So the KISS Army is making a big stink over the fact that KISS has been on the ballot since 1999 and has not been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame yet.

Personally, I see the Rock and Roll HOF to be an utter waste of time, but, I can see their point.

A lot of people will say that KISS' music wasn't "deep", but you know what? AC/DC and ZZ Top is in the Hall. There's no reason why KISS shouldn't be in. For the pure music, the GENERAL style was the same - innuendo about sex, blazing guitar riffs. I'm pretty sure that KISS has also out-sold AC/DC and ZZ Top, but I'm not positive.

(And yes, I know ZZ Top is more blues-based, but I think there can be a lot of parallels drawn between AC/DC and KISS)

The difference is, KISS was an EXPERIENCE. You went to a KISS live show and you were absolutely blown away by the theatrics and everything else.

This isn't the Merchandising and Marketing Hall of Fame, or the Music Snob Hall of Fame. It's the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and I'm pretty sure the quintessential American rock bank of the late 70's was KISS.

I voted "no".

By their own admission, the music was always secondary. To me, that should disqualify them from any and all music based awards/honors. Now, if there was a catagory dedicated to theatrics and stuff, they totally deserve a clean sweep.

To be honest, I guess the whole concept of a Hall of Fame for music is just a bad idea. In music, fame has absolutely nothing to do with quality.

In sports, athletes make it into their respective halls of fame by performing well in what they do. The personal tastes of the fans doesn't really factor in how they get inducted. Music is much different than sports. A musician's success is based more on what the fans like and are willing to pay for.

The Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame really shouldn't exist.

I know that KISS fans are the most loyal in the world so, I expect that THEY would want KISS to be inducted.

But, to the average person on the street, I don't think they equate KISS with music. They think of the make-up, the blood, "that guy with the long tongue", the fire, the costumes, the merch & the marketing, the (ridiculous) Satanic connection, and then maaaybe they think of "Rock And Roll All Night".

As I said earlier, even the band members themselves have stated that the music was an "excuse" to get out there and perform. (or something like that...I'll try to find the exact quote). They sold a squillion records, I gotta hand it to them but, their IMAGE is definitely their legacy.

.

Yes. For better or worse, they helped shape the glam-rock era of the 70s which in turn paved the way for the lame-ass metal bands of the 80s. Their influence in helping to establish a genre of rock earns them admission.

I liked how the KISS Army protested in Cleveland when the selections for induction are done in New York.

And I maintain that Deep Purple needs to be inducted due to their influence upon metal.

Grand Funk Railroad is an American power trio band. Not usually well-received by critics, the original Grand Funk Railroad lineup was highly popular during the 1970s, having sold over 25 million records and selling out arenas world-wide. They were often cited as "the loudest rock and roll band in the world

I can't emphasize the importance of a band like Grand Funk enough. While Zeppelin, Sabbath and Deep Purple were busy churning out some great records during that same period of the late 60's and early 70's, Grand Funk was still the biggest and baddest band at the time. Aside from the Beatles, they were Capitol Records' biggest selling act. They also broke the Beatles' attendance record at Shea Stadium, selling over 50,000 seats for one show, a considerable feat for one band in those days. Songs like "Are You Ready" and "Inside Looking Out" were prime examples of the power and energy of a three-piece that rivaled Cream in pure intensity and musicianship.

Patterned after Cream, but developing their own populist style, in 1970 they had sold more albums than any other American band and had become a major concert attraction. In that same year they had a hit single "Closer To Home," a song that was closer in style to the old Terry Knight and the Pack than it was to GFR. A year later, they went on to break The Beatles' record at Shea Stadium, selling out in just 71 hours. That record still stands today.

ONe of the ways to see if a band is great is if they had a million imitators, and maybe even spawned a category of music in their wake

ACDC is also one of the bands that many Rock/Metal bands trace their roots to. But really they get in for "Back in Black" alone.

Now KISS did inspire a hoard of imitators to launch an entire genre of music. But it was 80's Glam Rock. And most of us still cringe at the thought of it and are still trying to forget it.

KISS belongs in the hall. They had talent musically. Some say Peter Gabriel, Bowie, and Alice Cooper may have done the theatrics first, I think KISS may have beat them to it. Here are some pics of them from 1973 at a little club in Amityville called The Daisy:

http://img118.imageshack.us/img118/6075/acedaisy73at1.jpg http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/810/crissdaisy73kg1.jpg http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/5828/genedaisy73wh4.jpg http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/9139/pauldaisy73rk8.jpg

As you can see they were already in makeup back then. Even though I was only 12 at the time and never saw them I heard stories from my friend's brothers about the goings on at the Daisy. It was quite notorious in our little town. They all said this band was going to be amazing, and it had nothing to do with the makeup. It was all about the music.

See, then you're only looking at the band in hindsight. I was never a big fan, but I knew them musically very early on, and they were far from a Pop band in the 1970's. Pop at the time was the Bay City Rollers and Barry Manilow. You can't lump KISS in with that dreck! They were truly an early version of metal similar to Ted Nugent. I don't think you'd call early Nugent pop music.

Not usually well-received by critics, the original Grand Funk Railroad lineup was highly popular during the 1970s, having sold over 25 million records and selling out arenas world-wide.

FUNK Iwent to see GRAND FUNK RAILROAD at shea stadium in 70, but HUMBLE PIE opend up for them and kicked there ass I NEVER LOOKED BACK Fuck kiss Alice Cooper Wanabees

Anyone got a copy of the list of bands in so far? It'd be cool to argue who deserves in for the future too. Some are no brainers, but others will garner a fight!

Many bands do that. It doesn't change their status as pioneers at the start. KISS and Ted were pioneers in their time. What they did later on should not detract from what they brought to the dance at the beginning. Again, I think we look at this stuff in hindsight and forget what these bands meant to Rock and Roll as innovators some 30-odd years ago.

Blondie does belong in just as The Ramones, Talking Heads and Elvis Costello. They introduced a very new era of music with the punk and new wave scene. You should really compare KISS getting in to The Sex Pistols. The Pistols were a manufactured punk disaster, who were at the forefront of the genre but lasted only a few years. KISS were at the forefront of their respective genre, and lasted far longer than the Pistols, yet the Pistols are in and KISS is not. It's quite rediculous as far as i'm concerned. As I have said, I'm not even a big fan of the band, but given the other acts that have made it, they do belong.

Of course KISS should be in there.
They let anyone in.

Dopey name for the place.
It should be the Music Hall of One-Hit Wonders and Up.

I agree completely with Tenbats, whenever I go to a Kiss show, I dont only go for the music but knowing the fact that I will be blown away at their live show They are the ultimate showmen in my book who have stood the test of time and can still fill up pretty good any indoor/outdoor arena they travel too. Granted they dont sell-out the place like they used too back in the day but they still have very good sized crowds going to their show.
I'm actually shocked that they are not already in, I agree maybe it should be called the Music Snob hall of Fame. To this day theyre are still alot Kiss fans me included that would love nothing more than for them to get the credit they so deserve. Hell, If VanHalen got in they sure as hell need to get in as well. I honestly dont understand the hold up.

KISS WERE THE QUINTESSENTIAL ROCK BAND OF THE '70'S IN MY BOOK without a doubt.

so they'll have to get in
