No doubt it has been discussed on this board before...but never by me! Ha!

When I was a kid, there were three shows that commanded my full attention every week. One was Ren and Stimpy, then the Simpsons and finally Mystery Science Theater 3000. My mom would be cleaning the house, and pause in fornt of the television long enough to catch a few jokes. She would shake her head and say, "No wonder you are so strange..."

I was all of 11 or 12 at the time.

Now I am all growed up, and I have me a fancy girlfriend who could never be mistaken as Nerdy. Last weekend was her birthday, and while we were out at dinner I made some sort of reference to the show and her eyes lit up. Not only was she a fan of the show, she was a devout member of the info club. So we plunked down the fifty bucks and picked up one of the boxed sets. Best. Saturday. Night. Ever.

My point being that I think shows like MST3K are a sort of generational glue, creating a pop-cultural bond that crosses nearly every demographic. Kind of like Simpsons, only more obscure. The show hit so many different notes that there was truly something for everyone inside each episode, and with it all came DEEEEEEP HUUUUURTING!

So ummm, yeah. I lost my point. Sorry to waste your time.

-c.

Best show ever. I wouldn't care if there were a million MST3K threads on the board, but I'm not a mod.

Watching these old episodes is actually kind of startling. There are so many little phrases and quips that have ended up as part of my vocabulary and/or personality.

If I were a richer man who wasn't currently trying to curtail his dvd spending habits, I would own every boxed set. Anyone know if it is carried on Netflix? I am assuming that they are...

I just fuckin LOVE MST3K!!! It really is the best, most well written postmodern show ever on TV!!! It is to TV what Thelonious Monk is to music for me. If that's all there was, I'd be happy as hell!!! & as to the generational glue... My daughter LOVES it too!!!

My personal favorite is when they did The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies. Ray Dennis Steckler is a genius.

Joel bummed cigarettes from me at the old Village Gate on Bleecker Street.

I have a bunch of episodes on tape - love the show - even saw the movie the one week it played at one theatre in DC - need to buy the dvd sets at some point.

That era on cable television is pretty special, when they were all pretty open to programming like "Night Flight" or "You Can't Do That On Television." It's actually amazing MST3K lasted as long as it did. Shows like that still exist, but are sometimes a little tougher to find.

One easy suggestion is a show out of NY called "Ghoul A Go Go." VERY funny and VERY subversive and perfect for the whole family. The Cramps singled them out as a favorite of theirs and recent episodes include the "5-6-7-8s" from Kill Bill performing. You can go to their website for info on episodes - I think several are available on DVD through "Something Weird," and occassionally on the on-Demand service.

No show has ever given me more pain or pleasure. I'm talking about Manos Hand of Fate.

I can't think of any other show that gave me as many belly laughs as MST3K. It may be the most original and hysterical program ever aired.

Now I'm gonna have to go buy a boxed set.

I'm gonna pick the box set up too! I loved this show. My favorite quote that I still
use today is "sink wash your roscoe."

THIS ISLAND EAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTTTTHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
I think the ones that really stood out for me were the one where they watched that freaky Finnish film on Jack Frost, and the one where there were all these giant spiders, and the movie starred Alan "D'oh" Hale of Gilliagans Island, and his very first line of the movie was "Hey, Little Buddy!"

Oh My God. I love watching MST3K anywhere, anytime, with anyone. I remember renting MST3K the movie with my best friend at the time and we watched it every weekend from 6th grade - 8th grade. Then she stole it from the local blockbuster. that bitch.

Anyone remember, one of the movies where a crew member calls out 'watch out for snakes!' for no reason?

I think it was in 'Mitchel' , that and "I accuse my parents' were my favorites.

Also the one of the robot voices guys wrote a book where he watched a movie a day around the world for a day. It was pretty good... i recommend it...a year at the movies is the title
