<p><font face="arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="3">Okay, comic lover fans. Name your favorite comic book story of all time. Is it Watchmen, the likely favorite, or is it another story that grabbed you and held on?</font></p><p><font face="Arial" size="3">Watchmen may be the best story I've ever read, but in going for pure superhero comic book story, my favorite is Daredevil: Born Again.</font></p>

<p>Tough choices - but went with DARK KNIGHT, because it excited me about comics like nothing had before or since and i think it still holds up. Lots of excellent books/stories in this poll, though.</p><p>Another superhero book i'd toss in would be the XMen Graphic Novel (their first?) - "God Loves/Man Kills" which really put them into a new focus and changed what the conventional superhero books could do - honorable mentions (for me) go out to 1980s "Swamp Thing," Iron Man's "Demon in a Bottle," "Ronin," and Miller's "Daredevil."</p>

I put forth my vote for the Shaper of Dreams. While the whole series is brilliant, the one issue that has always resonated with me is The Parliament of Rooks. To the point where my friends in college called ourselves Corvidae and the website I'm working on now is called the Rookery.<br />

One of the recent questions on the questions thread led me to remember one of my favorite single issue comic book stories of all time: "The Nearness of You" in Astro City #1/2. I don't want to spoil the story for anyone, but I think that anyone who has ever loved anyone will appreciate the story.

ive just recently gotten back into comics and haven't read many on this list, so seeing all the recommendations are great.
batman year one is fantastic.
i was completely enthralled by y: the last man. i just finished book 9 and can't fucking wait for the last book to come out. brian k. vaughn is a fantasic writer. so this gets my vote as of now.
what should i start getting into first: watchmen or sandman? cause i have had both in my hand at stores at times.

I voted Watchmen, but this is my real fav:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/32/Killingjoke.JPG
I can't stand Dark Knight Returns. The dialogue is really clumsy and I hate it when they mix Batman up with someone with super powers. I like it when everyone is a human, just some are a little crazier in the head than others. Who needs Superman?! Meh.
Pyongyang (http://www.amazon.com/Pyongyang-Journey-North-Guy-Delisle/dp/1896597890) is my all-time favorite graphic novel, however.

I wnet with the original phoenix story.... fucking amazing even 20 years later
I really loved DKR and it is a close second, I dont think whole series should be up on that list only individual stories/arcs... just my opinion.
Another superhero book i'd toss in would be the XMen Graphic Novel (their first?) - "God Loves/Man Kills" which really put them into a new focus and changed what the conventional superhero books could do
amazing story
The Pro, by Garth Ennis is also really good</p>
So glad I am not the only one who owns this... fucking comedy gold
im going with long halloween. ive read it 30 or 40 times at least. </p>
I loved that book, I also really liked hush too... not the after shit but the original 12 issue arc was very good for a recent batman book
<p>Brian K Vaughn and Jeph Loeb are my top two. </p><p>Also going back to teh Batmna Long Halloween debate. A few said it isn't the best, what would you list as the best? And no DKR that's too easy.</p>
killing joke, arkham asylum , death in the family, year one..... like I said I am a fan of the long halloween and hush but those 4 are better.
some more...
first few preacher trades (lets say first issue till after he kills his grandma) fucking excellent.
I love the first sin city book, 300 is awesome, MARVELS may be the best comic book art EVER!!!
Also how no one brought up ORIGIN (wolverine) is baffling to me... amazing art and a great story.
And you cannot go wrong with Days of future past... still love it all these years later.
i also dug avengers disassembled, really got me to appreciate the avengers after years of hating them

But alot of these are repeated storylines.
Capt.&Gwen Stacy(Spider-Man) - Two big stories there with their deaths, plus all the stories in between and before
Reed trying to make Ben "human" - which time?
Morbius, The Inhumans,Agatha Harkness(FF) - Those are characters, not stories
And the movies are amalgam of modern stories, dark age stories (ok, visuals), silver age stories, etc.

check out death in the family, the killing joke, arkham asylum, mad love, batman: harley quinn (these two are good if you are a harley fan like myself) Face the face is a new story (first trade after crisis) isnt amazing but it is a good detective story.
Also JLA tower of babel is a good batman story.

yea arkham seems to run through the villians.... but watching batman "tripping" out was amazing ,the artwork was phenomenal too (especially how joker was drawn).
Joker was a sadistic fuck too.
Also if you want some older batman stuff check out knightfall 1 - 3 , cataclysm and no mans land 1 - 5 ... these arent amazing stories BUT there is some good stuff in them. A little expensive for just ok, but if your gonna go nuts then these are two LONG arcs.
Also I do not own war games 1 - 3, but I have heard mixed reviews.. I still have to pick them up... black mask is a sick fucking villian.
So thats 11 more trades if you want... the other stuff (previous post) are must haves though

"back in the day"...some 30 + years ago I might have quoted you issue #s I also realize they were characters..they were also story-lines. I thought this thread was for me to voice MY opinions. As far as the repeat aspect,it's nice to know not much has changed in so many years,Thanks for reminding me why I stopped buying them, even though they were only 12,15,25,20 cents respectively.

voted watchmen. i'm not a huge comics guy and have not read any of the others. i'm halfway thru watchmen, so it wins by default. if i'd thought of it i would have voted for other and secret wars. i had all of those in high school and loved it.

Sandman, no question. I would also nominate the Uncle Scrooge/ Donald Duck stories by Carl Barks.

i voted dark knight. i am reading watchmen right now and it's fantastic when i'm finished i would probably reconsider my vote. it will be very interesting to see how they make watchmen into a movie. it seems like they will have to cut a ton out... i'm def looking forward to reading other alan moore stuff. it sounds like what he did with swamp thing is amazing. i never thought i'd want to read swamp thing - not sure why - possibly the bad movie.

A few months ago I read Spiderman: The Other. I thought it was one of the best Spidey stories ever. Maybe its cause I'm ghey for Stracyznsky, but adding a mystical element to spiderman while making it plausible was great. It also opens an entire new range of storylines for them to get into.

I wouldn't hold my breath. The new powers have been mentioned exactly zero times in Amazing Spider-Man since The Other storyline ended.

I have read and reread the Watchmen several times now, but I cant figure one thing:
How does Janey Slater become a crime fighter? She was with Jon when he was turned into Dr Manhattan, and then later on, she is seen as his girlfriend/crime fighter associate. I do not know how she became an adventurer..anyone know?

I don't think she was a crime fighter. She tagged along when Captain Metropolis tried to start The Crime Busters (and got pissed at him for checking out a 16 year old girl) but they were just dating.

So she was just there for no reason? I thought she had a costume..?

To your question? I think she was there just to keep him company. It's been awhile since I read that scene, but I don't think she was in costume, and there may have been some dialogue about Manhattan asking her to come with.
As for the question of the thread, I think I said that my favorite was Daredevil: Born Again. The best story definitely is Watchmen.

I just flipped through my TPB and in that scene she's wearing a blue dress with pearls and is looking kind of Jackie O-ish. I never took it as a costume. Any other time she's seen she's wearing a sweater or a bathrobe. Nothing you'd fight crime wearing. In a quick skim of part 4 where Jon looks back over his life I couldn't find any point where he refers to her as anything other than a girlfriend.
As for why she's at the meeting, I guess it's to set up the fact she's jealous of Laurie. Jon was a God working for the government, so what good would a non-powered sidekick do for him?

I read mine too again and think you are right. I assumed she was part of the group.
voted for dark knight returns, as a story arc it has some great moments, death of the joker, superman/batman going toe to toe
i much prefer the sandman but couldn't pick just one arc, i love the whole series

check out death in the family, the killing joke, arkham asylum, mad love, batman: harley quinn (these two are good if you are a harley fan like myself) Face the face is a new story (first trade after crisis) isnt amazing but it is a good detective story.
Also JLA tower of babel is a good batman story.
You will love hush.... trust me STAY AWAY FROM HUSH RETURNS!!!!! you will thank me
Tower of Babel was great...I think that was Waid. I love him.
The Killing Joke is short but wonderful. Alan Moore wins always.
