I say that the next time I'm out I'm going to pick up a fly swatter. My mother says not to bother because she has one at home she'll give me. Like I can't shell out 99 cents for a fly swatter. <p>Hey, I remember that store! My brother and I liked to go with my Mom because they even used to sell pets. We would go the the one in Hackensack and the Korvettes in Paramus on Rt. 4. </p><p>That is a real blast from the past!</p>
Hottub
07-31-2006, 01:40 PM
<p>Yup. The Korvettes was on the west bound side of 4. We would go to Newberry's on the east boand side (in the mall) Buy a hottdog and a slurpee. Take the pedestrian bridge over to Korvettes to check out the records, On the way across the bridge, we would suck slurpee into our straws and blow it out over Rt. 4!</p><p>Good times.</p>

When I was a kid I remember some parts of New Jersey had some weird Sunday 'Blue Laws' where you weren't allowed to sell items like clothes on Sunday. Most stores that sold prohibited items simply didn't open on Sundays. But since Two Guys sold everything they were opened but would have whole sections of the store roped off so you couldn't purchase the forbidden fruit. Sometimes specific items within an aisle itself were roped off. As a kid I always thought it was stupid of Two Guys to do that but looking back on it I realize what a stupid law it was.

Oh man! I just had another flashback thinking about this place. I saw my first naked woman thanks to Two Guys. As crazy as it sounds now they used to sell Playboys at the magazine racks up by the registers, right next to the TV Guides and National Enquirers. After several trips, I became so entralled with the pictures on the cover that one time I wandered off while my parents were on line to pay. I walked down to a register down at the other end of the store which was not in use and rifled through a magazine like I was a cold war spy looking at nuclear secrets. I must have been about 8 or 9 and I probably spent a total of fifteen seconds looking at it because I was afraid of getting caught, but they were the best fifteen seconds of my life.

And "play" sneakers. The ones that looked something like Ked's, all thrown together in a wire basket, and paired with cable ties. About 5 bucks.

<p>I used to go to the one in (or near, I was too little to remember) Brick. I remember they had a snack bar there with the most delicious hot dogs...</p><p> </p><p>For some reason my brother in law refers to it as "Two Jews"... Any truth in that?</p><p> </p><p>Also, how about Rickles? Home Depot did them in. I used to go to the on in Jersey City, what a mess! </p>

Maybe Brick, Maybe Lakewood. Can't remember. But is was a good spot to pick up cheap beach supplies while vacationing down the shore.

<p>I love these trips down memory lane. We didn't have a Two Guys here on Long Island that I remember but when I was a wee lad we always went to these larger stores:</p><p>http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/6062/1962wtgrantmv5.jpg</p><p>http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/6714/korvettessg8.jpg</p><p>and</p><p>http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/5514/woolworthnx0.jpg</p><p>And we'd go to a local 5 & 10 in town:</p><p>http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/2824/shl7.jpg</p><p>Once the Sunrise Mall in Massapequa opened in 1973 that's where we would go since it had so many stores and was right around the corner.</p>
<p>I got my first baseball mitt at Two Guys. I think I was about 4 years old. </p><p>I also remember Korvetts and Alexander's (with that crazy modern art mural) in Paramus, NJ. </p><p>The times they are a changin'. </p>

<p>That mural was sold to some museum before they began demolition on the building. For the life of me , I can't remember which one. yes I remember 2 guys. it changed to bradlees, then to an odd lot then something else and now it's a lowes wearhouse home improvement center. Remember paradise east on 440? YES!!! Finally someone other than me remembers Geno's on Westside
across from the Miss America Diner and there used to be a grocery store
too next to the diner. I remember going to Geno's when I was a kid but
no one else remembers Geno's as Geno's. They all remember Kentucky
Fried Chicken. Now it's West Coast video.

The Canton Restaurant on Bergen Avenue, located in the heart of Journal Square, had been a culinary institution since 1930. <br /> <br />
Known for its wooden booths, antique furniture and old world ambience,
Canton, also known as the Canton Tea Garden to many longtime Jersey
City residents, was a throwback to when a dining out experience was a
big deal. The restaurant was to have celebrated its 75th anniversary in
September 2005.<br /> <br />
But that experience is no more, as the front door has been locked for
the last two months. The daughter of the former owner said last week
that the company has gone into bankruptcy. It will not open again
unless it gets new owners. </div>
<strong>The lowdown on Canton</strong><br /><br /><br /><p>
n June, Hackensack-based immigration lawyer Shirley Pang
notified the city's Alcoholic Beverage Control board that the
restaurant was closing. Pang is also the daughter of the late owner of
the Canton, Tommy Tang, and has been speaking on her family's behalf.<br /> <br />
Pang told The Reporter last week that her father, a native of Mainland
China who emigrated from Hong Kong either in the late 1950s or early
1960s, was an employee of Chinese restaurants in New Jersey for many
years until he bought into the partnership that operated Canton, known
as Canton Casino, Inc. In 1985, when he was brought in, he became the
majority partner with three other individuals. "Once you worked in the
restaurant business for many years like my father, the next step was to
move into owning a restaurant as a means for providing an income for
his family," said Pang.<br /> <br /> Pang said that the restaurant was an
all-encompassing endeavor for her father that he took pride in because
of the devoted clientele. But in 2003, according to Pang, Tang's health
started to fail him. In October of that year he passed away at the age
of 64. After his passing, her mother Helen, along with the remaining
partners, continued to operate the restaurant.<br /> <br /> In June of this year, there was considerable leakage from the ceiling, Pang said. <br /> <br />
"During the summer, there was the decision to close the restaurant in
order to do renovations. That's why the sign was put on the door saying
'closed for renovation'," said Pang.<br /> <br /> But according to Pang, her mother and the other partners then determined that the best decision was to sell the restaurant. <br /> <br />
"Once word of mouth spread in the Chinese-American community, there
were a number of people interested in the restaurant," said Pang,
"until they would ask about available parking."<br /> <br /> That
impediment along with evaluating the location turned off those same
interested buyers. By late August, arrangements were made to file for
bankrup
