I need a new King Size Mattress, but I do not want to get ripped off. Anyone have any tips on buying one? Know any good stores or brands? Anything to stay away from? Any help would be appreciated.

I have read up on this online, and I know comparison shopping is impossible, so now I am looking for word of mouth recomnedations.

I went to Sleepy's and got a $3K bed (can't remember the brand right now). While it was a lot more expensive than we first intended, the selling points for it were that it had pillow top and a 20 year guarantee. If the bed fails after 19 years, and 11 months, we can return it for a totally new bed.

And we love the thing. It definitely was worth the money.

Whatever you do, make sure you test the thing out first. I ordered once from dial a mattres, and ended up throwing the thing out a month later because I couldn't sleep on the fucking thing.

A believe me I was fucking tired when I threw it out.

I got a Select Comfort bed. I love it, and if I have to move, it'll be soooo easy! Dont buy a bed from those places that "take your old bed". Thats how bed bugs get spread.

Madison, NJ?

There is a 1-800-mattress store on 22 that seems to have good prices. Friend has used them twice.

I prefer department stores, though, and never go to a place like Sleepy's or Rockaway Bedding. Total rip offs. If you do have to go to them NEVER pay what they are asking. haggle for a while and then walk out on them after you leave your phone number. They'll call back in a day or so offering an even better price. Still a rip off, though, stay away from those places.

I bought my bed at Bon Ton, a department store near where I live. It's a huge king size mattress, Sealy or Simmons (forget which one but I know its one of those two namebrands), plush top (not pillow), great quality, and cost me $800, normally its $2000 something. Got the bed, a nice frame with headboard, and box springs for the $800. The store by me always has huge mattress sales and I assume Macy's or JC Penny's does the same in their larger stores. I'd say wait for a mattress sale at a department store if you can.

As for pillow tops.. they are nice but the pillow tops get pretty bad after a bunch of years. You'd be wise to save your money and get a good firm mattress and add on a pillow top of your own that you can replace. Same goes for those foam mattresses, save the cash and get a nice topper from Costco. Check your newspapers for sales.

Up until about a year ago we were using my parents' mattress that they
bought sometime in the 60's. (nice!) It occurred to me that
I may well have been conceived on that very mattress though it could
have been in a field or at the drive-in or someplace else.
Anyway, we went to Rockaway bedding (YEAH!) and got what seems to be a
good mattress so far. We haggled too and got a better
price. Good move getting a king size though. I'd have a
hard time sleeping on a queen size.

Not sure where you're from but when my g/f and I moved in together last fall we went to a Bloomingdales outlet store ( sells furniture, rugs, beds, etc ... ) in Elmsford NY and got a 4K King Size matress, that was a showroom model, for $600 bucks, the 2 box springs for $50 each, the frame for $40 and delivery was like 90$. You could get ones even cheaper than that if you didnt mind some bumps and scratches.
