I'm a big fan of Murphy's in DC. I know the one in Alexandria is more popular, which is probably why I prefer the one in DC. The food is good, the music is good, and it seems like every third beer gets poured for free.

Madam's Organ is my #2. If you've ever been, you probably know why.

As soon as I saw this thread title I thought of Murphy's in Old Town. I love that bar, and its only 5 minutes from my house. Second would have to be my happy hour spot, Champion Billiards in Shirlington. From the outside, it looks there's a good chance you'll get shot when you get inside, but inside its actually a pretty laid back pool hall.

Although it's more of a restaurant than an actual bar, I enjoy Brother Jimmy's Bait Shack.

Rodeo Bar is also fun.

Mine was the Brown Pelican here in Frederick until the owner didn't pay his
taxes and it closed down last November. It was the last cool "old people's bar" --
small, underground, lots of alcoholic regulars. All the other bars in town are full
of young kids who don't know how to drink and are always puking in the
bathrooms. Cross-eyed chicks with back tattoos and thongs stumbling by with
that sweaty, too-many-shots smell about them.

It actually turned out to be good timing because right after our bar closed I got
pregnant so I can't drink anymore anyway and don't feel like I'm missing
anything. Maybe it was meant to be.

I like Tuesday trivia night at Rocky Sullivan's with Liam - he also does trivia
Wednesday nights at uhmm the place on the corner of 62nd and 1st or
thereabouts - the name slips my mind at the moment. I'm a big fan of
pubquiz nights. The Baggot Inn (which the cash cab guy mentioned as the
place where he got beat up in the bathroom when he was on last week) also
has a good trivia night.

My favorite bar is probably Bacchus in New Paltz. With an excellent beer selection
(and if they don't have it, they'll get it for you), live music, and
excellent fish and chips (I get sweet potato fries!) it is a great place to go
after a long day of climbing. Actually, I think I'll go eat there tonight! I
haven't been there in like a month!

I haven't gone in a couple of months, but last time I was doing trivia
regularly, he was doing Wednesday/Thursday at Baker Street/Rocky
Sullivans... he's quite a clever fellow, really but damn the music rounds
always kill me.

Shit. I'd better get going if I'm going to get to New Paltz today!

http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/4132/snickersxb9.gif

but seriously...

I haven't gone to bars that much over the last 15 years or so, but my all-time favorite was a little bar called the Pastime Pub here in Amityville NY. During the 70's I saw some great bands there for about $6.00. We saw The Ramones, The Good Rats, The Freelance Vandals, Blue Oyster Cult, Twisted Sister, Zebra and many others. The place was so small you could be at the back of the room and still be within an arms length of the performers and it was packed every night there was a show. It closed down about 20 years ago and has changed several times to a different type of club, but none of them last for more than a couple of years.

It's still called that but it has new owners and has turned into a teen hangout too.
They play rap music and have crummy bands now. I loved the old Raw Bar that
had blues bands and buckets of rolling rocks. Frederick bars suck anymore.

Red Rock West on 17th and 10ave. That place is home. St Marks Ale house on St Marks Place and 3rd Ave is my #2 and if Im feeling extra white trashy Doc Hollidays is my #3. If Duffs in Williamsburg ever gets their AC working properly (especially after this week) it will break into the top 3.

In Frederick, there's a great little place called Acacia. It's
quiet and small. More for us older types, but it is right across
the street from the brewery, so you can watch all the drunks try to
walk down the sidewalk! We watched this one guy trip over the
stoop and hit the ground so hard you could feel it. He was
gushing blood from head and hands, and he got up and looked around like
it happened to someone else. Great!
In my neck of the woods the vast majority of the bars all cater to the college crowd (Texas A&M) so you have to go to the dives outside of town. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
