Me and my brother are looking for a new apartment to rent. The problem is that I have terrible credit, and I don't make much money. I make enough to pay all my bills, but that's it. No landlord in their right mind would sign a lease with me.

Does anyone know a way that I can fix this?

I don't think you need good credit to rent, only buy. None of my landlords have ever asked for a credit check, just the rent check each month.

even if the lease is in his name, won't they still have to check me out? and won't it still be detrimental?

I seem to have this mental block about paying my cable and power bills on time. Its only cable, only power, but its every fucking month.

I suck

you kidding me??? that shit has nothing to do with your credit unless it goes to collections. You'll have no problem, and if you aren't renting in NYC they probably won't care anyway. Remember, they want to rent you the apt. If they ask for a credit check just put it in your bto's name.

If it's only utilities, you probably don't have to sweat it. Just worry about charge accts, car payments and the like. I don't even know if utilties report to credit companys. They just turn your shit off and call a lawyer.

If you can swing it, offer to pay an EXTRA month of security. A landlord might forego the credit check.
