ALL of Kristin's characters are Gilly.

And yes, I was elated!

Fuckin' great episode.
This show is so much better than people give it credit for. Fuck the too-cool-for-schoolers.

COMING UP (after the Poehler re-run)
EMMA STONE
and KINGS OF LEON.

She's beyond hot AND she's a good little actress. Plus... they have two weeks to prepare. I think it'll be a strong episode. We can definitely expect a Lindsay Lohan sketch.

I enjoyed the New Boyfriend Talk Show and the Denzel character. That guy does a spot on Barack, but for whatever reason, they kept the puerto-rican dude as the SNL Barack guy.

I've always wished that Jane Lynch would join the cast of SNL. Obviously.. she's too big a star nowadays but, back when she was making the Christopher Guest movies and doing supporting roles in various comedies... I thought she'd be a great fit for the cast.

She could fill the slot that Phil Hartman left behind (in terms of acting chops, sincerity, versatility & timing, etc).

I love Wiig. LOVE!
But even I must admit that they've overused her. It's become too much of a good thing. I love her though.

She was great in a movie called THE BROTHERS SOLOMON (with Will Forte and Will Arnett). The movie was goofy but she was very sincere and sweet. She has potential to make the crossover into dramatic acting, the way Jim Carrey did.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. Kristen Wiig can be good. She is brilliant in her more subtle roles - the Christine O'Donnell thing was good. But when she does her weird over-the-top characters like Gilly, it's just plain annoying. Maybe it works in person, or in a small theater setting like Second City, but it does not work on TV week in, week out, it rapidly grows to be a nuisance. There are times a sketch starts and the setup is going on, you're intrigued, then a Wiig character appears and starts doing her thing, then once you've seen 5 seconds of her, you know what the next 4 minutes of the sketch are going to be, there is no creativity there.

She is obviously a talented actress, but the writers are simply giving her the wrong roles. Or, who knows, maybe she really loves that side of her, and she blows the writers to make them write more of that shit.

Wow. I am a day or two behind on Audible, and I was pleasantly surprised to hear Ron echo my statements about how good SNL has been AND that that Jane Lynch would be an asset as a full time cast member.
I've never heard him say anything positive about my favorite show.

Martin Short should get a Lifetime Achievement Award for doing so many humorless things with the financial backing of so many people. I assume he has Imminent Death Syndrome.

There is a lot going on the bit that surprised me:
1) Jim Belushi is actually doing something funny. Though I have heard that Jim was as big a douchebag to woman as his more talented brother, so he may have not been acting.

2) Mary Gross is an underrated SNL cast member. She has really good timing and a good stage voice.

3) The guy from Spinal Tap just never clicked in the show. He had that amazing Synchronized Swimming bit with Short, but just seemed not to fit on the show.

4) Billy Crystal was pretty good on the show, but spent most of his tenure phoning it in. The bit he used to do with the Spinal Tap guy where he talked about hating when he inflicted harm on himself was lame.

The amount of self-laughing that took place that season would make you think there was a ton of funny on 30 Rock, but unfortunately, it just wasn't.

I like when they have writers sitting in the audience and then "spontaneously" just stand up and start asking the host questions and then doing little jokes based on the answer. If you're hosting and the writers feel they have to resort to this little ploy then you can be sure you probably have no business hosting.

I haven't seen this mentioned elsewhere but at the end of the show, during the good-byes, Zack said he was sorry they weren't able to do the Mr. T sketch. He had the Mr. T mohawk but that wasn't a bald cap/wig he had on. I think he had actually shaved his head for that, like he shaved his beard last time he hosted.

Despite Lohan's complete lack of comedic timing and overall shittiness I thought last nights episode was pretty funny. The delinquent girls dancing in the street made me laugh harder than anything Ive seen on the show in a while. And Bill Hader's impression of James Carville is great every time. Jack White slayed.

I just cant believe there are still some people who talk about how "talented" Lohan was or is or could be. She was a child star and has sucked at everything she has done since. Even posing for playboy. I really dont think drugs/alcohol/partying ruined her career as much as her shitty acting. She just sucks. He still managed to make Lohan look worse than she did on her own. I didnt laugh much at his episode but at least he had lines and he did carry a few sketches by himself. He attempted to perform. And I kind of liked the Coolio outro. I totally forgot that song existed.

Also, I realize it must be thrilling to be nominated for an oscar but its seriously time for him to move on already. He didnt win. He had no chance of winning. Hes gotta stop harping on it.

I truly hate it when they do those absurdist, non-sensical sketches. Sketches that were written as a result of smoking a ton of weed. This last episode offered almost no real comedy. No humor. It was a string of bizarre, unfocused, unfunniness.

Next week looks like a doozy. I hope Mick does his Keef impression. "Ya gotta sit and go where the goins been....man."

Seth Meyers is the worst at doing the news. WU suffers because of his delivery. He doesn't do it like a real newscast, which is how it should be done. (Norm, Miller, Fey)
Instead... he delivers the whole thing as a joke that he, and only he, thinks is funny. He is smiling the instant the mics turn on. He's Zito!

I've heard a lot of people make the case that Norm treated WU like an actual news broadcast. I love Norm and I loved him as the anchor, but he treated that like Norm having a one-sided conversation with the audience. It was his standup act; deadpanning, awkward pauses, etc. I think Colin Quinn doesn't get enough credit for his time behind the desk. Yeah he flubbed some stuff, but the content was great. That's what you get for not giving a care.

Respectfully...
I could not disagree more.
Colin Quinn was arguably the WORST cast member to do the news. He would react to the audiences reactions (or lack thereof) after every single joke. I never understood why he chose to go that route. He's make a joke, and the audience would laugh... and he would laugh. Or he'd make a joke... and it would bomb, and he'd look at the studio audience and say "really?" Or he'd make a joke... and the crowd would boo or gasp, and he'd go "oh come on." etc etc
His Weekend Updates had no flow.

I think his jokes were funnier than he was. I suppose there's a compliment in there somewhere.

I really loved this episode. The opening with John Hamm was hilarious... and I just can't hate that guy. He's too good looking and all the women love him... but damn is he hilarious. "SHUT UP MAAAA!!!!"

Mick was excellent. I thought the Karaoke sketch was great. He can really roll with being made fun of himself.

The one skit though, that had me howling, was So You Think You Can Dance At An Outdoor Music Festival. The drunk college kid dancing to Dave Matthews was perfect.

Jason was probably the best ACTOR the show has ever had. He never leans on the cue cards. He always focuses on the role.... not on the joke.

Andy brought the right amount of college-boy charm -with just a light dusting of retard- to the show. He was goofy and clever. Digital shorts really did breathe new life into SNL. He made SNL go viral.

This was a good cast, man.
People love to bag on SNL because they don't understand what the show is trying to do, and who they're doing it for. There's gold in every episode of SNL. You just have to actually WATCH the show. Not "that show hasn't been funny in 20 years, I watched the first 10 minutes and I had to fucking change the channel."

Yeah, i don't buy the Wiig is amazing line of bullshit. She had her moments, for sure, but so many of her characters were just variations of the same wacky, slightly-off persona. It wouldn't be so noticeable if they didn't pile up these same skits week after week. This last one wasn't as bad as they needed to work Mick in more than most guest hosts, but the Lawrence Welk and Word Guess (or whatever it's called) has never worked for me. At least they didn't do the godawful Target cashier, or the Weekend Update singalong thing with Fred.

Wiig does more than you people realize. She plays the straight-man in a almost uncountable number of sketches. She writes sketches for other cast members. She does impressions. She sings. She learns choreography. She has played against type in -literally- thousands of sketches. She plays the mom... the grandma... the boss... a random member of a crowd... and thousands of others. She is so ubiquitous and so omnipresent... that all y'all don't even realize it. You've taken it for granted.
This isn't my opinion here. These are facts.
She's put in an unfathomable amount of effort. She finds her way into 90 percent of every episode.

Lorne himself called her "one of the three best performers in the history of the show."

Now... y'all might be SICK of a few of her characters. But you're wrong to blame HER for that. "too much of a good thing" can be blamed on the producers.... not the cast.
'I'm sick to death of "Stairway To Heaven". Led Zepplin sucks!"
Nope. Classic rock radio sucks.

Finally.... yet again... Ron is spouting his limited "knowledge" of a situation and presenting it as "facts".
Will Ferrell DID receive a heroic curtain call when he left the show. It was almost like a eulogy. Cast members -one by one- broke the fourth wall, and individually thanked Will personally... straight to camera.

How is what you just typed a response to my post?
I'm confused.
I am saying that IN ADDITION to the many characters that were so good & funny, that the producers over-used them..... after all that.... Wiig STILL found time to appear in sketches as the straight man. Or as simply a crowd member or a customer in a store or whatever. And then... after all that... would still find time to write entire sketches for other members that she wouldn't even appear in. And then write a hit movie. And appear in other movies.
Kattan was a goofy presence on the show who them tried and failed to make movies just like a million others that have come and gone.

Sorry Fezident. I respect Wiig's effort and contributions to the show but she still doesnt make me laugh. Thats all that really matters. If Lorne puts her in the top 3 of all time Id imagine his other two were Phil Hartman and Dana Carvey? Not positive about that but I think I heard it somewhere. Oh... I feel ya. No apology needed.
We all have our opinions, and that one's yours.
Some people think she's funny... some don't. But what is NOT an opinion is that she was a tremedous contributor to the entire show. A creative force.
People tend to focus on what they hate, and they also tend to take the stuff they like for granted.
A lot of people hate "Gilly", but loved "Aunt Linda". They are very vocal about hating one but they never give the other one equal praise.
"Penolope" was another one that people really enjoyed. Then... SNL overused that character and now people "fuckin hate it". Okay.. fine.. but you DID used to like it, right? "Target Lady"... same thing.
And so on.

And then there's all the sketches where she doesn't "just keep making the same faces and noices over and over and over". The sketches where she lets the OTHER cast members get a few laughs. Or when she's just in the background or whatever. I think that all that together is the reason why Lorne (and myself) think of her as one of the greatest of all time. She does it all.
And THEN there's the hundreds of sketches that aren't a recurring character... but still a funny sketch. "Red flaaag", "Disney Housewives", and hundreds of others.
Adam Sandler is also SNL royalty but... certainly not the creative presence that Wiig was. Same goes for, say, Joe Piscapo or whatever.
People really do love to say how great that original cast was. They burned bright. They set the stage. They woke us up. But they weren't consistenly able to bring what Wiig (and... in my opinion, Phil Hartman) brought. Lorne doesn't think so, and neither do I.

I didn't say she sucks or I don't get her. There are some bits that I have enjoyed over the years...and they generally are the few times she strays away from that same character that mars most of her lead spots. I'm also not going to praise her for allowing herself to be girl #3 in a skit that stars another actor. Good for her, I guess, but that won't make me forget how annoyed I was by Target girl.

Cool. Thanks. I knew they had bits, but I didn't know they had the whole show.

I haven't used Hulu since it was new.
I remember hating the interface. Finding, for example, a single sketch from SNL was clunky and difficult.

CK was great.
I will say this though, for 30 years... SNL has been making the same unfunny mistake: the actors in the sketches very often feel the need to use a "funny" voice. This accomplishes nothing. In fact... it has the opposite effect.
An excellent example of this was tonight's Fox & Friends sketch. Louis' FEMA character would have been much much funnier if he'd used his own bassy voice rathe than the nerdy nasally one the writer's chose.
SNL makes this mistake several times in every episode, and it always bothers me.

Watch it until the very end. The very last (I think) skit is really really funny.

There's a longer version of that Lincoln sketch, where he (attempts to) have a quickie with Mary Todd.
I prefer the shorter version but... here ya go...

I'm watching an episode from a few weeks ago on demand (Anne Hathaway Host) and Cecily Strong is quickly becoming my favorite new cast member. She's also very easy on the eyes.

Jamie Foxx... you suck.
You're not funny. You don't have "it".

Lose the swagger.

As soon as I found out he was hosting, I decided not to watch or record it. I get this impression he thinks he's HI-LAR-IOUS all the time. Did the show have anything worth watching on Hulu.com?

You are exactly right. He is SO his own biggest fan. It's distracting, actually.

Additionally... he's actually not really all that good. For example... for all his bravado and swagger... he flubbed a lot of lines. He was very reliant on the cue cards. In one skit, it was important that he not fuck up the lines, as his character was repeatedly supposed to say the line "did I stutter?!" Ummm... yeah asshole... you actually did. Slow your roll, bad boy, kna'mean??

He's the worst.

To answer your question, nah, you can skip this episode. I suppose you could check out the Dermott Mulrooney/Dylan McDermott game show. That was humorous.

Great episode.
The "episode before xmas break" is always killer. Last year... Jimmy Fallon ripped it up. This year Martin Short did too.

The cold open made my eyes tear up a bit.
About 10 seconds in... I realized that those kids weren't there to sing a simple xmas song, but rather... to honor & remember the kids and adults who had just been killed.
Once I made that realization.... sadness hit me like a wave.

That Quentin Tarantino parody with Christoph Waltz as Jesus back-from the-dead-and-looking-for-revenge was pretty good. I'm surprised the Catholic League isn't having a temper tantrum.

I punched out after Weekend Update. Was there anything good at the end?

They get played on WFUV in NY a lot. They are excellent. Their lead singer sounds like Mavis Staples.

Timberlake is SNL royalty.
I've every single scrap of backstage & interview footage related to SNL, and there are many many members of the cast & crew who feel as though Timberlake is an example of how good the show can be. He just gets it. He can act... sing... dance... he hits his marks... he writes... he's self-depricating AND he's got swagger. The writers LOVE writing for him, and the cast loves acting with him.

With praise like that, it's pretty easy to lure back a lot of SNL heavyweights.... many of whom probably don't mind being associated with a hip, young, superstar like Justin.

It was another visit to the "5-Timers Club", a club for people who have hosted the show at least 5 times. This is Timberlake's 5th hosting gig. Most of the extra stars were people like that.

To be honest, it wasn't until I saw Timberlake's SNL appearances that I began to actually respect him. He is always great on that show.

I had 17 SNL shows on DVR and cleared out space down to 8. Made the room for the cosmos series old / new.
