Its time again for College Football!!
The main stories this offseason have been mainly about players behaving badly...lots of players have been suspended at places like Auburn, The U, and players like Rhett Bomar at Oklahoma and Ramonce Taylor at TX have been t'rown out or transferred
Also, this year IMO is going to be WIDE OPEN....Every team in the top 5 has obvious flaws (Ohio St. is rebuilding their D, The Irish have no D, Oklahoma has no QB, Texas is starting Colt McCoy at QB, Southern Cal lost 90% of its total offense). So its perfectly plausible that a team like West Virginia *shudder* could win the National Title *retches*
I'm excited about my Terps...we WILL go to a bowl this year, there are 3 weenies on our schedule (FIU, William and Mary and Middle Tennesee State) so we really only need to win 3 in the ACC, which we're certainly capable of doing...our defense should be really good, even with losing guys like DQwell Jackson, because most of the secondary comes back and the LB's are still really good (EJ's little brother Erin Henderson, David Holloway, Trey Covington etc.)
Problem is, our QB situation is still a mess (I wish Josh Portis could play, but he has to sit out a year) and we've got no recievers, but really good Backs. So i look for a lot more of what happened last year (at least against good teams) of 10 man fronts
Overall, I'm excited about the season! Its going to be a lot of fun to sit back and watch what happens this year

<a target='blank' href=http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2544174>This I'm not sure I like...</a>
The NCAA rules committee approved eight rules changes in May that will take effect for the 2006 college football season. And while the amendments range from the mundane (shortening halftime) to the marked (instant replay will be used throughout Division I-A for the first time), it's a rule change governing the game clock that has aroused some coaches' ire.
According to Rule 3-2-5, the game clock will start as soon as the ball is kicked in a kickoff situation. Previously, the clock would only start once the receiving team touched the ball. In addition, Rule 3-2-5-e states that, after a team gets a first down, the clock will begin running again on the ready-for-play signal. Previously, the clock did not resume until the team snapped the ball.
While the rationale behind the changes was to shorten the game, that explanation has done little to quell the outrage of some coaches.
"I am appalled at the rule changes," Oregon coach Mike Bellotti told USA Today. "They are major and very severe and will change the game as we know it."
Many coaches believe these changes will eliminate 10 to 15 plays per game.

My point was not to completely denigrate the Irish, but simply to point out that every team in the Top 5 has obvious flaws, and defense is Notre Dame's major flaw...They better hope they outscore everyone
Then again, no one's offense is that high powered to really do that...except for maybe Ohio State, again, a team rebuilding on Defense

<a target='blank' href=http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2544230>This is kinda related to college football...Maurice Clarett in trouble again</a>
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Maurice Clarett was arrested early Wednesday after a highway chase that ended with police using Mace on the former Ohio State running back and finding four loaded guns in his truck, a police spokesman said.
Officers used Mace to subdue Clarett after a stun gun was ineffective because the former Fiesta Bowl star was wearing a bullet-resistant vest, Sgt. Michael Woods said.
"It took several officers to get him handcuffed," Woods said. "Even after he was placed in the paddy wagon, he was still kicking at the doors and being a problem for the officers."
Clarett was taken to police headquarters to be interviewed. Police planned to charge him with carrying concealed weapons and other counts, Woods said.
Clarett made an illegal U-turn on the city's east side and failed to stop when officers, in a cruiser with lights flashing, tried to pull him over, Woods said.

<p>Living in College Station I have to pull for the Aggies. I've been here for a couple of years and haven't had much to get excited about. I don't count the year we got blown out in the Cotton Bowl. Our question marks are QB, he only has one and a half games of experience and our Defense sucked ass last year. Our non-conference schedule is loaded with cupcakes and the Big 12 got a lot easier due to graduation/transfers/leaving for NFL/people thrown off teams. I'm hoping for a mid to high level bowl game, but not expecting a conference championship or anything like that.</p><p> </p><p>I'm originally from Michigan, but hate U of M (fire Carr) and am pretty neutral on Michigan State.</p><p> </p><p>Beat the Hell Out of Everyone!!!</p>

Funny you should bring up the ASU QB, cause Sam Keller just transferred to Nebraska (he lost the spring QB battle)
As far as Va Tech, they've got questions on offense, (no Marcus Vick), but their Defense is probably as good as any in the country, even if they did lose Jimmy Williams
Here's a piece of their Blue Ribbon preview:
So welcome to Beamerball 2006. Gone are Vick and Williams and three All-ACC offensive linemen, including tight end Jeff King; three standout defensive linemen, including All-ACC Darryl Tapp, and steady linebacker James Anderson off the nation's top-ranked defense. All told, six starters on each side of the ball have left vacancies, most of them seniors who were part of an incredible four-year run in which the Hokies won 39 games.
The discussion of the best programs in the country now annually has to include Virginia Tech. And now expectations are part of the deal for the Hokies, who as a team, were disappointed with the way things panned out last season -- two losses in the last five games that cost the team a shot at a national title.
Now the focus turns to a younger team that has some holes to fill and some wounds to heal. The Hokies are counting on some new faces to move in and keep the train running on time.
"I think we can identify exactly what we've got to do to be OK as a football team," said Beamer at the end of spring practice. "And now we've got to get that done this summer. We've got to get us about six, seven offensive linemen and just go like heck. I think we've got some playmakers."
-----------------
The defense will rebuild around inside linebackers Vince Hall and Xavier Adibi, and there is talent up front and in the secondary, though Tapp and Williams will be missed. Tech's front seven has been absolutely smothering the last two seasons, spearheaded by Tapp's tough play at defensive end.
The Hokies rarely had to blitz, because their front four alone brought enough heat. Will that still be true minus three stalwarts?
The bigger questions all loom on offense, where the spring gear was stowed away without any of the three major candidates truly taking over the quarterback spot from Vick.
redshirt sophomore Sean Glennon, who has thrown all of eight passes in varsity action, is the frontrunner, but opportunity is still there for other candidates. Injuries among the tailbacks and on the line derailed the offense for much of the spring, too, adding even more uncertainty.
Add in four new coaches, the biggest turnover on Beamer's staff since 1992, and there seems an awful lot to fret over in football-frenzied Blacksburg -- where the town population doubles for the spring game -- these days.
--------
The Hokies still view themselves as underappreciated underdogs in the blue-blood ACC. The truth is that Virginia Tech is a legitimate powerhouse, a program that reloads, not rebuilds.
If they get good quarterback play -- particularly avoiding mistakes -- the Hokies have the defense and special teams to hang with anyone in the country. Again.
How healthy is Beamerball? Of the 101 players on the spring roster -- and that's a pretty healthy number to start with -- 66 have had a redshirt year to get bigger, stronger and more mature.
Chances are many of the redshirts joining the varsity this fall will make names for themselves, just like a host of Hokie heroes have the last several years. To make sure, Tech has a pretty light nonconference schedule, opening against Northeastern at home on Sept. 2, and also including Cincinnati, Kent State and Southern Miss in Lane Stadium.
The Sept. 9 game at North Carolina could set the tone for the entire season. It's important to have a quarterback in pl

I really hate to see a ref's call make such an impact on a game. Without that helmet to helmet call on GT, they probably win. If you watch the play, the kid hit Quinn as he was ducking down to offset momentum in an effort to get some extra yards. As it turns out, the GT defender couldn't change his tackling angle and had to make sure he tackled him. And for anyone who played football a great tackle is very similar to a wrestling takedown in that you get you weight low and put your head and shoulders through the offensive players numbers. Quinn ducked it and got some helmet in the face. The GT defender wasn't trying to hit him helmet to helmet, it just happened. Mainly due to the actions of Quinn, not the GT player. This lead to another set of downs, and ulitmately a TD that saved the game for ND.

<p>Couple thoughts....</p><p> </p><p>-Anyone still want to doubt Notre Dame?</p><p>-Anyone still want to doubt Troy Smith?</p><p>-Way
too much stock got put into week 1...its WEEK 1 for cryin' out
loud...EVERYONE had a boner over Colt McCoy, and the kid doesn't look
bad, but he carved up NORTH TEXAS. And people tossing Notre Dame
overboard because of the Ga Tech game was premature as well</p><p>-The
ACC stinks. As much as I hate to admit it, the ACC stinks this
year. It will be fun to watch though, because its so wide
open. FSU squeaked by Troy, NC State lost to Akron, Virginia
squeaked by Wyoming, and Va Tech DID NOT impress me AT ALL against UNC
from what I watched. I'm more than enraged that people think my
Terps can't win at least 3 games in this conference. Wake,
Virginia, and NC State are all gimmes for them at this point, combined
with the 3 weenies in the Non Conference schedule, and they will get to
a bowl. I could even see them challenging Miami or Florida State
or even beating one of those teams (they beat a better FSU team 2 years
ago than this one, with a worse Terrapin team)</p><p> </p><p>Next week is the week of weeks...so many great games that day, I can't wait</p><p> </p><p>I'm already fired up for our Thursday game in Morgantown on ESPN </p>

good news is they adjusted pretty well on defense...problem is, it was
28-0 before they could do anything, you just can't get in a hole that
big against a good team and expect to do anything. The strength
of our team is rushing the football, and we had to throw that out
pretty quickly...That Slaton is a heck of a back...And 5 turnovers and
some freaky plays don't help either (Slaton fumbling the ball into the
endzone, the WV KR fumbling the ball, then picking it up and running 90
yards)<br />

like them a little more than West Virginia (Troy Smith's impact and
play reminds me a LOT of Vince Young, although Smith has more weapons
than Young), but they also have to play Iowa in Kinnick Stadium (their
only really tough road game remaining) and they still have to play Michigan (even
though its at home and Lloyd Carr can't beat Jim Tressel, Michigan
looked awfully good against Notre Dame, and Mike Hart is a heck of a
back, plus they're rocking that new zone blocking running scheme
installed by Alex Gibbs himself, the same guy who designed Denver and
Atlanta's running schemes). That Penn State game this week could
be tricky for them too, but i still think they'll win that one.</p><p> </p><p>I
don't think there's any team spectaculary good enough to go
undefeated...If I was going to guess one, I'd go with Auburn, cause
their D is so good and Kenny Irons is REALLY good, but the SEC is the

West Virginia is having all sorts of troubles with East Carolina right now...
14-7 WVU at the half...they're making them throw the ball, and White has 2 INTs (one was on a Hail Mary though, the other one killed a drive inside the 20)

Just a couple thoughts...
I'm REALLY impressed with Mitch Mustain at Arkansas...the kid is still pretty raw, but its obvious he has all the tools to be an awesome QB before he's done there...That throw he made in OT to tie the game was superb. I can see now why the Right Reverend Houston Nutt threw the book at this kid to get him to come there...
I also really like Drew Stanton and Michigan State...they looked really good tonight....theyve got Michigan in Ann Arbor, but they have Ohio State in East Lansing....those are going to be two really good games

even though they lost the sweetest play i saw today was the running back from Wake Forrest tossing a td pass to the quarterback. he threw the ball across the field from near the 30 and hit the qb running to the the back corner of the end zone. a foot either way and it would've been out of bounds or intercepted. the ball had to go well near 50 yards in the air...

<p>Some interesting tidbits from an article on ESPN.com :</p><p>About <strong>Colorado </strong>:</p><p><strong>2</strong>: The Buffs' futility has created one statistical oddity. Brian White, who started the season as Colorado's backup quarterback, left the team just after they fell to I-AA Montana State. White transferred to Portland State, which, because it's a I-AA school, meant he was immediately eligible. </p><p> </p><p>Last weekend, White completed 2-of-7 passes for 34 yards as the Vikings fell to -- you guessed it -- Montana State. Meaning White had managed to lose to the same team twice in the same season with <strong>two</strong> different schools. Those, by the way, two of just three wins for the Bobcats, who are working furiously to facilitate another transfer for White as we speak.</p><p>About <strong>ASU's </strong>coach :</p><p><strong>2-18</strong>: One of the six teams to beat Colorado this season is Arizona State, which plays USC this week. As in, No. 3 USC. That doesn't bode well for the Sun Devils, who are <strong>2-18</strong> against ranked teams under Dirk Koetter. That's an astonishingly bad number when you think of how close they've supposedly been to breaking through. The numbers seem to indicate that they're not close at all.</p>

<p>Still trying to hold a person down. First planting a glove on OJ and now this ?! :</p><p>''We don't condone Lamar's statements,'' CSS general manager <strong>Mark Fuhrman</strong> said. ``He unfortunately got caught in the emotion of it. He blurred the line between what takes place as a participant and your role as a broadcaster.''</p><p>George Teague knew how slow you were then and now :</p><p>His threat to join the fight, Thomas added, was a joke. ''Everybody who knows anything about the Orange Bowl knows it's going to take at least 40 minutes to go down the elevator from the press box,'' he said. ``I'm 36 years old, man -- what am I going to do down there? It was a joke, but people didn't take it that way. That's the way it goes.''</p><p>Its good to see those down years are over when you can take a 14-0 lead, in the 3rd quarter, on a 0-7 team in maybe their 5th year of Division 1 football :</p><p>He even seemed disappointed when the referees finally got control. ''Why don't they just meet outside in the tunnel after the ball game and get it on some more?'' he urged. ``You don't come into the Orange Bowl, baby -- we've had a down couple of years -- but you don't come in here talking trash. . . .</p><p>Whole story :</p><p><a href="http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/15774438.htm" target="_blank">http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/15774438.htm</a></p>

<p>Pretty classy move by the Temple players ( but whats this $ 1,500 per diem business ) ? :</p><p><strong>$1,500</strong>: Temple has shown up a lot in the futility items in this column this year, so it feels good to have something nice to write about the Owls this week. Before their game against Clemson Oct. 12, Temple's players voted unanimously to donate their per diem checks, <strong>$1,500</strong> in all, to the Fahmarr McElrathbey Trust Fund. </p><p> </p><p>Fahmarr is the younger brother of Clemson's Ray-Ray McElrathbey. As you may have heard, Ray-Ray took temporary custody of his 11-year-old brother this summer to get him out of the house of their mother, who is struggling with drug addiction. The NCAA has allowed Ray-Ray to accept donations to a fund for his brother's care. Classy move by Al Golden's kids to make the donation.</p>

<p>Nowadays, with the addition of the 12th game and the unwritten idea that you have to scheulde credible non-conference games, it shouldnt be a problem for a non-traditional power to get to visit an big time school.</p><p>Obviously a big time program isnt going to pass up a home game in their own 96K seat stadium to go play in a competitor's 40K stadium because it's financially silly.</p><p>That said I'm sure 30 years ago, when FSU and Miami, were stepping up their programs they had to visit a lot of places before anybody came to them.</p><p>Its a rite of passage.</p><p>I laugh when people say that ND has a weak schedule every year because they play at the very least 3 Big 10 schools, 1 ACC school, 2 PAC 10 schools and usually one other school from a big conference.</p><p>That said surely they play Navy every year but every school, especially those in conferences, play a " cupcake " or 2 every year.</p><p>When ND schedules the teams from the big conferences those teams are usually pretty good at the time. They cant help it that a team take it in the fart box 3 years after they've been scheduled.</p><p>Look at the SEC teams ND has played in the last 10 years.</p><p>It hasnt been Vandy, Miss St and Kentucky.</p><p>Its been LSU & Tennessee.</p><p>Non-traditional schools have to take their lumps before they're considered strong.</p><p>There's a lot of parity in college football now so big teams cant run from these schools anymore w/ out being noticed.</p>

<p>It's getting ugly here at FSU. Yes, we owe Bobby Bowden a lot. He took the program from nothing to one of the most dominant in the nation. Does that mean we should sit back while the program goes to shit? Of course not. </p><p>I wish it was as simple as firing Jeff Bowden. Granted, that's one of the problems, but they extend way beyond that at this point. The talent is still good, but far from what it used to be. Compare FSU's offense to, say, Clemson. Clemson has better players at almost every spot. The team is poorly coached at many positions, not just offensive coordinator. Players don't get better here, and are often used improperly. Look at Leon Washington with the Jets. He's becoming and amazing RB with a bad team in the NFL. He could have been used so much more here.</p><p>Trust me, the problems are way beyond Jeff Bowden at this point. Bobby should be advised by his BOSSES to make meaningful changes to correct the problems the program is facing. If he accepts the changes, great. If not, he should resign.</p>

No. They would give him a chance to make changes and turn things around, but would not sit by for years while he flushed the company down the shitter.</p><p>Also, they circumvented anti-nepotism laws by allowing Jeff Bowden to be hired as offensive coordinator. State law prevents a family member from having a state job where he reports to another family member. They tailored it so that "officially" the offensive coordinator did not report to the head coach.</p><p>Bowden keeps saying things will turn around, but it won't happen unless serious changes are made. Paterno made changes in order to turn things around, including firing his son. Bowden should be offered the chance to make meaningful changes. If he refuses, he should resign.</p>

<p>It gets REAL interesting if we beat Clemson next week...If we win
out, we become Atlantic Divison champions, then on to either a rematch
with Ga Tech (who we had beaten until an awful awful awful call cost us
the game), or Va Tech (who is really really really down this year) in
the ACC Title game</p><p>As wide open and as wacky as the Atlantic Coast is this year, I have no expectations or predictions for anything.. </p>

<p>That announcer that said the thing was gay is an old LSU player ( his brother played there too back in the early 90s ).</p><p>How the hell did Texas Tech not hold on in that game ?</p><p>They were up 21-0 and 31-21.</p><p>Bastards.</p><p>As far as the Bowden thing goes we've gotta stop saying " they oew it to him ". Thats just in insane business practice and yes this is a business for the school itself and for any players that go there and want to/will play at the next level.</p><p>If Urban Meyer can tell the state's #1 players that the old guy down in Tallahasee has lost it, and they believe him and sign with UF or another school how does that help FSU ?</p><p>As I said they shouldnt railroad the guy out of town but in this day and age of parity if you slip and put yourself in a 5 year recruiting hole its a strong possibility you wont get back to the level you were accustomed to especially not in a state with 2 other huge programs.</p><p>It makes for a nice quaint thought to say you cant fire him but if they wanna be a Top 5 program again they may have to make some changes.</p><p>As far as Mich and OSU rematching after one of them loses that would be terrible.</p><p>I think I heard Todd McShay talking about it the other day. His point was what if Mich wins the regular season game and then OSU wins the bowl game rematch. How can either team say they were better ? Why would OSU be better than Mich if they beat them 6 weeks after they had already lost ?</p><p>Also I know NDs schedule hasnt been the toughest ever but why are we willing to look past Mich's 14 point win against a team that lost in a most terrible fashion to a team which ND beat ?</p><p>And why is UF's win against UGA so big ? Its been shown that UGA is only getting ranked due to their name. I'm normally a pro-SEC guy but I dont see the league being as strong as its been in the past.</p>

Someone gets it. He will not be fired, but if he is unwilling to make changes where they are clearly needed, then he should resign. He painted himself into a corner by circumventing the nepotism laws to hire his unqualified son as offensive coordinator. That is the first of several changes that should be made.</p><p>Think of it as a company (in reality, college football is a big business). Bowden is like the CEO. He performed exceptionally for many years but has had 6 straight subpar years. The board of directors (AD & President of Univ) appreciate his service and ask for certain changes to turn the company around. It is up to him whether to agree to those changes or resign if he cannot accept them.</p>
