Blu-Ray Disc Site

Ok,
maybe some of the more tech enabled in the RF Community could shed some
more light on the Blu-Ray Disc to me but I am not seeing what the big
deal is. Ok, your DVD's in 1080i HD and 7.1 Surround Sound. Ok, great.
What was wrong with my regular "old school" DVD's and the dinosaur 5.1
Dolby Digital or DTS. I mean I felt like I was in some of these films
with the system i have. Is the whole Blu-Ray going to REALLY make me
feel like I am there.

Yeah, a bit skeptical here about it.
Although the idea of the large 50GB Hard Drive and 25GB and 50Gb Discs
do seem nice for recording my shows in HD. I am ust wondering when
enough will be enough. Ho fucking crystal clear do things have to be on
the DVD viewing end. Weren't we already getting the best possible
picture and sound?

Oh, and a cool GRAND for one of these new
Players? I don't even remember DVD players being this high when they
came out. At best I could hope for these to be down to around $500 in a
few years if I decide to get one.

But yeah, just what is the big deal with these things?

The difference between Blu-Ray/HD DVD (two different formats) and DVD is pretty much the same thing as the difference between HDTV and standard TV. No, you were not getting the best possible picture before and yes, DVD players were just as expensive when they were first introduced. Prices will come down eventually, and one format will eventually win
out. Regular DVDs aren't going away any time soon if you don't want to
commit now.

It really comes down to this: a 720x480 resolution on regular DVDs and a 1920x1080 resolution with more vibrant colors on Blu-Ray/HD-DVD. Over twice the resolution. I mean, if you have an HDTV, you have it for a reason

Ooopsie on the thread title.

See, I am just tech illiterate
sometimes and maybe it is just me but on my HD Set now most of my
movies look great. Now some do have a bit of colour separation on them
and I just discount them as lower end discs. Most of my better produced
bigger studio stuff does look great for me now. Maybe I need a side by
side comparison.

Thanks for the info HBOX.

Doesn't the movie itself need to be filmed in HD for the HD-DVD technology to matter?

Won't, say, a Goodfellas HD-DVD look exactly the same as a Goodfellas DVD since it wasn't filmed in high definition?
