The Nintendo DS Lite comes out today, I'm heading to Target to get mine in about an hour. Going to pick up the black version and the New Super Mario Bros. and Metroid Prime: Hunters, maybe some Brain Age. I've ordered the cartridge for it that has a compact flash card reader in it so I can watch movies and listen to mp3s on it.

Anyone else picking up a DS Lite today?

I reserved a copy like a month ago. It's paid off waiting there for me to go pick it up today on its street release date.

Gonna buy the new Mario Bros. with it.

It's a nice alternative to the PSP at half the cost. As I understand it, the innovations on the new model are that it's smaller and the screen is brighter. Is there anything more than that? That's pretty cool, but it's probably not enough of an improvement to get me to upgrade (unlike the addition of a backlit screen for the GBA SP, which made me run out and get a new GBA). Although I could use a second DS because my wife keeps hogging it to play Brain Age.

The cartridge with the compact flash reader, where do you get that and how much does it run? I assume that works on all models of the DS and not just the new one.

Anyone have any game recommendations? So far, I've enjoyed the following:

Super Mario 64 DS - A great port of the old N64 game

Wario Ware - Easier to finish than the two previous Wario titles for the GBA, but still fun. I'm a big fan of any game you can pick up and play for a few minutes at a time, and games you play with the stylus are usually fun.

Brain Age - Pretty simple and graphically not very sophisticated, but my wife and I have spent hours doing the brain exercises and playing sudoku on the thing. It's a pretty inexpensive title as well.

Feel the Magic - Ok, this one's fucking weird, and it has the worst videogame cover and name ever. The story is that you're some guy who meets and pursues a woman, and weird shit happens along the way, so you have a set of really bizarro tasks that you have to perform using the stylus and touch screen and the microphone -- such as coaxing goldgish out of a guy's stomach, saving people from quicksand, clearing lanes of road so people riding shopping carts down hills down't wipe out, flinging people at some kind of robot car to put it out of commission, tap 100 bulls with the stylus without touching any skiers. Weird shit. Anyway, it's actually pretty fun, and given the fact that you can pick it up for under $10 used from Amazon, it's probably worth it.

Palarium - It's a puzzle game. One mode is trying to figure out puzzles, while the other mode is a Tetris type speed thing. Fun, although there's less depth to it than some of the DS games and it really doesn't show off the DS' capabilities. You can pick this one up used for under $10 from Amazon as well, and it's worth that.

What else is worth picking up? I'll probably grab Mario Kart or the Metroid game next.

I was out and about today and Captain Impule Control bought a DS lite with Brain Age and Advance Wars. I would have picked up Kart but they didn't have it in the store I bought it at and didn't feel like walking over to EB. Of course, I'd love to pick it up later this week and run a RonFez.Net internet Mario Kart DS game.

After playing thru day 1 of Brain Age, I gotta say my brain hurt by the time I was done playing. Can't wait till tomorrow to do it again with my 70 year old brain.

I've been playing my DS for a little while now. The new Mario Bros. game is great. I was really surprised at how many extra games there are. Little games you can pick up quick and waste a few moments on line or something.

Very cool. Glad I bought this thing.

So to the people who got a Lite after having a, um, DS Fat.. how does it compare? Is it worth the update?

And for anyone who is any sort of rhythm game fan at all needs the following game:

Ouendan. It's one of the greatest games ever in the genre and worth the import price of about $50. It's in Japanese but you really don't need to know any of the language to have a fun time with the game. The soundtrack is awesome, the gameplay is fun, and it's one of the hottest imports on the DS scene. A version of it is coming to America under the name Elite Beat Agents but I don't think it will be able to compare to the joy of the original. Go buy it. You won't regret it.

Oh, I suppose I should give the name of the game.. Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan!

I never had a DS fat, so I was pretty psyched to get the Lite. I will def. check out Brain Age and the Kirby canvas game. I would recommend you all get the Max Media dock so you can watch movies, play mp3s, and play emulated NES and SNES games on the Lite, here is a link: Buy Max Media Dock (Nintendo DS) In Stock

I'm already in love with the thing.

1st off, the PSP fucking sucks for load time, the DS is a cartridge system so no waiting. Love that.

2nd, I can still play my old GBA games and it's give me a renewed interest in them.

3rd is it closes and isn't made of whatever the PSP is. One MAJOR complaint about the PSP is it's fucking filthy after you're done playing it. Your big fingerprints are all over the black finish. Plus I don't feel safe putting it down just anywhere because the screen could get scratched if something hits it. The DS closes, protecting the screens and buttons. It's also made of a different plastic or at least finished differently. No huge fingerprints all over the place.

Kick ass. I just hope they start making more games, I was looking over titles and I'm less than impressed.

I've been practicing shit, trying to get gold medals on Easy in all the different tests for hours now. Not sure why but this game is very addictive and I'm happy I bought it. I bought my wife a DC lite the other night with the new mario game. It is awsome. She has been playing it non-stop. I have played with it a few times, I think I like it more than my PSP. Sure PSP is more powerful, but DC has better games, and they cost less than 40 bucks a pop.

The new SMB game is fantastic, got a 9.5/10 from IGN and one of only like 3 games ever to get a 10/10 from some uppity Japanese game magazine, or so the guy at EBGames told me awkwardly as I thrust my money at him to get out of there quicker.
It was only $20 brand new. Really makes me want to go back and get that "Brain Age" game too. Same price.

I'm not really feeling this one. I've had it a couple of days and worked at getting gold medals in all of the exercises at all of the skill levels. I figured once I did that, some other part of the game would open up. It didn't, so other than working my brain grade up, there's not much left in the game that I haven't already done. I like Brain Age better -- it sets up a daily regimen, gradually rolls out all of the activities and skill levels and includes 100+ Sudoku puzzles.

I haven't tried Academy yet. I'm still too busy with Brain Age. I don't get headaches playing it anymore, which I assume is a good thing. I'm unlocking the hard modes and having fun with that. I still have a few "games" that I have yet to unlock, and finished about half the Easy Sukodu puzzles so far.

SMB is getting great reviews, but I keep hearing you can finish the game with 100% in only a couple hours, which makes me hesitant to get it right now, when I barely have any DS games, so there's alot of games out there with more longevity.

For the last two weeks, I've been writing 5's as S's in Brain Age because it's faster when doing the timed calculations stuff. In the last week or so, I've noticed now that whenever I write a 5 anyplace else I've been doing it too. Arg. Now I have to watch any time I write numbers.
I traded in my Xbox system and a few Xbox game and my old DS at EBgames. They gave me 20% more trade in value for pre-ordering a black DS Lite so I didn't have to front any cash for the system. All i have is Mario Kart right now, can you guys recommend any good games?

What kinds of accesories are available? What would you reccomend ?

What are the wifi capabilities ? Should I get one for myself too ?

I'm not sure if I should be embarassed by this, but I'm fairly obsessed with "Yoshi Touch & Go". I picked it up at Gamestop used figuring that you can't go too wrong with a Nintendo franchise, and if it sucked I'd give it to my daughter. The whole premise of the game is that it works like a side-scroller, and you have to get Yoshi from point A to point B. The thing is that you don't move Yoshi. He just automatically moves from left to right. You have to clear a path for him for drawing lines over holes and knocking out enemies by throwing eggs or by circling them with the stylus. You also can collect coins by running Yoshi into them or by circling them with the stylus and dragging them to Yoshi. When I first started playing the game, I hated it. It seemed like merely a demo to show off the DS' features. The more I played, the more I got sucked in. I played on a train trip to DC and spent the entire trip playing without stopping. It's unforgiving, and there are usually many things going on at once, but it's pretty addictive. There's an aerial stage that starts the game that isn't nearly as fun as the side-scrolling part, but fortunately you can skip the aerial portion after you've done it once.

Also. is it just me, or is the DS starting to catch on? I'm seeing them out and about more than I did, and I've noticed that my local Gamestop and Circuit City have been placing their DS stock in more prominent places than they did before.

So are you saying that if I get a couple of these for my sons for Christmas, I should plan on getting one for myself sometime in the new year ?

Jump Ultimate Stars came in the mail yesterday..

It's 100% awesome.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlaJw_TUoTc

That video gives a great overview of the game, got me wanting the game even more while waiting for it to show up.

Came yesterday. Sat around for an hour something putzing around in it unlocking stuff and trying to figure out the deck maker. The level of customization is crazy, I played some Wi-Fi (didn't lag much, I was surprised, although one game completely locked up) and there are so many things that you can do with your teams that everyone I played against had completely different set ups. You could sit there for an hour just putzing around making a deck, upgrading your guys, and trying out different set ups. Has a single cart multiplayer mode that lets you putz around with simple decks to get a feel for the game, Wi-Fi or multicard play is where it's at. Missions are nifty, need a FAQ to understand them since its all in Japanese but that's not too bad.

So much anime in it. I don't even know half of it but it's really exciting to see the ones I do know in their super forms battling against each other. Bleach, Naurto, and Dragon Ball Z should be enough to make it sell like hotcakes over here, too bad licensing issues means it will never get localized.

FIFA is ok and Madden was better than I expected. The framrate and animations are pretty well done considering the hardware it's on. That said, I couldn't really see my self playing an entire season on that small screen. I would rather throw a SNES emulator on my cf card and play tecmo super bowl.

If you don't compare it to the DS it's doing pretty well in it's own right. Nintendo has dominated the handheld market longer and more extensively than any company has dominated any segment of the market.

I just got one, and think it's awesome already. Can anyone recommend some good games? I've got FF3 and am planning on getting Mario, anything new come out recently?

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops was just released, Final Fantasy Crisis Core will hit next year, a Final Fantasy Tactics remake was just announced, Elder Scrolls: Oblivion will hit next year, a new Ratchet and Clank game will be released in February and supposedly Gran Turismo is coming at some point. That on top of two GTAs, Daxter, LocoRoco, Wipeout Pure and Lumines. I think PSP's lineup is underrated, which is understandable considering DS's larger and cheaper library.

So I've been playing a lot of Seven Bridge on Clubhouse Games. I'm not sure why. It's a kind of dumb, semi-obscure card game, but I enjoy it. The problem is that no one ever wants to play it online. So anyway, yesterday I fired up the DS and found 2 people who were willing to play. I played 4 matches and won three of them. Long story short -- there are so few people who play Seven Bridge online (only something like 214 total), that I have now been bestowed a very high ranking in this game from winning 3 out of 4.

You are reading the post of the #26 ranked Clubhouse Games Seven Bridge player in the world!!!!

so i just bought a ds today. ive wanted one for a while but finally decided to get one. i play on the kid's gameboys that i watch for afterschool care and finally broke down and bought my own.
i picked up mario kart but it was 35 bucks, which i don't plan on spending on a ds game in the future. what are some of the older games whch are good that i can picked up pre-played from eb-games and stuff. i've heard trauma center is fun. i would like to get some of the cheaper, used games though.

Import.
EBA and Ouendan are the same games in concept but totally different in terms of music. In the Japanese ones you play the role as a male cheerleader squad and all the music is j-pop stuff. EBA took the concept and Americanized it with Avril Lavigne and The Village People. Here the main characters were changed from the cheer squad to the police force thing.
If you like the American one and don't live in fear of Japanese music it's one of the best games you can import. You don't really need to be able to read Japanese to be able to play the game. It's real easy to understand and the graphics completely tell the story.
A sequel is coming for EBA here in English, just not yet.

The DS has a built in mic. On the DS Lite, it's that little hole between the screens. On the basic DS, it's just below the touch screen.

With Mother's Day coming up soon I figured I'd pick up a game for my Mom. Easy enough, but the problem is that she's not particularly good at games- especially those that require reflexes. She bought Zelda because she heard such great things about it but she couldn't pull it off, got extremely frustrated and quit. Any ideas on what she might enjoy? A couple points:
1. She quite enjoyed Hotel Dusk: Room 215. I got her Trace Memory for Christmas because it was along the same lines, but she didn't like it as much because the controls were clunky in comparison and she didn't care for the story. Any other good adventure games out there?
2. She already has Brain Age and a few other games like that. She says she doesn't need any more collections of mini games. She's also said that Nintendogs sounds like a dumb concept.
3. Right now I'm looking at getting one of the Phoenix Wright games, Animal Crossing or Trauma Center. Would she have any trouble with these?

I haven't played Phoenix Wright. Trauma Center requires you to do things quickly, so I'd say no on that one. Animal Crossing is a game you can play at your own pace, and it really isn't possible to really fail, so if she would be interested in walking around a town, talking to animals, running errands, fishing, planting stuff, etc. then that might be a game for her. Some people get really into that one, but most people I know tapped out on that one after about a month tops.

It's one of the hardest games in existance. Unless she has lightning fast reflexes and nerves of steel she'll want to throw the DS across the room by the end of it. I remember very vividly the latter parts of the game and I'd be physically shaking as I finished a level due to how stressful it was.

DO NOT, and I repeat, DO NOT get a Lego game for the DS. The last one I bought was dogshit. I bought the same game for the PSP and it was light years ahead of the DS one.
A different company developed the last one and it was just awful, so if they release new Lego games for the DS read a lot of reviews or even rent it 1st.

The DS FF3 was pretty weak. Too much micromanagement, the camera zoom, and weak graphics kinda blew. The eventual remake of FF6 (originally released as FF3 in America on the SNES) will make me very happy.
I have two gripes:
1. I would much rather see the game on PSP with better graphics.
2. With the transition to 3D for FF4, you lose the original hand drawn sprites and feel of the old game. I prefer the updated look of the F1 and FF2 games on PSP. I just like the art of it.

The DS FF3 was pretty weak. Too much micromanagement, the camera zoom, and weak graphics kinda blew. The eventual remake of FF6 (originally released as FF3 in America on the SNES) will make me very happy.

Only rumors right now. I assume they will go with FF5 next....which blows.
EVERYONE want FF6 (FF3snes) though. It is considered one of the best rpgs of all time. Just depends where it is going.
I'd much rather see it on the PSP, just because the graphics and art were fantastic on the SNES.

JP Final Fantasy 6 was released in the US on the SNES as Final Fantasy 3. This was re-released on GBA last year.

Speaking of Final Fantasy, I was playing the GBA version of FF1. Fun, but pretty unbalanced. I ripped through the game fairly easily in about 20 hours without any problems. I have the maximum amount of gil and destroying everyone who comes up against me. That is, until the painfully tough final boss. I checked out a FAQ and apparently he has 20,000 hp compared to the next most powerful boss who has 5000. I know the end of the game needs to be tough, but it was just too much too fast.
The DS FF3 was pretty weak. Too much micromanagement, the camera zoom, and weak graphics kinda blew. The eventual remake of FF6 (originally released as FF3 in America on the SNES) will make me very happy.
Weak graphics?? IMO it pushes what the DS is capable of hardware wise. It has been awhile since i've played it but i don't remember it not delivering on that front. My biggest gripe about it is the very simple story, but i can understand cause it was a remake of a nes game.
The order goes like this in case anyone cares...
Final Fantasy (Japan, US)
Final Fantasy 2 (Japan only)
Final Fantasy 3 (Japan only)
Final Fantasy 4 (Japan, Number 2 in US)
Final Fantasy 5 (Japan only)
Final Fantasy 6 (Japan, Number 3 in US)
Final Fantasy 7 (Real order used from now on)

Not to be Ned Negative, but what a letdown. The DS Lite was a huge improvement over the original DS, and I was expecting something like that.
I'd much rather have a GBA slot than a camera (or even two) And what's the point of having 2 cameras?
On top of this, we won't get this in the US until well into 2009 (http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/02/nintendo-dsi-hitting-us-well-into-2009/)
The SD slot is a good idea, but will leave the door wide open for piracy, which is already a big problem on the DS.

I don't mind the lack of a GBA slot. I've heard very few good things about the DS Guitar Hero, and if I wanna play a GBA game I use my GBA SP. I still haven't upgraded to DS Lite so I'll probably wait for this one to come out.

I just finished playing Jack Hunter: Detective Chronicles. It had potential but it was incredibly easy and linear. It's basically the investigation stages of Phoenix Wright, only without the humour. The problem is that they hold your hand through the whole game. They only let you go to the locations that are pertinent to what's going on at that moment so you're never searching for what to do next. Plus, they won't let you leave a location until you're done so it's just a matter of going through the menus and picking every available option until they let you leave. To make matters worse there are only three cases but apparently the Japanese version had six, not that I really needed three more mediocre mysteries to plod through. I was able to finish up in about 5 hours, though I'll admit that I was so bored with the last case that I skipped most of the dialogue.

I would suggest you do not purchase a DSi until more info is out. Nintendo really shit the bed with this announcement and its features. Word on the street is that it will be region locked also, first time Nintendo has done that with one of their handhelds. The missing GBA slot will hinder you ability to use it for game with attachements that plug in there (Guitar Hero: World Tour, any tilt games, etc.)
I can't see a reason for paying 180 bucks for this system for a shitty .3 Megapixel camera. The SD cards thing is nice, but pointless when you can buy a Flash Card for 40 bucks and download games onto it already. That's piracy though. ... So you can purchase a Flash bundle that includes DS and GBA flash cards. That's upwards of 400+ games you can play on your regular DS.
Nintendo's stock shot down from this announcement. The DSi is a sham and a milk the cow. I'd say skip it for now, and wait until the true next handheld. PLUS............tons of christmas deals and bundles this Christmas.

I really really really really really really hope that FF6 is remade like this. I was hoping Chrono Trigger would be too, but now I hear it is adirect port. No way I'm buying a direct port, when Square Enix could have brought this team aboard to make a legit remake! (http://www.opcoder.com/projects/chrono/)

From what I hear Chrono Trigger DS is something in between a remake and a direct port. An indirect port, I guess? Supposedly it will have the FMV animations from the Playstation port, a new dungeon, a new translation and the usual stylus controls and wireless features I never use.

It's coming out this week. i can't wait.
It's a port of the PS1 port, with a new ending (13 endings) and a new world (with a new quests). You can also toggle it so that the animated cutscenes (from the PS1 port) plays onto the DS version.
And the Multiplayer consists of farming/training your monsters and battling them.

I didn't want to start a new thread but I could use some info. My wife just ordered a DS bundle online from BJ's. The price was great so she went for it. The DS that we bought a year ago for my oldest was from TRU and we also got the service/replacement plan.
BJ's didn't offer a service/replacement plan. Is there a plan that is similiar to the TRU plan that I can purchase? The DS is already being shipped so I can't cancel the order. I really don't want to return it and buy one from TRU. Thanks

I know it's a response to an old question, but since you are into JRPGs have you picked up The World Ends With You ?
It has everything. Real time battles, no random encounters, cool characters (get past the first couple hours, you'll hate the main kid but you're supposed to), tons of character customization, and a whacky brain destroying dual screen battle system. Also has a really great feature in which your equipment (buttons you wear) level up in real time. Say you play it on a Wednesday and can't get to it again until Saturday. When you go back into your game you're stuff will have gained experience.
Game is set in Shibuya so it's semi based on reality, and when you actually go there you'll be able to say "Oh man! This is from the game!" like I did.
Also has a great soundtrack.
