View Full Version : Kentucky Derby 2006
So apparently, the odds-on favorite for the Kentucky Derby is a horse named Lawyer Ron, who just won the Arkansas Derby. Have R&F addressed this on the air?

No, but they usually talk about the winner after the race. I don't know if they've ever discussed it pre-race, though.

I want Roberto to do the play by play of the races.
You're right, and I don't think they'd be likely to talk about it that much except for the whole Ron connection. If there was a horse with Fez as part of the name they'd definitely talk about it.

There are several horses that will take betting interests....barbaro is a horse that just won a gutsy race at Gulfstream Park and is undefeated going into the derby off of an 8-week layoff. Lawyer Ron is a great horse that beat a 14-horse field over the weekend in convincing fashion....this horse also has a 'feel-good' story behind it ala Afleet Alex from last year, LR was named after the owner (heinz's) lawyer who had been his personal lawyer for 30+ years, sometime recent the owner died in a drowning accident so they kind of doing a 'win one for the gipper' type of hype here....Discreet Cat is a horse that has been based out of India trained by Saaed bin Suroor who would love to win 'over here' because traditionally those horses come here and get stomped, if you pay any attention to Belmont day at Belmont Park he usually ships 3 or 4 there and is lucky to take home a check, supposedly this horse is for real, I bet him with Vegas and got 50-1 odds about a month ago so I put 20 on him to win 1000....Finally, the favorite will be Brother Derek...nothing bad to say here should be the favorite and do well barring any road trouble and post position problems.

These are my thoughts as of now...derby is 4 weeks or so away...will post again

It's Lawyer Ron, Brother Derrick and Sinister Minister's race to lose. I'll pick between these three based on feel, gate #, and most recent races for close to the start time. It's hard to go against Sinister Minister for me as this baby seems to win any way it needs too. Yet Lawyer Ron and BD are very strong horses as well and one of them WILL be the favorite barring any last second surprises or injuries. Stick, who would be the riders on these three horses and give me some feedback on them as you seem to be up on this shit. It's a huge factor that is sometimes overlooked and I don't want to fall into that trap.

It's a huge factor that is sometimes overlooked and I don't want to fall into that trap.
It's always someone's race to lose. Last year it was Steinbrenner's Bellamy Road who 'should have' cruised. Didn't happen. One factor that usually determines the outcomes of races at any level is the early speed. If one horse can set the pace, that horse usually will run a good race. If several horses are used to being up front and try to run that way there is a speed duel and can really wear these horses out. Therefore, I have to caution you on your liking of Sinister Minister. Despite his awesome display he was the lone speed horse in that field on a track (Keeneland) that is a speed biased track. I am not convinced. Oh, and his only other win was a maiden claiming race which means 2 things...1) he was racing against horses that had never won a race like himself...2) it was a claiming race which meant the owner was willing to part ways with him to anyone that would pay the $62,500. I've heard of peaking at the right time but this would be unprecidented.

Lawyer Ron - John McKee

Bro Derek- Alex Solis

Sinister Minister - Garrett Gomez

Although inconsistent, I like A.P. Warrior. I also like Bob and John as well as Brother Derek and Lawyer Ron. I'll be placing money on whomever Garrett Gomez is riding, Sinister Minister or otherwise.

Discreet Cat out, First Samurai out

I guess I will give a list of all the early wagers I made:

Brother Derek (9-1) 30 to win 270

Cause to Believe (30-1) 10 to win 300

Deputy Glitters (50-1) 6 to win 300

Discreet Cat (50-1) 20 to win 1000 (-20)

Sacred Light (30-1) 6 to win 180

Sunriver (50-1) 6 to win 300

Barbaro (12-1) 50 to win 600

Sharp Humor (80-1) 6 to win 480

Sinister Minister (100-1) 20 to win 2000

Lawyer Ron (10-1) 50 to win 500

Steppenwolfer (45-1) 10 to win 450

Overall I am risking 184 with my shortest return being Sacred Light to win 180...I would actually lose if that horse wins but there are some chances here to make some good money. Lawyer Ron looks like my best chance to do well.

I'm heading down to Delaware Park later today to watch the race. I'm probably going to wheel a trifecta with Bob and John, A.P. Warrior and Brother Derek, wheel another trifecta with Bob and John, Brother Derek and Lawyer Ron and play Barbaro and Sweetnorthernsaint to place. I'll probably check the boards and see where the money isn't going and play a few long shots, maybe Deputy Glitters to win. Good luck everyone!

Good day for the Old Line State...
Our Horse industry really needs it(declining track attendance and a Herpes outbreak)...I only wish the Laurel horse (Sweetnorthernsaint) had won cause that's closer to where I live (and I drive by there every day)

By the way, I doubt any one else saw this, but real early on in ESPN's coverage, I would say around 1230, 1pm, the interview of an obviously hammered Jerry O'Connell by one of the ESPN reporters was probably five of the funniest minutes of TV i've seen in a long time...

Preakness pick:

I am looking for some value here and I see it coming in the form of Brother Derek. Many would look at his Derby performance and think that he just wasn't good enough to beat Barbaro. Well, maybe they didn't watch the race and didn't pick up on a couple of things. Brother Derek spent the whole trip 4 or 5 wide, 9 wide on the last turn, and didn't fall apart down the stretch like many of the others did. Brother Derek tossed one of his shoes, and in a deep track that is devastating. Watch for this horse to rebound and benefit from the shortened distance.

Play for Preakness: Brother Derek at 4-1 or better. 2nd in exactas behind Barbaro only (expect a short price)

Your friend and advisor,

Sticky

Wow... I feel pretty smart.. I was actually thinking the same thing. Brother Derek started in the what, 20th post? Thats nearly impossible to make up from, running that wide in a race that big (and not that long). The shoe I didn't know about, but that just sounds like bad luck- I really like this horse in this race.

On the other hand Barbaro was so damn convincing in the Derby, he is tough to count out... I think I will be betting some combinations involving these 2.

I really don't think that this is a good betting race, but if Brother Derek is 4-1 or better, I'm in. He seems to be a perfect horse for this race, and any exacta box without Barbaro would be nice.(I won't hold my breath).
