From Hell isn't so much a bad movie as it is a dissapointment. First off it's incredibly gory - proably the goriest movie all year, if not for the past couple of years- so if that's your cup of tea, you'll enjoy the gore. However I felt unfulfilled. They had EXCELLENT material of which to work with- famous case, incredibly awesome settings, yet it was directed so amateurishly. No suspense was built, they could hav eused things like lighting (I'm not the type who looks at every aspect of film but for some reason lack of use of effective lighting stuck out) to muchj better effect. The entire Freemason thing could have been done better and the Heather Graham romance totally didn't work. And the script should have been reworked.
That being said there were some good things. It's good seeing gore again in a mainstream flick. Johnny Depp as always was cool, even though he was kind of Icabod II, but he can carry a movie better than Mark Whalberg can (I still say a Depp helmed Planet of the Apes would have been cooler). Robbie Coltrane was pretty good. The detective parts and politics involved were actually enjoyable.
So I somewhat recommend it with 2.5 out of 4 stars.
