Kind of a crappy name, but it's original at least. Also, it couples with the New Have Knights hockey team. The best warriors of the East and the best warriors of the West play at the New Haven Coliseum.
Ninjas Invade New Haven
New Haven, Conn. - Connecticut's newest professional sport team will be known as the New Haven Ninjas, the arenafootball2 franchise announced today in a press conference at the New Haven Coliseum.
Fans voted for the winning entry on the Coliseum's website, www.nhcoliseum.com, from five finalists the Cyclones, Gladiators, Hawkeyes, Ninjas, and ShoreDawgs. The five were selected from a list of 280 suggestions received in the first part of the Name the Team contest. The person who originally submitted the name "Ninjas" will receive a pair of season tickets and a replica jersey. In celebration of the announcement, the team is running a merchandise special from Monday, October 22 through Friday, October 26 with every t-shirt on sale for just $7.
"Of the finalists, we were fond of Ninjas for two reasons," said Senior VP of Operations Mike Picker. "First, we didn't think that name had ever been used before in sports so it was an original. Second, it had an Asian influence, which was nice. The fact that it was an original idea from the fans in New Haven and it was the clear vote-getter made it a very easy decision for the organization to go with."
The Ninjas are owned/operated by Charles Wang, who also owns the New York Islanders of the NHL and the New York Dragons of the Arena Football League.
"Announcing the name is the kick-off to our inaugural season," commented Coliseum General Manager Lisa Audi. "I think the name reflects a lot of what two-way Ironman football is all about - you have to be a warrior to play the game."
Ninja merchandise is on sale now at the Ninjas' offices at the New Haven Coliseum, and can be viewed on the team's soon-to-be-launched website, www.newhavenninjas.com. Season tickets start as low as $72 and are available by calling 203-503-6011.
The team will begin play in April of 2002 and will feature regional players from the Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island area. Interested players should call 203-503-6004 to place their name on a potential try-out list.
