That "J.I.M.P." short was so dead-on. Andy is just so damn good at making those sound authentic.
His "I Ran" short is still my favorite. It doesn't get any love though. It never took the internet by storm the way "Jizz..." will.
The 9 yr old sex expert character (during WU) was strong too.

They write the Digital Shorts... which explains why more often than not, they are the funniest parts of SNL.

Seems like cheating to me. Also, no matter how hard I want to hate Kanye West, his performances are good. I had my finger on the fast forward button through both songs but didnt press it.

My lord, Taylor Swift is amateur-hour.
I'm trying to think.... 25 years ago... who was the equivalent to Taylor Swift. Who was the little kid trying to act like a grown-up and somehow..... selling a ton of records?
Her stage presence is that of a little girl playing with her mommy's clothes and singing into a hairbrush.
Oh well.... the radio landscape has lowered it's standards. I suppose I should just accept it.
The episode itself was funny.
Seth made good on the news.
Whopper Virgins was funny.
The Broadway-actors sketch was solid, timely, and very New Yorky. Loved it.
The Air Traffic Control skit was esoteric and hilarious.
FEZ'SASSISTANT:
Neil Patrick Harris addressed his homosexuality about 90 seconds into the monologue .It was the most hearty, and most genuine laugh in the entire show. How'd you miss that???
And again in a sketch. I don't think he was pretending to be anything he isn't.
Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhall played gay characters. NPH plays a few straight ones.
That's how it works.

That's how it works.
see, i hated the Broadway skit and i had to fastfoward through the air control skit, i couldnt handle it any more
i loved the monologue...loved the digital short...loved will forte's song on weekend update. The frost/nixon skit was good, the "2 first names" was stupid
but i do think Neil Patrick Harris is a really funny guy and i love that he has no problem goofing on doogie houser any chance he gets. i just wish the episode had better material

But, I love that the show is at least TRYING mix it up. THE DAILY SHOW does one thing (and does it well).
SNL spreads it out. I'll never get tired of it.

I am not a fan of her music, well, I don't know much of it, but she also sang at Times Square on New Years and from the video on youtube it appears she actually sang live last night.
I don't always like SNL's musical performances, but I guess they go with artists that are at their top right now and she definitely has come that far.
I purposely stayed away from the show last night so I could keep up my streak of never hearing a Taylor Swift song.

Sweet leaping Jesus that might have been the single worst skit of all time. I've never been angrier at a "comedy" skit. After about 30 seconds of that dreck I really wanted everyone involved in that scene to die a horrible death...except Rosario Dawson, or course, she's purdy! In all seriousness, WOW, almost 6 minutes of the worst ecxuse for comedy I've ever seen.

Weeks later and she still hasn't gotten much major airtime. Most of the times she's on, she seems to be a background character, or one of a very large cast in a sketch. It was pretty funny that the only sketch I saw her in on Saturday she was completly screened most of the time by Keenan in a raccoon costume. She did do a Racheal Maddow skit a few weeks ago where she was featured...She'll get her time eventually. It seems like the writers can only write for one female at a time. She did a bang up Angelina Jolie during Weekend Update last night. It was good.
The episode kinda stunk. The people in the bar for the Super Bowl eating ecstasy kind of made me laugh. The McGruber Pepsi thing confused me more than anything (It was an actual Pepsi commercial, right?).
I love LOVE Kristen Wiig. That being said, they need to quit letting her do the same character with a different name every week. It seems like the same thing time after time. Silly character has to deal with non silly characters.
As for the Steve Martin banjo shit, I could probably start a whole thread about how awful that was. He really has lost a step. His monologue was weak, and I was bothered by all the PP2 trailers.

Wow, what a missed op.
The time was definitely right for an elaborate 30 Rock sketch. Maybe have SNL kinda rip off 30 Rock. Ya know... to flip the logic of TGS being loosely based on SNL.
No Chris Brown jokes, no A-roid, no octomom.
Another missed op.
I have an idea for a sketch that involves the Jonas Bros playing at an old age home, where all the "inmates" are previous members of Menudo, NKOTB, Hanson, J5, etc etc.
I wish I was a writer on this show.
On the plus side:
I was thrilled to see the "First Coughs" sketch. I've been yammering about how coughs = death for years.

I love Macgruber!
I think it's perfectly capturing that AIRPLANE level of spoofery. Also... I like that they add little subplots. Shia Labeof as his gay son who just happened to have some "anal lubricant" when Macgruber need "any petroleum based product" was f'ing hilarious.
Then they did the Pepsi tie-in. Love Macgruber.

As was "Save the funnies". ( a new version of the "Save Broadway" sketch)
As was the "sometimes you have to change your voice depending on who's calling you" sketch.

I don't get the positive reviews for this program. Occasionally I catch them, and I NEVER laugh. Maybe the show was never any good...I don't know. I have some fond memories. I just don't get the praise in this thread. Anytime I see an episode, I check this thread...and to my horror, people find the skits funny. I don't even have high expectations, but the program's existence is the only humorous thing about it. EVERYTHING they do is FORCED and PREDICTABLE. It's depressing.

You make a good point. I really don't know why I put myself through it, but if I'm home on Saturday I'll still watch it. I have fond memories of the watching it as a kid (the Eddie Murphy years) and I still hope against hope that it will be good. I watch it and average about one mild laugh per show (usually the Digital Short).
It's like sketch show masturbation - the second it's over you feel dirty, embarassed and ashamed for having sat through it yet again. Only, unlike masturbation, there's usually no reward at the end. But every once in a while - out of nowhere - they pull one out of their asses and hit one out of the park - like the Julia Louis-Dreyfus show from a couple of years back where every sketch was a winner. That one came out of nowhere.

Was Tom Hanks the first celebrity to play himself in the celebrity jeopardy skit? He was great and it was so sweet to see Norm MacDonald again (and it was so funny how he just showed up out of nowhere)
I think that was Darrel Hammond's last show too from Will bringing him front and center at the end. He started the same year Will Ferrel did and without a doubt has the record for being on the show longer than anyone else (except Don Pardo/Lorne Michaels)

Of course an NBC tour guide isn't going to bring up the faults of her place of employment.
The shittiness of SNL's music setup couldn't have been more apparent with TV on the Radio. They played the same song live on SNL and then a few days later on Colbert's show. The SNL mix was a complete mess compared to what could be heard on TCR.

I'm sure that a sound guy probably told her that...and there may be an element of truth to it. But late night TV shows are historically horribly mixed. Letterman is by far the worst, but SNL is definitely in second place.
I would bet, and I definitely may be wrong, but the problems could cease if these shows allowed the band's sound people to handle the mix. I'm sure there's some union rules that allow only show techs to handle the sound.

I would bet, and I definitely may be wrong, but the problems could cease if these shows allowed the band's sound people to handle the mix. I'm sure there's some union rules that allow only show techs to handle the sound.
The guy's name is Speedy Rosenthal and he's been there for ages. I'm talkin' decades.
I make no excuses for him, or SNL just because I'm a fan of the show. I will only say that he's well known, well liked, and well respected.
I know somebody (Tishman Speyer & TOtR are my clients) that could fire off an email to him, and maybe even link this thread to him, and see if he's willing to comment.

I'm not saying he's not good at his job.
But common sense says that a sound man whose fulltime job is to travel with an individual band is going to better understand every major and minor detail of the songs...especially the bigger bands that generally appear on SNL. Rosenthal, on the other hand, has to "endure" the likes of Usher or Beyonce one week and then Kings of Leon or Green Day the next.
I have to say, though, that Green Day's mix was close to perfect. The second guitarist's lead riffs were loud and clear on the left channel, and the quiet-to-loud jump into the chorus was perfect.

I was in the music mixing room when that happened. Might have been the most tense minutes of my life.

I'd love to hear that story.
