Even though I am a country music fan I really enjoy new rock. I was just wondering who everyone else enjoyed. At the time I am really into NickleBack.

Nickelback is one of those things you enjoy in shame, like wackin it. A real guilty pleasure. I think though that Incubus could be headed towards greatness. Possibly the heirs to the U2 throne.

<p>I would have to say that GREEN DAY and U2 are the bands that will define MY generation. Hit after hit after hit. No lineup changes. No reunions. Some songs have a real message, others are just for having fun. No stories of rehab. No celebrity breakups. They never even show up in any tabloids. Just a real emphasis on putting out records and touring to support them.</p><p>Radiohead, Coldplay, No Doubt, etc etc... definitely made their mark but, they don't get quite as much adulation from both the public and the media. U2 and GREENDAY have Rock n' Roll HOF written all over them.</p><p> </p>

<p>Gov't Mule</p><p>These guys are probably one of the best rock bands I've ever listened to or seen.</p><p>The lead guitarist and lead vocals Warren Haynes still plays occasionally with Allman brothers but has been doin' his own thing since about '98 with Allen Woody also from ABB, who passed away in '02 i believe, and Matt Abts on drums.</p><p>He had many bass players playing with him since Woody's death including Jason Newsted from Black Sabbath, Metallica but has had Andy Hess on bass full-time and Danny Louis on keyboards.</p><p>These guys play alot of east coast shows and if you ever get a chance to check them out, it will be worth every penny to go.</p><p><a href="http://www.mule.net/index.php">http://www.mule.net/index.php</a></p>

<p>How are we defining this generation? Do we mean the generation the poster was born in, or the generation of the 2000's? Its a weird question to ask without giving parameters. </p><p> Gov't Mule is good, but I dont know about the best of the generation. They have been around since the 90's as well, so depending on which generation we are talking about who knows. Warren Haynes is a guitar god, but I still think his best stuff is with Allman Brothers. Derek trucks is another guitar good...one could say The Derek Trucks Band is better then Gov't Mule depending on what you listen for and what gets your groove going.</p><p>Early Phish (before 1st Hiatus) is amazing. Once they came back though, they blew and so did the music, because Trey was on so many drugs and realized he could piss on the crowd and they would cheer for it.</p><p>I would totally disagree with green day and u2 but that is my personal opinion, i do understand why people love them but they are not for me.</p><p>For me, I would say the artists that have most influenced me in the past 10 years lets say, are</p><p>Nickel Creek - one of the most revolutionzing bands of this time period. They are bringing Bluegrass to the masses and making it their own in the process. They are not on a big label, Sugar Hill, they have none to very little radio play, besides country stations, they have no music videos anywhere, except on CMT. Yet they are regarded as some of the best musicians of their time. Chris Thile is highly regarded as the best mandolin player, even David Grisman has said he wishes he had Thile's creativity and ability with a mandolin. Sean Watkins is one of the most amazing acoustic guitar players to ever pick up a guitar. He has won many awards for flat picking and for guitar player of the year. Sara Watkins on the Fiddle has also won many competitions. All Three have won the top award at Telluride.</p><p>Sigur Ros - to me another amazing band. They have gotten a little bigger as of late, but still put on an amazing show. Some people dont like it because they make up their own words, but i just listen to the lead singer and imagine his voice as another instrument, his voice is absolutely amazing.</p><p>Spoon - another amazing band with amazing lyrics, music and everything else.</p><p>Belle and Sebastian - not enough words to state how amazing they are.</p><p>The Grateful Dead - my favorite band of all time, so i obviously have to throw them into there.</p><p>Rilo Kiley - innovative, amazing lead singer (Jenny Lewis), great lyrics, amazing musicians as well.</p><p>The Postal Service - Ben is just a genius and when you match him up with Jenny Lewis its magic that happens. </p><p>Phish - for obvious reasons.</p><p>DMB - look i know alot of people hate them, and hate their music. But they went from being a bar band, and selling cd's out of their trunk to being one of the biggest bands ever (granted because of frat boys and girls who want dave) but you cannot compare anyone to their work ethic or how many live shows they do a year (besides the Dead when they were around). yes this band has changed alot as well over time, from a jamband/pop band to a straight pop/rock band. If you listen to some of their 1992-1993 stuff it is very good and amazing (when Peter Grieser was still in the band) Boyd and Carter are two of the most talented people at the instruments they play, violin and drums respectively. </p><p>These are my best bands of my mind...no one can say who the best band of the generation is, thats why those lists in music magazines always suck, because these things are opinion based. </p><p>Now you can bash me. </p><p> </p>

<p>I agree with Phish.</p><p>DMB truly does belong up on the list. For many of the same reasons I said u2 and Greenday...it's all about the music with those guys. Putting out records and touring everywhere. That's how to create a legacy. PLUS, their music is quirky. Not everybody likes it (including myself) but, even the haters would have to admit that they achieved success without any gimmicks.</p><p>People like Michael Jackson sold a ton of records but, after all is said and done, nobody equates MJ with MUSIC. Same could be said for Madonna. Image first, content later.</p><p>DMB amassed a huge following based on their music. Not their looks or their clothes etc etc. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p>

<p>i'd have to give it to Radiohead. 10 years from now, its going to be radiohead that we remember, just like Nirvana in the 90's and U2 in the 80's</p><p>That said, the best music these days is coming out of the alt.country scene. Try some Jackie Green. I've really be getting into him.</p><p>The only reason why I didnt say Wilco or Govt. Mule is because some very wise men beat me to it.</p>

Nickel Creek - one of the most revolutionzing bands of this time period. They are bringing Bluegrass to the masses and making it their own in the process. As much as I love Nickel Creek, I love Alison Krauss and Union Station just a bit more (Alison produced a couple of Nickel Creek albums BTW)
They're still basically kids, but I think they are really good, just not in the AKUS league yet

Songwritng not so much, AKUS is still light years ahead of them. Yes i knew Alison produced their first two albums on sugar hill. They are kids, the oldest member of the band (not including bassist who changes) is 29. But they have also been a band for 10+years, longer then most bands in todays world. </p><p>I love AKUS as well, but will not listen to them if I want catchy songs with bluegrass subtles. I will listen to AKUS if i do want just some good ole bluegrass music with pop subtles in it. I cant really compare the two because even though they are so alike, they are completely different. </p><p>El Mudo you should check out the live show of AKUS and Nickel Creek together its amazing, you are able to find it on furthurnet or etree depending if the seeder is up. </p>

Obviously, The Mars Volta. Check out this tracklisting from Frances the Mute, which is well over an hour in length: <br>
1. "Cygnus....Vismund Cygnus" - 13:08<br>
1. "Sarcophagi"<br>
2. "Umbilical Syllables"<br>
3. "Facilis Descensus Averni"<br>
4. "Con Safo"<br>
2. "The Widow" - 5:57<br>
3. "L'Via L'Viaquez" - 12:27<br>
4. "Miranda, That Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore" - 13:15<br>
1. "Vade Mecum"<br>
2. "Pour Another Icepick"<br>
3. "Pisacis (Phra-Men-Ma)"<br>
4. "Con Safo"<br>
5. "Cassandra Gemini" - 32:32<br>
1. "Tarantism'"<br>
2. "Plant a Nail in the Navel Stream"<br>
3. "Faminepulse"<br>
4. "Multiple Spouse Wounds"<br>
5. "Sarcophagi"<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
If you want me to be serious, I'd go with what ADF said: "Radiohead, duh." By leaps and bounds.<br>
Green Day only has one good album. And by that I mean Dookie. I was thoroughly unimpressed with American Idiot. I can't help myself from singing along with "When I come around" though. <br>
I've always thought Nickleback was terrible. Although I hear their cover of the "Pisacis (Phra-Men-Ma)" section of "Miranda, that Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore" is fantastic.
Nice to see Kool Keith and Postal Service getting some recognition too, although Postal Service is still chick music, by and large.

<p>I wonder why there have been no bands to succeed on the level of the greats (Beatles, Stones, Who, Zep, etc.) since U2. There have been a lot of great albums put out in the past 10 years or so, but no band that's really revolutionary in terms of sound and style.</p><p>Maybe it's all been done before, and at this point it's impossible to "grow" any of the genres under the "rock" umbrella. </p>

I always liked to think of the Best Bands of this generation aren't
exactly the bands that broke big and had lots of record sales but the
bands that flew under the radar and never got to that radio play
status. I am convinced that bands like U2, The Rolling Stones, The
Police, Tool and other bands that just blow up aren't necessarily good
bands but more so pushed by the record labels and the recording
industry as to what "they" think the standards are of what is good.
It's just unmitigated shit that is processed over and over and just
comes off as uninspired dreck for the most part. Not saying those bands
have always been like that but you get one or two inspired albums, the
band breaks big and then they don't have to work as hard anymore
because they built their fanbase on those first couple albums. U2 has
been doing that for the last 15 years. Tool is living off of that now.<br />

<p>Last Friday Gov't Mule cemented my feelings of they being the best band of this generation by performing on FOX NEWS on FOX and FRIENDS, playing the lead track off their new album called "Mr. High And Mighty".</p><p><em>Mr. High and Mighty standing with your back against the wall <br />They better jump when you say jump, they better crawl when you say crawl <br /><br />Buildings crumble and peasants cower at the sound of your name <br />But was it God that gave you that power or is it merely fame <br /><br />Mr. High and Mighty who are your sights set on now with your fair-weather fortune and your gold sacred cow <br /><br />You reunite with your long lost brothers on an old abandoned ship <br />There was a time when you brought joy to others <br />Guess you got caught up in the trip</em> <br /></p><p>Guess who they are singing about?</p><p>Awesome. Those dolts at FOX had no idea.</p>
<p>First of all, U2 didn't peak at Joshua Tree, they peaked at Achtung Baby.</p><p>Second, even as a Canadian, I cannot support Nickleback. Their songs are in heavy rotation on commercial radio constantly in Canada and they are catchy untill you've heard them five million times and begin to realize that you can sing the lyrics of pretty much every Nickleback song to the music from pretty much every other Nickleback song.</p><p>Plus their singer Chad Kroeger is a pompous douchebag who reminds me of every other arrogant pickup driving redneck jackoff in the town where I grew up. And his hair is only a kegger and an electric shaver away from being a mullet. Fuck Nickleback.</p><p>It's hard for me to pick the bands that define a generation because I have no idea how history will treat them or how the music will stand up. I am in that earlier mentioned Sublime/Radiohead generation so my biases lean in that direction. I guess what I will do is list a few bands who define me who have not already been mentioned.</p><p><strong>The Pixies</strong> - I strongly feel that if you don't like the Pixies, then you are not a good person. If the only Pixies song you can name is "that one from the end of Fight Club" then there is a good chance I want to kick you in the nuts.</p><p><strong>Public Enemy</strong> - Make all the jokes you want about a white boy from a white hick town liking Public Enemy, but they taught me that the world was a much bigger and uglier place than I had ever previously considered.</p><p><strong>Dead Kennedys</strong> - I laugh at people who listen to Good Charlotte/Blink 182/Sum 41/Simple Plan/The Crybaby Wannabees and call themselves punk. They have no clue.</p><p><strong>Tragically Hip</strong> - I will never stop promoting true Canadian goodness. Even though they have kind of jumped the shark now, their second and third albums ("Fully, Completely" and "Day For Night") are masterworks in my opinion. Nickleback can't even shine the Hips' shoes.</p>

But really, what does "this generation" even mean? Are we talking musically or population-wise? If you go by music, that's not much...I'd argue that modern popular music largely as we know it has only been around 50-55 years, and a generation is typically 20-25 years, so that means the entire history of modern popular music can be broken down into 2-3 "generations." Hell, that would mean the current "generation" of music has only been going for less than a decade, and maybe just 2-5 years.
If you go by the population, it's still pretty broad. The Baby Boomers are typically classified as being born between 1945-1965, which would cover the first 10-15 years of modern popular music. Generation X then typically falls under 1965-1985...whatever came after that likely just "ended" a couple years ago, so the current generation, like we saw with the "musical generations," has only been going 2-5 years. Is that what we're talking about with "this generation?" Certainly narrows the field a bit...but that said, I think it's pretty much impossible to pick a single band from an entire generation, musical or population-wise.
And Nickleback isn't the answer no matter what.

I guess its a little wordy but it sounds good. Trying to tell someone about 'And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead' feels silly too so i just shorten in to 'Trail of Dead'. Again, a great name but it does feel weird when i reference them to other people.
I definitely think that Dave Grohl is one of the artists of my generation. He has the legend of being the drummer for Nirvana but he has also been the lead singer of an incredible band for over a decade now.
Not many people ever have had success in two bands and even his work with side projects (QOTSA, Tenacious D) is amazing.

and if dave grohl wasnt cool enough, read this story from last year.
Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl Helps Trapped Miners
By Troy Daniel
If there was anybody left out there who was not convinced that Dave Grohl was a gentleman of the highest order...
Two Australian miners who had been trapped more than 925 meters underground since April 25 received a letter of support from an unlikely source, Foo Fighter and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl.
To help the two men cope with their ordeal as rescue efforts went on around them, ipods were sent to them via a 16 metre long pipe alongside other, arguably, more essential items like food and water. Grohl, apparently hearing that the tunes of choice of the now released Todd Russell and Brant Webb were the Foo Fighters, had this to say in an email sent to Mine Manager Mathew Gill:
"Brant and Todd, Dave here, from the Foo Fighters. Hope you guys are hangin' in there, and hope that the music is helping you two out.
"Though I'm halfway around the world right now, my heart is with you both, and I want you to know that when you come home, there's two tickets to any Foos show, anywhere, and two cold beers waiting for yous. Deal? Looking forward to sharing them with you . . .
"Come home safe, and we'll see you soon. Dave Grohl."
The trapped men were reportedly "stoked" with Grohl's offer and have, unsurprisingly, agreed to take him up on the offer to share those beers.
Once again, confirmation that Grohl is, undeniably, a top bloke.
