Anyone see it this weekend? I have kids, so I have an excuse, but as far as kids movies go, Pixar does a pretty darn good job. It was pretty enjoyable. There were a couple of slow patches, and there were some plot points that were probably obvious to anyone who isn't a kid, but ultimately it's not a bad way to spend two hours watching a movie with a kid. My favorite touch: having Jeremy Piven basically playing his Ari Gold character from "Entourage" as the off-screen agent.

He's also the only one to pick Cars as one of his top five summer blockbusters, so ultimately I'm actually helping him by seeing it.

I have not seen it. I usually pick up the DVD at Target a couple months later, and REALLY enjoy it at home.

From the word of mouth I have caught, visually stunning, but lacking in plot. Not close to TS2 or Nemo story-wise!

OK, that was the review from an 8 year old. Jesus Christ, kid. Go out and throw the ball around, or ride your bike for an hour or two!

This is the first Pixar film that I have no desire to see. I don't know why either, I loved everyone so far why wouldn't I love this one?. I think that it might be because unlike all the other films Cars doesn't feature any human-like characters.

I really cannot wait to see it as I worship all things Pixar. The
character design (importantly) and story has always been so compelling
for me. One day it is my dream to be either working for them in some
capacity.
I think it'll do big business just because it's a Pixar movie, but I don't see it going Nemo or Toy Story big. My guess is that the audience will find it harder to connect with something that can't be effectively anthropomorphized. I could see someone caring about a fish, but an '87 Toyota Tercel isn't gonna pull at my heartstrings.
Those items should pull at your heartstrings? I eat fish for dinner, why would I care about an animated one?

If Pixar (or whoever) did a good job it shouldn't matter what kind of object/animal/person they used for a cartoon. A fish is at least alive and people even keep them as pets. A doll at least looks like a human. To me, making a movie about cars that talk would have the same emotional commitment involved as a movie about screwdrivers or rocks.

I loved this movie. The story was typical but, definitely strong. The sound FX are amazing. I can almost guarantee an oscar for sound FX or sound FX editing.

I was listening to a PIXAR commentary track (maybe it was THE INCREDIBLES) and one of the animators said that it's hard for them to know exactly how photo-real they want these images to look. Sometimes, they make something that looks so real, they have to dial it down a bit or do something to the color to make it more "cartoony". They do this because they think the audience will be "weirded out or confused". Like, maybe they won't know if it's animation or stop-motion. Personally, I'd like to see how real they can get it. The lighting in CARS is so amazing, you'd swear there is a lightsource somewhere. If that's the dialed down version, I can't even imagine what the "true" animation looked like!
