I'm a little behind because I'm watching this on a DVR, but Phelps is awful. Did anyone notice that the locker room sketch was recycled from when Peyton Manning was on, except Peyton was much better. Not too enthused about what I've seen so far, but I did think the opening sketch was funny.

Watching it now on Tivo, I'm about 30 minutes behind, some awful rapper is on.
So far not very impressed, and the host, the guy that won the swimming in the Olympics is just awful. I heard Obama was going to be on, but Aint it Cool News said he canceled - dumb on his part if you ask me, when he was on before I thought he did pretty good, it was just a bad part they wrote for him. McCain was fantastic when he hosted a few years ago, especially when he sang the Barbra Streisand songs.

i came home at 12:30 last night to discover my dvr wasn't recording it. Ugggh some kind of conflict or something i guess
I started watching at 12:30. That skit with the fat waiter who kept smelling pepper was one of the worst things ever. It was as bad as a MadTv skit.
Anyway, i found a few skits from last night on nbc.com. The opening with Palin and Hillary was pretty good.
Any new cast member besides the fat "pepper" waiter? Still Poehler and Myers doing the news? Anything else exciting of note? I need to know!

That's the only new addition, although that one chick (Casey something) is still a featured performer). Other than that, not much of note. Michael Phelps may be the dregs of the athletes hosting the show (and that's saying a lot).

Awful. Really.
One of the good things about recording it is you can fast-forward. The bad thing is you can see the whole show in 15 minutes. Even Weekend Update, usually good for a couple of laughs, was dreary. Every other joke/comment was a put-down of Sarah Palin. Nothing about Obama, Biden or even McCain.
As TooLowBrow stated, why are the opening shows always so bad? They have 3-4 months to come up with something. It's like they come in on Monday, catch up with everybody for a couple of days, slap something together by Friday and put it on the air Saturday.

I think it might be a good idea to make SNL just an hour long instead of 90 minutes. That or add a couple of classic skits to each new episode.
Doing so would make the writers and cast compete harder for air time, resulting in a much more entertaining show.

how predictable was the Palin/Fey opening. She's not even a part of the show but they couldn't resist the youtube appeal.

I agree. Maybe it's just me but her mugging for the camera with each character isn't that hilarious.
Also, what's up with Darrell Hammond? He's still in the opening credits but I don't remember seeing him. He wasn't on much last season either. Those Bill Clinton/Al Gore/Jessie Jackson/Sean Connery impressions aren't much in demand; he needs to learn some new ones or move on.

O&A are playin back the SNL opener. I forgot to mention why did they choose Poehler to do Hillary? I can't blame her for not looking anything like Hillary but she doesn't even attempt to sound like Hillary. It's as if she was telling a story and she said you be Palin and imagine I'm Hillary. A stark contrast to the work Fey put in on Palin.
She talked, sounded, and looked like Amy. If they cared about impressions why didn't they just slap a wig on Darrell Hammond.

Bobby Moynihan was good again this week. I liked the "of mice and Men" sketch. And did I catch him on a TV commercial for 1050 ESPN Radio? Asking Michael Kay for his pin# at an ATM. I really dont understand how they pick which sketches go where within the show. It seems like the only stuff I like is the last, or second to last sketch of the night. I guess its seniority.
Last thing, what happened to Kings of Leon? I thought hey were a southern rock band. Their look and sound seemed way different to me.

That clocked in at about 12 minutes, which is really only 10 minutes shy of being the length for a sit-com. If McCain/Palin get in there, maybe Tina Fey should think about taking on a second prime time show, and just do 30 minutes of Sarah Palin being interviewed, debating, lecturing, etc. It would be bold, interesting and mavericky.

I agree, last nights show was very strong compared to other shows this season. Anna Hatheway was great as were the Killers. I haven't been too crazy about the musical guests they've picked lately, but I like the Killers a lot.
One thing that I wish they would do is make sketches that are solid from start to finish. For example, the sketch with the guys and the girls in the club, and the guys trying to pick them up, it was funny at first but then after Bobby Moynihan picked up Anne Hatheway it just fell apart. It just seems like they write to a point and then have no idea how to close it or what to do next. It was good but just fell flat to me.

MARK WAHLBERG wasn't flattered by ANDY SAMBERG's impersonation of him in a recent skit on Saturday Night Live. Samberg imitated Wahlberg in a sketch in which he randomly chats with farm animals; for example, he tells a donkey, "You eat apples, right? I produce Entourage." The real Wahlberg told the New York Post, quote, "Someone showed it to me on YouTube. It wasn't like TINA FEY doing SARAH PALIN, that's for sure. And Saturday Night Live hasn't been funny for a long time. They've asked me to do the show a ton of times." Wahlberg added that he watched SNL in the early 1980s, but is unfamiliar with the current cast -- aside from Samberg, that is.

im glad someone brought this up
Mark Wahlberg has to be one of the least humorous people in the world (he does produce "entourage")
He refuses to talk about being "Marky Mark" and just pouts and looks angry when mentions. Just no sense of humor whatsoever.
He probably doesn't even make fun of that awful Planet of the Apes movie he was in

Even worse than the lip-synchers are those that don't even really contribute to their own songs. A couple of weeks ago Lil Wayne (or was it T.I? Is there a difference) was on, and the backup guy sang the entire song with Lil Wayne doing little more than shouting the catch phrase.

The question of the night has to be whether the Palin appearance will make any difference. Forget about the tv news analysts, as anything she did would result in the same opinion. Republicans will say she nailed it and was perfect, and Democrats will say the opposite. But what about the others? I don't mean just the undecided, but those who are leaning one way or another but don't have a real political affiliation?

I recently re-watched the "Action" series with Jay Mohr. I was surprised to see Will Forte wrote some of those episodes.
I'm also a fan of Bill Hader. Who else is doing a drunken Peter O'Toole impression (that's redundant, isn't it)? He was also good in Super Bad as one of the cops.

As an independent... I was sleeping.
But, I had no interest in seeing a joke trying to be funny.

well Palin didnt do anything funny on SNL. The people around her did stuff but that she wasn't the star. Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey were the funny ones
I would think it would hurt Palin cuz this skit is getting a lot of attention in the media and people will go "She didn't do anything" at it will be seen as overrated

Same here, I recently started watching them again and when I saw his name as writer on the shows I had to check IMDB to make sure it was him, sure enough it was. It just added a new level of respect on top of what I already had for him.
The one segment I wish Will Forte would do again is the Falconer, I love it.
Here's the Falconer - Time Traveler with Kevin Spacey...it is one of my favorites ever.

Also, someone mentioned how all of SNL was taken off YouTube, it was but TONS of stuff is on Hulu.com and also NBC's website. Hulu has it much more organized and intuitive.

This show was absolutely horrible. The previous one (Anne Hathaway) was pretty good (best of the year by far), but this one was complete shit. They led off the show with the sushi/proposal thing? There wasn't a single laugh in that entire skit. The foliage thing was horrible. Bad show.

I always thought that they should've gone so far back in time that ex-members of the SNL cast should've also particpated. It'd be great if they kept it goin' until, say, Dan Aykroyd was in full Falconer gear.

I heard that she had a baby boy so, I'm assuming she's in the hospital or... was the birth of her son just a rumor?
If Amy wasn't there tonight.... who co-anchored the news with Seth?
And how'd the pay tribute to Amy? The only other time I've seen that done was with Will Ferrell. It was quite special.

At the end of Weekend Update, they sang (to the tune of "Cant Take My Eyes Off of You") "We love you Amy".

She wasn't on the show lastnight, Seth said she couldn't be on because she was in the hospital having a baby. It was established in the news hours before the show started that she had a baby boy so I don't know why they didn't just say it.
The tribute was very nice. It was Maya Rudolph and Keenan Thompson singing "Can't take my eyes off of you"

The Joe Biden thing went on about 4 minutes too long.

http://tv.rightcelebrity.com/wp-content/photos/abby_elliott.jpg
As a biography, the young comedic actress is only 21 years old, the daughter of comedic actor Chris Elliott and granddaughter of Bob from the Bob & Ray Show. She currently lives in Los Angeles but claims New York City as her hometown. Her name is sometimes misspelled “Abby Elliot” with one-T instead of two.
Her voice has been heard on King of the Hill as a “hipster girl,” while she has appeared in bit parts on other TV shows. David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, and Jimmy Kimmel have hosted her as a guest.
But like most comedian’s of SNL her start has been on stage. Abby has done improv theater around the country, particularly in the Los Angeles area where she recently performed with “The Midnight Show” in Hollywood.
She is a celebrity impersonator, which is a talent on high premium at Saturday Night Live given Tina Fey’s recent success. Much of Abby’s media work has been developed with the help of her own YouTube channel, which includes video impersonations of Angelina Jolie and Kirsten Dunst.
She can also impersonate hair, as our Abby seems to like flipping from blond to redhead. We like her either way.
Obviously the good people at SNL decided that chicks are good for ratings. Having come to their senses, they hired Abby Elliott along with new cast member Michaela Watkins. Good luck to both of the new funny ladies of Saturday Night Live.
Photos and video follow.

Ones that come to mind are Jay Mohr's Walken and Andy Samberg's Mark Wahlberg. Her impressions really don't have that. In fact, at least two of the three impressions on her audition tape I wouldn't have known who she was imitating if I wasn't told. Also, none of the stuff she was saying seemed all that funny. I guess that's up to the writers to give her stuff to work with though (no idea if she's been hired as a writer as well).
She is cute though.

I don't think there's even a HINT of similarity in her impressions. I don't get.
I usually hate all impressionists but, this chick doesn't appear to be copping the timbre or cadence of anyone she's imitdating.
Her talent remains to be seen but, daaaamn if she ain't fine. If she's at all funny, she follow the Aniston path to Hollywood.

Hopefully she'll be as good as her dad was on SNL...OHHHHH, SORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
Chris Elliot is often a funny motherfucker, but he sucked hard on SNL, and comes across as a complete dick talking about it in Shales' book.

Her Dunst impression reminded me of Andy Samberg's Wahlberg impression in that I didn't realize an impression was possible until I heard it. I thought she nailed it and Joan Cusack. Drew Barrymore is easy.
But her talent isn't about her impressions. That's why they use in their audition reel but she won't be doing a ton of impressions every week. I can see other skills coming through. And she makes me want to visit Bonertown.

dude shes HOT!
the writers can do alot with her. Some skit ideas can be
"My pussy is so wet I have to touch it"
"I need a cock in my mouth"
and the girl who came to casual friday completely naked with her tits out. Thats a card
such great comedic possibilities

Producers probably don't want her impressions all out there for everyone to look at... that way they can be unveiled slowly on the show over a few episodes.

Haven't seen her audition tape posted so here it is. A few more impressions and characters. Love the Joan Cusack.

Yeah, I had the show on in the background and that was the only sketch that made me laugh. Everything else was weak. I actually think they have a strong core of performers, but the writing is just so shitty right now.

Blizzard Man was one of the only watchable parts of Saturdays program.

The skit with Tim McGraw as a redneck in Monte Carlo playing cards in the middle of a James Bond plot was pretty good.
That's about it for me, 4 minutes out of 90...

I totally had no clue what that new investigation show parody was all about until I saw the guy he was pretending to be on Dateline Investigation this morning. Now that I know, I think the skit was a good concept, but like everything else on SNL, it just went on too long. I think a lot of their skit ideas would work a lot better if they did rapid fire 20-30 second clips (Robot Chicken style).

Didn't know where to post thing, but Horatio Sanz is thin. Good to see a weight loss success story from time to time.

I don't think that would work for SNL you have to remember it's Live, so 20-30 seconds would be almost impossible. I don't think the studio would have room for that many sets. Maybe do a tape thing for a couple of minutes like a digital short that might work. The week before was alot better than the McGraw episode.
