View Full Version : The Transmigration of the Ron and Fez Show

I feel that the Ron and Fez show has changed drastically in the past 2 months and as a long time fan I'm trying to figure out what I think about it.

The shows since the boys returned from vacay have been very strong with great guests and small comic moments sprinkled here and there (FM Jeff takes a finger in the hole). Ron is a great interviewer - his interview with Bennett Miller was awesome. Moe's music was cool too.

But it's definitely a different show from the glory days of 2002 when there was a lot of great drama with the staff, especially Billy and Al. I miss these shows and as the show evolves it seems we're not going to get this style of show back anytime soon.

I think they just do not have as dynamic of a staff. Also, and i notice this a lot with O&A, none of them are as into the buisness as they once were. at WNEW, they seemed to all hang out more, after the show or getting there early. I think now due mainly to the new times, they are more in and out. Also their audience is national now, so that is a big difference.

Earl is not a good on air producer, and their interns are not as good as the WNEW interns, and they have no one like Billy or even Mikey D to tool on (now they do have Dave though).

I feel that the show was pushed into a different direction after the Superbowl bet debacle. Ron is proving he can hang on NPR.

You are right. This was something that happened in their move to DC and I wasn't ready to accept it then. Plus it was so hard to hear the show. But I think I've accepted it now.

It just seems what Ron and Fez do. Their show evolves. I'm sure half the people love it and half the people want the same style of show. They just have to do the show they feel is best.

I think you do have to admit one thing though. Their show is WAY better than the DC days. The boys are pros, but I think their work conditions brought them down a little. They are way more "on" with the XM show because it seems they're more comfortable.

Also, we can't live in the past. We will always look back at the time we got into Ron and Fez as the "Golden Era" of their show. We can never have it back again, and that's the way it is.

Lastly, I liked the "Beat up on Bill and Al" shows, but I also know people who got bored with them constantly bashing one or two guys. People were worried Harry was going to be the next guy but luckily for those people, he wasn't.

It just seems Ron and Fez can't please everyone, so they do what they want. Gotta respect that.

The show has definitely evolved into something a bit more esoteric and cerebral, and I'm not sure if it's because they're nationwide, the time they're on, or that Ron and Fez themselves have decided to move on to a new chapter in their careers.

It seems XM gives them a tremendous amount of freedom as to what kind of show they do, and maybe they're doing what they've always wanted to do without having to worry about ratings and so-called "target audiences."

Ron and Fez are both so phenomenally talented that no matter what kind of show they do, they have me riveted. I enjoy XM Ron and Fez every bit as much as I did WNEW Ron and Fez.

Damn you, Moe, for beating me to the punch yet again.

Ok Gvac but I don't think a cerebral show plays to Fez's strengths (really just humor meant to appeal to homesexul listerners and wrestling trivia). I like a cerebral show myself but sometimes I want to hear Kenny Allen in a bad guest bit.

odd word

i've always liked ron & fez ... i liked them when they were in NYC, DC and back in NYC ... i liked them at nights, mornings and midday ... i liked the 1, 3 & 4 hour shows ... i liked them on commercial radio and now on satellite ... i don't mind the cursing, the politics or even the football & wrestling (two things i have no earthly interest in)

i think rory, j-dubs and giant brian (maybe drunk hawk) were the only producers who could hang and keep up with the show, and could hold their own on as a 3rd mic ... the one constant seems to have a staff that never really seemed to be able to maintain (their cool, homor or perspective) in the number 1 market

the only thing i noticed, with the guest of late (which all have seemed like perfect matches for the show's flow) fezzie is really quite -- except for the plugs

to me the show is still as funny and entertianing as it's always been ...

Shit it was a joke. That is a stereotype he built for himself and then overcame. I love Fez. I want to hear more Fez on the show.

I still love to listen, but the show is very different than it was back in the WNEW days. To me, the main difference is the energy level. Listen to the older shows, even as recent as the end of the JFK era. Both Ron and Fez were louder, laughed more, and the pace was generally quicker.

No matter - things change and evolve. R&F are still the most entertaining 3 hours on any kind of radio anywere.

i've been listening since the dotcom days, and i think the show's never been better.

a
lot of the longer story lines in the past came out of staff
incompetance. i can tell that ron is thrilled to actually have
great guests for once; so he doesn't have to kill time and manufacture
bits mocking out staff or being a therapist to drunks and closet
cases. as great as all that is, i think ron was really hoping for
a higher calling.

the guests have been great, and ron's a great interviewer.
fezzy will get more involved over time. remember that he just had some
major surgery and he'll be re-couping for a long time.

more importantly, having great guests is going to introduce the
boys to a larger audience, which is a good thing. i want more
people to appreciate these guys...and more people will check out the
show based on the quality of guests. now, they're not getting tom
cruise or some other a-list corporate celebs as guests, but they are
geting some real artists and interesting people with something to
say.

i hope some of the hardcores recognize and appreciate the maturing process the show is going through.

/back to my occational lurker-ing :)

I'm sticking with the opinion that XM Era Ron and Fez is the funniest they've ever been-by far.

The
WNEW shows were great, but there was a huge reliance on Dukes/Billy,
which worked great becuase they were great radio. Some people
look down upon the JFK shows becuase the format was the same as NEW,
but the producers weren't as good for radio.

I love Earl so much
because I feel like he adds great material to the show. Al didn't
add material, he just involved himself in everything which cut back on
Ron and Fez Time. Now we have 45% more Ron and Fez per show!

I'm sure there are several reasons for the show being different. One of those reasons probably has to do with Fez's health. With no more drinking on the show, things are bound to be different. Not that Fez was the only one who ever drank, but with neither of the hosts drinking, there really isn't much to gain from having a drunk intern or drunk ESD show.

In any case, I'm enjoying this show a great deal. If I didn't have R&F to listen to while driving, I'd actually have to get a different job.

I perfer Ron and Fez to be a contrast to what O&A are doing,
and I've always had. They were teh "Calming" show after the
"Hyper" show that O&A do. Also I love it that Ron and Fez are
trying to make the listner think, rather than just gonig on the air
saying a bunch of shit and have the listner just accept it as fact
The phone problem might have something to do with some older bits not being done.
i haven't read this whole thread cause i'm full of ADD or whatever but i believe in combination with the time slot they have now (versus the old wnew slot) they are just getting back into the flow of things slowly but surely

Whenever they start building momentum with a comedy pyramid they are constantly undermined by the phones blowing up. That has to be very frustrating for them.

I've been listening for 6 years and I think the funniest bit I ever heard was the recent GAY-MAN superhero bit. They did a great Fat Albert bit, too. Catty Moments with Fez, Gumshoe Gang, Ronaldo, etc.

The show has evolved but it's still filled with great humor.

Fezzie's humor goes beyond just the obvious gay bit. Fezzie is at his funniest when he's improv-ing, whether it's just great banter with Ron, such as the hilarious dog's ass bit I just recently listened too, or the Too Sexy for the Cage. If you can listen to the dog's ass/toothbruch bit that's on the favorite bit page. Ron and Fez are absolutely hilarious and they are making it up as they go.

Now Fez is not as strong on the music/movie interview aspects, and we had a lot of that this week, but you can guarantee that they are not going to be that heavy on that aspect every week.
