President Lincoln shot...141 years ago today

I forgot to post this earlier today, but it is indeed the 141st anniversary of President Lincoln's death at the hands of John Wilkes Booth...

I think the real ironic thing is that Booth considered himself to be this sort of uber-Southern Nationalist, but Lincoln's death was probably one of the worst things that ever happened to the South as a whole...

When Lincoln died, so did any hope for a peaceful/amicable reconstruction, as the Radical Republicans shortly muscled aside President Johnson, and really established the type of hardcore federal legislative power we have today, which they probably wouldn't have been able to do if Lincoln had lived

I waver on Lincoln sometimes, especially on the issue of his abuse of his constitutional powers and his subjugation and occupation of the State of Maryland, but he didn't deserve an ending like that...he should have been allowed to live out the rest his days in peace...

Didn't say I hated the guy...didn't say I'm glad Booth shot him...

Don't get me wrong, my ancestors fought with General Jackson, and I love the Army of Northern Virginia, but I'm not one of these morons who goes around declaring "the south will rise again" and that sort of junk...I even thought South Carolina should have taken down the battle flag from the top of the statehouse....

Unlike some of my Southern bretheren, I'm actually intelligent enough to realize the war ended almost 150 years ago, and I don't feel the need, like some dopes, to still go around egging on people about it...It doesn't make any sense...let the dead sleep for cryin' out loud

I simply celebrate my heritage, and plan to make working at a battlefield for the Park Service my career

And if you look at what Lincoln did in the state of Maryland? I'm being objective when I say it was pretty bad...(he arrested judges, journalists, legislators and even regular schmoes and held them all without trial)
