or 5 really hysterical sketches a show and a decent number of show players who are almost always funny no matter what. Having Dane Cook host again, however, is NOT a step in the right direction. The guy can be a funny comedian, but he's shown zilch that he can be a funny actor.

<p>SNL has been a punching bag for so long that I think people bash it without even watching it. </p><p>Obviously, I'm a huge fan of the show but, I submit that the Julia Louis Dreyfus episode was the best episode in the history of the show. Every single skit was a winner. <a href="http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/episodes/Show_1449.shtml">http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/episodes/Show_1449.shtml</a></p><p> </p><p>I always ask this whenever people say "the show hasn't been funny since the it's 5th season". Do you think those episodes hold up? Are they <em>still</em> funny?? Sure...it was exciting and new at the time but, does anyone really still ENJOY them when they re-run them? "Jane, you ignorant slut". Is that really THAT much funnier than what's happening now? </p><p>I think the memories of those first few years have been <em>heavily</em> romanticized.</p>

The best part of last year was the addition of the 3 new kids from LA that were hired without an audition, they are still in the cast. I suspect a change of pace that will include more filmed skits than live skits.

<p>I'm actually a little mad. I've been a fan of the show since the very beginning. Lorne decided to cut the cast instead of airing fewer episodes due to budget problems. Looks like a big mistake so far. Tina Fey was replaced by 3 co-head writers, and judging by tonights 'Update' they should all be fired . I know the show has it's good and bad year cycles, but it's just been too damn long since they've had a decent season. Just my opinion.</p>

<p>The first New York City Stories w/ Martin Scorsese and Rosie Perez was alright at least (I like Fred Armisen a lot -- something David Byrne-y about him and that's good stuff in my book). Had high hopes when I saw the one with Lou Reed and Patti Smith, but it stunk as did the final one.<br /></p><p>The Nancy Grace piece was good in spots (and coincidentally Studio 60 did a Nancy Grace bit tonight). </p><p>Female reporter hitting on Jamie Pressly had a couple of good moments -- I think the girl that plays the reporter is going to be really good eventually (or she'll wash out like Cheri Oteri).<br /></p><p>The news was replete with stinkiosity -- with the notable exception of the Peter O'Toole piece. That was <em>outstanding</em> -- good impression, good writing, but <em>the point</em> of it was <em>beautiful</em>. It's become de rigueur for celebs/people of note to enter rehab and blame substance abuse as the root cause of their issues... To essentially hide from whatever they've done wrong. <em>It don't make you a bad person. </em>Booze didn't make Foley perv on pages & Booze didn't make Mel an anti-semite. Cool to see SNL take a poke at that nonsense. Harkens back to when the show tried to be iconoclastic. It would make some sort of odd sense for that clip to be played on R&F.</p><p>EDIT - <a target="_blank" href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=jQSTDQ9ggRQ">here's the youtube</a><a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=jQSTDQ9ggRQ" target="_blank"> of the O'Toole bit</a> -- get past the bad opening. </p><p>I like the guy that did the Peter O'Toole impression. He does really well with offbeat impressions. He did a killer / odd Vincent Price last year.</p><p>I didn't like Corinne Bailey Rae's songs, but I loved her voice & watching her perform. </p><p>"I peed in the cider." Nice!<br /></p><p>Yep, I realize that the show was on the 7th... I tivo'ed it. Fuck. Oh, and I also laughed near the beginning of the Jon Bovi sketch "Cuz I'm an indian / Unwanted / Alive and dead". I feel shame.<br /></p>

Did anyone see the Best of SNL form the 90's last night?
What a piece of shit awful show. It had one or two funny moments because they only showed one or two parts of a skit. Didn't even show the whole skits. And when they did show them, most of them had people talking over them. Awful.
The show really wasn't supposed to a "best of" for the 1990's. It was more of a behind the scenes, informational show about Saturday Night Live in the 1990's. They used skits to put things in context, not to make people laugh.

You just summed up about 85% of everything that show has ever produced.

It definitely had its moments but, I kinda thought (hoped) that this episode would be spectacular. Even though the writers weren't WORKING, you would think that they'd be stockpiling ideas and stuff so that when they eventually DID return to work, they'd come out swingin'.
That wasn't the case.
The show was okay. Not even "better than average", really.

My thought's exactly. The average post here exceeded the creativity and originality of that forced sketch. I quit after that and changed the channel to porn.
The biggest issue I have with SNL these days is why does every single sketch have to be so topical? I know that's SNL's trademark but every single sketch has to be ripped from the headlines? What's wrong with some left field shit like massive headwound harry or sprockets?
And enough with the playonwords sketches. Humor for librarians. Fucking puke on someone already. Oh wait they did... the Amy fart sketch, they couldn't even pull that off. awfull.

.
As much as I loooove SNL, I'm inclined to agree with ya.
The Chris Matthews & CNN & Debate sketches almost NEVER get huge laughs and they almost ALWAYS open the show. I never understood that.
Last year ( I forget the host) they opened with a White House sketch that sank like a tank... then they said "Live From New York..." did the opening credits, and came back with "The Douchebag Award Show" sketch that absolutely KILLED! It was brilliant. The audience was dead silent during the opener and then absolutely ROLLING a few mins later.
Lorne (or for that matter Beth McCarthy) really should listen to their audience. Open with the pop culture stuff. Or the character stuff. And... IF THERE'S TIME.... maaaybe then you can shoehorn in a CSPAN sketch.
The biggest things to pop from that show is the goofy stuff. "MATT FOLEY", GILDA, COWBELL, WAYNES WORLD, DICK IN A BOX, CONEHEADS, CHEERLEADERS, etc etc.
I don't think anybody has ever said "boy... I can't wait to see which senator they lampoon this week!"

In the past I've posted the same thing about the first show in the fall. They've had all summer to make notes, come up with ideas, skits and premises. The first few shows of the year should be the best. Instead it seems like they threw it all together in 4 days.

The show has lost some momentum these last few weeks. I can't really figure out why. And... even though it's my favorite show of all time, I won't blindly defend it. Something's definitely wrong with these most recent episodes.
Having said that... I liked a sketch or two. The "cougar" episode with the chicks at the bar was funny. It definitely should not have been buried at the tail end. Same goes for the Penolope sketch. The audience really seems to dig that character and, once again, it got buried.
Whoever assigns the time slots on SNL really needs to be shitcanned.

This week was a bit of a misfire. It wasn't a BAD episode but... they completely overused Walken.
I know that many people enjoy his cadence and how awkward he is. I'm not one of those people. The gimmick having Walken on SNL is that he's "terrible". He even kinda pokes fun at it himself on the SNL25 special that aired back in the 1990ies.
I guess he's fairly amusing but, if you don't think he's HILARIOUS, then... well... you're doomed to dislike the entire show because he's in EVERY SINGLE SKETCH. Having said that, the monologue was pure gold. Loved it.
For my money, it would've been a lot more enjoyable to watch him do parodies of his movie characters and then maybe let the cast do the heavy lifting.
PANIC wasn't bad at all. I never saw them before.

Lorne actually gets a lot of love from the cast.
If you're interested, check out a book called LIVE FROM NEW YORK by Tom Shayles. It contains interviews with just about everyone who's ever been involved with the show. In it; several people state that "without Lorne, there is no show" and other similar sentiments.
Two years ago, NBC aired a primetime special called SNL IN THE 1990ies and several cast members expressed their own "the show ain't the show without Lorne" thoughts.
Lorne briefly left the show for a few years (in the 80ies) and it was a complete disaster. Nobody wants that history to repeat itself.
I don't think he's goin' anywhere until he has a health issue.

It would've been funny if they brought Mohr in off the bench but, he DIDN'T do his Walken impression. Like...he was just the bartender at the place where the Walkens were reuniting or something. 12% of the audience would think that was hilarious.

I don't think Michaels has any intention of going anywhere either.
I've read two books on SNL, Saturday Night: A Background History of Saturday Night Live by Doug Hill and Gasping for Airtime: Two Years in the Trenches of Saturday Night Live by Jay Mohr.
The Hill book goes into great detail, almost a day to day re-telling of the pre-SNL days up to Michaels leaving, the whole Jean Doumanian fiasco, the Dick Ebersol years and Michael's return. A good book to read if you're a fan of the show. Michaels was very hands on in the beginning but he became distracted. Since he came back he's basically run the show on autopilot. He does the same thing with Late Night and 30 Rock but Conan O'Brien and Tina Fey are really running those shows.
Mohr's book really shows how SNL is produced. He has a great line about the place is still run like in the 70's when everyone was high on coke. People come in late, nothing really gets started until later in the week, cliques, in fighting, people set up against each other and Michaels is above it all because he can't or won't make a decision until the last possible moment. I worked in a company like that once, it was a disaster. It's a management, not a talent, problem.
Like war stories, in interviews most of the people who've worked there say pretty much the same thing, they're proud of their time there but they don't want to go through it again.
Maybe it's just me but too often the show seems lazy with a "let's just get through this" attitude. That comes from the top.

Wow.
I shocked that Wigg isn't gettin' more love. I think she's versatile (unlike say... Cheri Oteri) and she doesn't have a "gimmick" (like say... Dratch). She's just dependable funny. If she stays with the show, she could easily assume the role that Phil Hartman filled: a funny ACTOR that'll do anything.... including playin' it straight.
Oh well. To each their own.

Any predictions/hopes for next year? I think it's time for Darrell Hammond to move on, he's getting too old and they've hardly used him since they came back from the strike. Also, I like Seth Myers but they need to take Amy Poehler off the news (since she's pregnant, now is as good a time as any).

None of it held up (except maybe the wolverine bit). Amazing they were allowed to do a second show. Seeing Andy Kaufman again was great and I forgot how funny Albert Brooks' films were. I didn't even mind the Muppets too much.
Am I nuts or does anyone else remember that Carlin came on just before the show originally ran and did a quick intro about what people were about to see and how it would different from anything they'd ever seen on network TV? I remember the screen being dark and he stepped into a spotlight and started his rap. Then the wolverine sketch and the rest is history.

For my money, Wiig is in her own league. She's the female Will Ferrell. She supports when she needs to support and she takes center stage when it's her time to do so.
I give her a 10 outta 10.
I do, however, think she's getting overexposed. She popped all last season, and she was in a few movies too. She even gets some screen time in "Dick In A Box" and other shorts. If I were her.... I'd dial it down a bit. Leave the audience wanting more.

The Stuart Smalley sketch was hysterical. Jordan's episode wisely didn't use him all that much, but when they did it killed.
Does the Rock count? He did a good job.
Did Jeter host? Or was he just a guest start in a couple sketches? The Yankees' wives sketch and his bit on Weekend Update ruled. "He looks like if the Rock and a Muppet had sex" from the former will live on awesomely forever.
Peyton Manning's episode was one of the few good ones in recent years.
