Did I get a skewed view of Jersey?

The only dude I really know that lived his life in New York, said he lived in 'real' New York. He then explained that anyone from Jersey was "Bridge and Tunnel" , hoofing it over a bridge or through a tunnel to act like they were from New York.

As far as we know here in Ca., Jersey is pretty much Fresno with less mexicans.

What't the real story behind New Jersey for those of us who are on the west coast and don't know any better, or only watch Sopranos?

No, you got it right. People from NJ have a skewed view of NJ.

Besides for the area around NYC, NJ is pretty empty. Go down south and you'll find a whole lot of nothing. Go to the west and all you'll see are farms. Out where I live I get stuck behind lawn tractors on my way home from work.
Hey! I grew up outside of Buffalo, and although it obviously has a lot of problems, it's a great place in a lot of other ways...good public schools, an abundance of cheap but quality food, dirt cheap cost of living. There are also gorgeous areas of the city if you know where to go. The taxes are outrageous though, but that's NY.
But yeah, it is weird because everyone thinks that you live close to NYC just because you live in NY, whereas I've not really spent much time in the tri-state area, mostly because it's an 8 hour drive away. Where I grew up is actually closer to where I live now in the DC area than it is to NYC. Only 2 hours from Toronto, 3 from Cleveland, 4 from Pittsburgh.

Beaches (Long beach Island, Seaside, etc) are very nice

Look, I'll represent for Jersey every single time, but c'mon, to list Seaside as anything other than a toilet is just an out and out lie.

The biggest blow to NJ culture was that God-awful "MTV Real Life: I Have a Jersey Shore House." It was so bad, I think the entire state could have sued MTV for defamation and won. That fuckin' knuckle dragger and his guido/ette friends were downright embarrassing. That's what everyone outside of Jersey thinks Jersey is. But then again, I guess that's what we all think Brooklyn and Shaolin are like as well, so I don't know. This post has gone absolutely nowhere, and frankly I've grown bored of it and I'm sorry for wasting your time.

It was horrific, mortifying. It took me a week to watch because I couldn't stand more than a few minutes at atiem before I had go take a break, get some air, take a walk around the block.

At least I didnt go so far as to say Wildwood for beach areas. LBI is (or was) really nice though.

Growing up in Jersey, you learn to get used to the New Yorkers on their soapbox accusing New Jersey people of "wanting to be New Yorkers". Its almost as old as the ol "armpit of the US" joke. I'll happily take my taylor ham egg and cheese's on an everything bagel and my occational trips to the city to see the Yanks any day. Im proud to be from here and people that live here know what I mean. Also, our boss doesn't cry at the drop of a hat.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a225/JerseyQ/john.jpg
