Half-Life 2 Episode One was released this morning.

I actually finished the whole thing this afternoon. As always, Valve has created an awe-inspiring environment even if the game as a whole doesn't live up to either 1 or 2. It started off really slow with some tedious, frustrating puzzles, but it really picks up towards the end and I was completely hooked again by the end. I'd say it was about half the length of Half-Life 2, but since its only $20 its still worth it. So while it wasn't perfect, I'd still say it was better than any of the Half-Life 1 expansions. It's also a good deal more challenging than Half-Life 2 as well. I really enjoyed, and can't wait for Episode Two.

I also wanted to mention what Valve did for this game that they also did for the Half-Life 2: Lost Coast tech demo: Commentary. Just like in movies, properly translated for a game. With commentary turned on, there are certain points where if you stand in a certain place the game pauses and an audio file plays giving insight into the game, who it was made, ect. It's incredibly fascinating if you are into that sort of thing. If you want to get an idea of what it is download Lost Coast for Half-Life 2 if you already own it. Lost Coast is free. I haven't tried it yet, but I've heard they even offer some plot clues that you'd likely miss otherwise thanks to Half-Life's unique storytelling.

I got home late last night to non-working cable, so by the time I got online, got the game updated and decrypted, I had about a half hour to play before bed. So good so far and just some amazing graphics and texture work. Lots of nice details.

While the game had you talking to Alyx's father on the screen at the beginning, I was zooming in on things and looking around. The skin textures on Alyx were amazing, the way the screen pixelated was cool, and with such a strange attention to detail, you can even see a little of Alyx's panties sticking up above the waist of her jeans in the back.

yargh! maybe you guys can lend a brother a hand?

im playing it on my notebook. well trying to. I've run WOW, Half life 2, FEAR, Godfather tons of new stuff. pretty high rez.

First problem is Steam tells me my drivers are out of date. Look on the ati site, my card isnt listed.. hahah lucky me.

email them, they tell me they dont support chipsets in notebooks, that i have to call the maker.

so i hit HP up, the most recent ati drivers they have are from feb. i already had those. Steam is probably recognizing my card in my notebook as a radeon derivitive, but not even the real point. usually games will run with outdated drivers not well, but sometimes good enough. besides i ran godfather no problem keyed way up.

so i go to the continue without updating option. game starts to load, get the guy with the valve for the eye, the loading screen, the main menu.

click new game, pick the start option. goes to load the intro or first level (dont even know yet)

gets 3/4 the way, game crashes.

the loading bar goes half to one side half to the other. i should probably post a pic. only thing is it locks the machine up then.

any advice?!

im so pissed, and pc games are a fucker to return, even with my friend managing the gamestop i go to.

any help would be much appreciated.

thanks.
