I found this on YouTube and thought it was the most bizarre thing in the world. But I guess it makes sense considering the year and that The Flintstones was a legit primetime series on ABC before it became all pussified with Pebbles, Bam Bam, and the posterchild for cartoon jumping the shark, the Great Gazoo.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_O5pA1k0JBI&search=flintstones%20winston

Marcpsych

If I'm not mistaken, they talked about this (and played it) on the R&F show towards the end of the WJFK days. Thanks for the link. I've been wanting to actually see it!

Thank you for letting me know that they played it. Actually, I sent it to Ron, as well, the other day because I figured it might be something he would like or want to play on the show. I didn't know if they played it on XM or not.

It is really weird how this was a totally acceptable form of advertising back then.

Marc

Funny this thread should come up because I just found these sweet daddies in a shop in Sana'a the other day. Definitely not legit, but just a sad but funny Arab idea for a marketing gimick: ashtrays! You know... for kids!

It's Wheezie the Pooh and Tumor too!!!

Marketing smokes to kids? For shame!

i remember the Flintstones smoking once in a while during an episiode. i point it out because you will never see that now during a cartoon. hell, they are taking it out of comic books.

Shouldn't Popeye be hawking candy PIPES instead of cigarettes?

Also, I forgot to mention this in my original post, but part of the reason I found this so interesting is because I won a Flintstones ceraminc ashtray on eBay in 2001 or so. It had a Hanna Barbera copyright on the back and was from 1961. It had a raised image of Fred swinging a golf club on the front. They also had ones of Barney.

Marc

I know it's off topic, but this thread reminded me of one of the funniest videos I've ever seen on the web. For anyone who might not have seen it, I present:

Raging Fred

I actually have a DVD somewhere with the Flintstones hocking Bush Beer - it's a corporate commercial that is structured like an episode (15 minutes total, I think). The gist of the "story" is getting drunk make the bad things better. Ultimately, the cigarette one is funnier, but still odd how Fred and co. were always willing to shill, no matter what.

I guess no one saw anything wrong with cigarettes back in the 60's. It was just another product to hawk. Thinking about the current climate, with the hoopla over the epidemic of obese children and the removal of snack foods and vending machines from schools, it's not too crazy that we'll look back ten years from now in shock that cartoon characters like Bart Simpson were used to hawk Butterfingers.
