Anyone interested in this? They've been showing some pretty interesting shows. I liked the Pantera Behind the Music and have been enjoying Heavy: The Story of Metal (although they're covering bands I don't think count as metal such as AC/DC and Van Halen; they're hard rock at best). I saw The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years earlier today. It was a little sad when she (Penelope Spheeris) asked all the interviewees what they would do if they didn't make it. They were all adament they would make it. It was a sort of Do or Die attitude. Anyone have any albums by Odin? I rest my case.

They're replaying a lot of old shows like When KISS Ruled The World. And I'm kind of enjoying Super Group.

Not to beat a dead horse, I'm not a big Motley Crue fan (although I enjoyed The Dirt) but Mick Marrs is the bravest person in music today. He has a degenerative disease. Besides he had the coolest things to say in The Dirt.

All I remember from the Decline of Western Civilization Part II was the guy getting interviewed floating in his pool with mom sitting by the side. I think he's drinking Jack Daniels from the bottle, and his mom is holding up Ok, until they ask him where he thinks he'll be in 5 years. She starts bawling, I think, when he says 'I'll probably be dead.'

I saw a 20th anniversary show on Poison, which was just basically brief interviews and videos. They must have shown between 6 and 8 videos. It amazes me how many Poison songs I know; word for word! I didn't listen hair metal in the 80s. How the hell did that happen? Awful!

My band kept telling me to watch, I kept forgetting.

You would have really liked Heavy: The Story of Metal. Except for the third episode; all hair metal. I know you're not a hair metal guy. But I have to admit I was fascinated by the scene. Total indulgence, which the 80s was all about. I've developed a new metal crush-- Brent Muscat of Faster Pussycat. I'm so shallow.

They are running back to back episodes of it this weekend. Try to check it out. I know you're a busy guy.

I know you weren't exposed to much heavy music in your youth, but how do you feel about bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest touring? Would you see them?

To start, I am a Metal student who took WSOU-101. It started with Metallica, Maiden, Slayer, Priest, Accept, Motorhead, etc. Then, all of a sudden L.A. exploded! Motley Crue, Ratt, Poison, Faster Pussycat, LA Guns. It was an unbelievable time. Yes looking back, this is borderline metal, but never before had metal, not only broken, but taken over the Top 40! Then we got Cinderella, King's X, Kix, Overkill, bands from all over the country who took it to the next level.

Then Guns N Roses, Appetite for destruction!

Then Seattle happened, and put "Popular" metal off to the side. But is that still not metal? The definitions and boundaries are too vague.

Anyway, to totally discount "Hair" Metal is quite unfair. It brought a form of metal to the masses!

Alice S. Fuzzybutt

I won't disagree with you Hottub. Hair metal brought metal to the masses, especially on the Sunset Strip. But it got SO overblown. They lost credibility with the POWER BALLADS. It became POP. Which is just drivel. The lead singer of Warrant regrets to this day the fact he wrote Cherry Pie. (I leared that from VH1. I suck!)

But I will agree they have a place in music history.

Guns and Roses really made a difference in the late 80s. I heard Appetite For Destruction and was just BLOWN AWAY. Not a bad song on that album. Some of my friends had hardcore bands, but they were still into Anthrax, Metallica. It's really cool Anthrax is still around. I remember listening to them in my friend's boyfriend's room.

I'm aging myself.

Sorry, I completely missed your comments on Grunge.

I think Alice in Chains and Sound Garden are metal. Bands like Nirvana and Mudhoney aren't

L7 was just a mess.

Hottub

P, I still listen to Anthrax. They have a certain "Crunch Crunch" sound that is still to be matched.

(yeah, you probably don't care, but I will rant on anyway)

Spreading the Disease, Among the Living, still stand up. Then you have Attack of the Killer "B"'s. Working with Public Enemy, Amazing!

Joey Belladonna's vocals just have a certain "Something". Dan and Scott's combined guitars make the Anthrax sound. Frank Bello and Charlie Benante, hardest working rhythm section. Period!

(yeah, you probably don't care, but I will rant on anyway)

But course I care! It was music me and my friends were into. I really don't have a complete grasp on metal but I totally respect it. Who didn't laugh at Spinal Tap. I've seen plenty of Spinal Tap moments! I think most musicians respect Spinal Tap.

Like I said, I'm pretty much a novice at metal. But deep down inside it's part of me. I loved Led Zeppelin and Sabbath back when I was in junior high. I think Rob Halford is God!

The HEAVY series was pretty cool and the first two episodes really
did it for me. Yes, there was the hair metal and then the 4th Episode
on Metallica and the thrash and then into the 90's was ok. I wish there
would have been more. Hardly any mention of Venom or Celtic Frost and
very little on the new breed of metal today. Also hardly any death
metal except for the Death t-shirt.Nothing on the Florida scene as a
whole. Grindcore? Napalm? Carcass? It was ok but I hope there will be a
DVD with a ton of extras and maybe some light on what the
aforementioned genres and bands brought to metal.

I may be speaking a head of turn here but I am only a little bit into Metal: A Headbangers Journey
and I am finding that really really good. Very interesting the mini
movie on the Black Metal of Norway was. Just insanity with those Nords.
Just essentially a film made by a lifelong fan of Heavy metal and his
journey.

Fluffernutter, comment?

Gene, get the makeup out of your hair.

Seriously,
the only KISS thing I am looking forward to is Paul Stanleys solo
album. To this day, the only man I would ever have hold me while I rest
my head on his pillowy chest of hair. I love the man.

KISS ended
for me when I saw them on the reunion tour in 1997. 9th row and I was
moist as could be. My childhood dream after salivating in front of HBO
coming to life at the ripe age of 24.
Oh well Sebastian hasn't gotten slapped yet but the 2nd show was pretty good. Showed him as a premodona personified.
