Hammer..... were you in 8G?

Do you know (Harry) my father??! Small world!

Well, it was definitely the drummers fault. He played the wrong backing track. When it started, everyone just looked at each other. Then the producer Beth came over the speaker and yelled 'What the fuck is going on in there?'

A lot of 'oh God's' and 'what the hell's' being thrown around. But as the show went on they started to laugh about it because it wasn't their fault. It was pretty awesome.

fezident, I don't think I recall a Harry. What did he work on? I stayed mostly to the writers side of production. But if he got a script, I probably handed it to him.

Hammer....
At that time, I believe he was in Post Audio in the studio 8G suite.
As you get off the main elevators (not the employee bank of elevators) his studio was off to the left ... just before going down the main/wide SNL corridor.
Think of the side hallway (where they store odd props and wardrobe racks) where the B&W tile floor turns into grey carpet. The door to his suite was kinda right there.

If that's where he was in 04-05, then I definitely was in contact with him. My buddy was in the audio room so I hung in there once Update was done or if there was a rehearsal I wanted to see on Friday or Saturday afternoon. I honestly don't remember by name but I would know if I saw him. I was just a nameless, pitiful intern who tried not to fuck up anything.

And it's great to see another quote of mine make someone's sig. Good to see my gem's go appreciated.

Mojo, GAZ, lleeder, HotTub and yourself are almost always good for a nice out-of-context quoting.

Back on topic, my father has been at NBC for yeeeears. He was the Chief Engineer for Imus back in the wNNNNbc days. Then GE bought in, and he to moved various roles in the audio dept on the TV side of things. Perhaps you know him... he looks exactly like Mr. Kotter.

Sadly... my mom looks NOTHING like Mrs. Kotter. Gross. Somebody please get Dr. Freud on the phone.

Tom Hanks, Norm McDonald, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Paul Rudd, Arty Lange. Not sure if I missed anyone in that sing-along at the end.

Artie Lange looked pretty good (well, for Artie anyway). He's lost weight. I hope this is because he's eating better and not through some chemical help.

Overall, not good. The Keenan stuff (Jean K. Jean/ Grady Wilson) made me laugh but Ive always liked Keenan. Fuck the haters. The Biker Chick sketch was funny too. But anybody else notice the new girl slipped up and said "fuckin" during that sketch? The second digital short was good, but it couldnt possibly make up for the awful first one.

That was the best part of the whole show as far as I am concerned. I loved the "Oh no I am so fricken' fired" look on her face and how they immediately panned to Kristen Wiig. I am also amazed how Kristen held it together and kept from laughing out loud.

Overall a shitty premiere. Also, Digital Shorts without Andy Samberg completely blow.

Every year the first episode is horrible, it always looks like it was thrown together is a few days. Since this is their careers, you would think they would work out some skits, characters and scenarios and have a strong opening show.

That's the thing I don't get about SNL. Instead of working on stuff in advance, they usually throw shit together at the last minute, sometimes rewriting skits an hour before the show. That's just stupid. If the actors are looking at cue cards the entire time, they don't have the capacity to act or project the character beyond some simplistic accents.

Why not say that the guest host gets to appear in half the skits, these will be the ones that have to be thrown together during the week. But the other half, the guests have no say in, and are rehearsed in advance, polished to perfection and memorized. I don't know if that will save the shitty writing that's on the show at the moment, but the 35 year old formula has been broken for about 30 years.

Jay Mohr wrote a very good book about his time at SNL. Check your library or Amazon, it's worth the time. In it he said the writing schedule was still done like in the 70's when everyone was doing drugs and wired.

I liked the russian mail order bride, probably mostly cause Megan played a "Katja". The bit overall was ok but not hilarious.

It either didn't go long enough, or was way too long.

The theory is supposedly that an annoying comedy bit is funny the first 3 minutes, once the audience realizes what the comedian is doing. The crows is angry from minute 3 to 9, but if it gets to minute 9, it turns into another level of hilarious.

That's the thing about SNL. It's annoying bits always run between 4 and 5 minutes. It was too long for the "Oh, how cute, it's annoying" bit, and it never goes to the 9 minute level, because it always has to cram skits in there, so SNL can never do the edgy stuff that has a high chance of bombing, and a tiny chance of being the funniest thing in history.

Oh, and she played a Russian chick, so it was Katya, not Katja :-)

Now THAT was a great book. Loved it.
Except for fucking 8 pages that Mohr recounts, in exacting detail, a wrestling match he and Farely had. Wow, does Jay like wrestling or WHAT?! He threw in so much wrestling jargon that I thought that the publisher crammed a chapter from some other manuscript into a book about a comedian on SNL. Christ almighty that was a boring chapter.

Bud Light Wheat bought a lot of ad time and those dress reheasal clips were brought to use instead of other commercials.

I really liked tonight episode, thought it was pretty solid and even though I like Kristen Wiig a lot it's time to let some of the other women get bigger parts.

Considering how bad most of this season has been, last nights episode was pretty strong. The frankenstein twilight digital short was funny. And Kenan doing "McIntosh" is by far my favorite sketch/character in years. That skit would have been even funnier but they threw Taylor Swift in there which made it slightly uncomfortable. I also love anytime they do The View and Armisen gets to do his Joy Behar impression. Solid C+ show.

This show is the absolute worst it has ever been.

It's the same thing every week.
The skit starts. They establish the joke in the first 10 seconds. A good example is the Kristen Wiig Lesbian news reporter skit. It's starts, and she's clearly attracted to the girl she's interviewing. Then, for the next five minutes, it's the same joke over and over. EVERY skit is the same way. They don't build to a funny ending, or switch it up. It's just the same joke over and over, and it stops being funny around the one minute mark.

It's sucks that they have a really really talented cast, and can't write a sketch for shit. It's insulting to comedy.

A Highly Positive Review from a Test Screening of MACGRUBER (http://www.collider.com/2009/12/08/a-highly-positive-review-from-a-test-screening-of-macgruber/)

After learning that it was going to be a hard-R comedy that played on 80s-action movie tropes, the complete and utter disdain for the film adaptation of the SNL sketch MacGruber has turned into cautious excitement. That cautious excitement has built as a review from a recent test screening says, “MacGruber is the best SNL movie since Wayne’s World in 1992.” The review, posted on The Vertex, provides a plot synopsis that lines up with the one Universal provided back in October:

In the 10 years since his fiancée was killed, special op MacGruber has sworn off a life of fighting crime with his bare hands. But when he learns that his country needs him to find a nuclear warhead that’s been stolen by his sworn enemy, Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer), MacGruber figures he’s the only one tough enough for the job.

In addition to having high praise for Forte, Ryan Phillipe (who plays “Special Agent Piper, a young rookie whose tendency to follow the rules clashes with MacGruber’s no-holds-barred attitude”), and Kristen Wiig (”MacGruber’s new love interest, the impressionable and naďve Vicki St. Elmo’), the reviewer provides some examples of the humor like MacGruber driving everywhere in a red Miata and a joke where Cunth asks his henchmen why they didn’t capture MacGruber and it was because they didn’t think he was a threat because they thought he was retarded. While this was just a test screening and the film has a long way to go to its April 16, 2010 release date, we may have to start accepting that a MacGruber movie may actually be good.

MacGruber was actually pretty damn funny! The screening started 15mins late so Lorne Michaels could get seated. No shit. Lorne fucking Michaels waddled into the AMC 16 at the Garden State Plaza 15 mins late and the movie started. I thought that was pretty crazy, but it was even crazier when I found myself laughing hard at several scenes in this movie. The audience erupted in laughter probably 6-7 times. Big big laughs.

The cut I saw last nite will def need to be rated R but I feel like the audience for the movie will be teenage boys. The movie didnt hold back AT ALL, and they kept coming back to the raunchiest jokes. Almost like what makes SNL bad most times (setting up a premise...then repeating that premise ad nauseum) but MacGruber seems to get it right. They stick with a joke just long enough to get the most out of it, and the jokes keep building on themselves to a point where I was actually surprised a few times that they went that far. Will Forte and Val Kilmer were very good and believable. I forgot how good Val Kilmer could be and it was good seeing him as a bad guy.

I dont want to gush over this movie because there were plenty of times where I rolled my eyes and felt like they went for a cheap joke, but I think MacGruber will be a word of mouth hit. It feels like a big budget action film and its obvious they spent some money on this. Way more than any other SNL movie I can think of right now. I was very surprised.

My only wish was that I was more familiar with the actual show MacGyver. I know he made bombs out of toothpicks or whatever, but I feel like this movie went a little deeper in spoofing the show. I might have enjoyed some of the jokes/imagery more if I had ever actually seen an episode of MacGyver.

I hope they don't tone it down to get a PG-13 rating. One of the things that made late 70's/early 80's comedies great was the gratuitous nudity (Animal House, Porky's, even the original Police Academy, etc.).

I try to give SNL the benefit of the doubt, but that was the weakest episode I've seen in a while.

Was Ashton really trying to do a Mel Gibson impression (during the View sketch)? What the fuck was that?

There was a new SNL last night? I didn't record it because I thought it was preempted for the Olympics.

Who was the host? Was it any good? Wow, I can't believe I just typed that, and I haven't even had anything to drink. I guess I could catch it on line or just wait a few weeks for the inevitable repeat.

Zach Galifianakis hosted the entire show with his usual full beard - then came on for the last sketch with it shaved off - but leaving a moustache - and then returned for the closing group goodnight wearing a fake beard. If you weren't paying attention you completely missed it. Kinda subtle and cool.

I just watched the Hulu highlights this morning and found myself thinking 'this is the strongest cast SNL has had in awhile'. I don't care for the 'Kissing Family' skit but there were some very skits last night.

Soon the tides will shift and saying 'SNL is awful' as a reaction will fade away.

Yeah, saw it, pretty cool.

They should do this more often. I hate it when actors or athletes or musicians without a comedic bone in their body try to do this and fail. They should invite more comedians, and by comedians I means actual comedians, not Dane Cook.

I am not sure how you could not notice, you could see how irritated his skin was from the quick shave during the commercials and then his beard looked like Jack Shephard's beard from that first FlashForward on LOST (It's the best show on TV but they have the worst fake hair ever!) I don't think that last skit was worth shaving the beard (unless it was for a role in a movie or something that he is about to start filming)

I watched it after reading your comment. You're right, an incredible amount of blown lines (even with the way she was staring at those cue-cards). I like how at the closing credits she said "My first Saturday Night Live". I don't think there'll be a second.

Netflix has put the full-season DVD sets of Saturday Night Live out on Instant Streaming, so I watched the very first episode in its entirety, as it originally aired, for the first time ever. It's pretty rough, and it's clear they haven't worked out what the show will be yet, but I think I kind of like the format they used back then better, in a way. For example, here's how the first break went:

--Opening sketch: "The Wolverines" ("I would like"..."I would like"..."to feed your fingertips"..."to feed your fingertips"..."to the wolverines."..."to the wolverines.")

--Opening credits (in which the show's title is given as "NBC's Saturday Night" instead of "Saturday Night Live" because, bizarrely, Howard Cosell had a show called "Saturday Night Live" at the time, and in which the cast is introduced collectively as "The Not Ready for Prime-Time Players" and not individually called out.)

--Monologue by George Carlin

--A commercial parody

--A short sketch with the players

--A song by Billy Preston

--An Andy Kaufmann bit (the "Mighty Mouse" bit)

And then commercial. I kind of think that short, fast-moving format might work better now than the current format of stringing together a bunch of extended sketches that just flog the same tired lines over and over.

Later in the show, George Carlin comes back to do more bits, there's a second musical guest (Janis Ian), and, bizarrely, the Muppets. Yes, the Muppets.

OK, some parts of that first show shouldn't be repeated.

PapaBear

I think I remember hearing about how Carlin did so bad because he was TOTALLY fucked up, and almost couldn't go on.

If they have them all, you should make sure you check out the one with the Band, just before their Last Waltz show. I remember seeing that one live. I think it's also the same episode with one of the Belushi Samaria skits, when he accidentally hit Buck Henry in the head with the sword. Henry had a band-aid on his head for the rest of the show. I think they also did a thing where all of the other players put band-aids on their heads as the show progressed. It may not be the same episode, though. Henry was on quite a few.
