Actually when they come around this area, I like to stand out on the back porch. For some reason, all big weather stuff i find insanely interesting. I hope for blizzards and bad storms, I dont know why.
and by bad storms i dont mean ones that kill people, but i like when the weather is incredibly bad outside for some reason. When floyd was here, I actually went outside a few times just to hang and see what it was like
yea, believe it or not, with all the money in the NY area, power seems to go out pretty easily here. At least around where I live, maybe cause its not so densly populated. I can only imagine, after the few New Jersey summer days ive spent without AC and lights and cold food, what its like in the southern heat and humidity
I do not like the prospect of how hard my job will become if indded we did get hit by a massive storm. I work for a uitility and what I have to do (I have a training session this month) is I have to report to a sub-station and me and a few guys have to go out with a trainer and trace along an electric circut that comes out from the sub-station in a drill that fakes a storms impact on the electric circuts taht imact neighborhoods. It is kind of cool, as I get out of my office and walk around peoples yards, looking for dammage to utility poles and what not, and have to report back to the sub-station commader and dammage. He would then radio the crews to repair what I find. I never had to actually do it, and we have been very lucky, but guys I know had done it when hurricane Gloria hit and they were out in the field for over a month! It is very intersting and I do also share Snoogans feelings about bad weather. When I was a kid I use to stand out on the porch hoping to see lightning hit something. I love that stuff. The harsher the weather, the more excited I become. I hate the notion now of being in a massive snow storm though...But big wind and rain? Massive lightning and thunder? Bring it on!

*EDIT - I didnt fly down to be witness the hurricane, that would be insanity. I had plans to go to disney and wanted to wait out the storm rather than miss a whole day due to canceled flights.

I thought I'd revive this thread since Hurricane season is heading towards its peak!

Although I guess it has been quiet so far.

But... how about a National Hurricane Center scandal!

National Hurricane Center director Bill Proenza has left his position (http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/07/09/hurricane.official/index.html)

Why?

Apparently, the staff signed a petition wanting to oust him over comments he made last month:

Proenza caused an uproar last month with comments about a key hurricane satellite called QuikSCAT. The satellite is five years beyond its life expectancy and operating on a backup transmitter. Proenza said if it were to fail, forecast tracks could be thrown off by as much as 16 percent.

He said Washington reprimanded him for the remarks: "They wanted me to be quiet about it."

If something is broke, shouldn't it be your responsibility to fix it? I have a feeling that it would "cost too much" so Washington wanted him to SSHHHHHHHH.

Doesn't seem right to me.
